“Great authentic experience”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

This hostel is fantastic, in the haidan district, near the jishuitan metro. The actual hostel is in a hutong, but tucked away at the back. It might be tricky so bring a map. There was also another hostel nearby "Michael's House" so we just followed the sign for that.
The area is great, its filled with locals and not so many tourists, which is a good thing if you're looking for that.

The chinese courtyard design was one of my favourite aspects. It looks like a real authentic courtyard with all the amenities that you'll need including internet, rec room, tv, books, etc. Some staff members don't speak english that fluently so be prepared for that. The internet connection is a bit weak in areas but there are several computers in the common area for those without laptops/smartphones.

The hostel also lacked a kitchen, it was being renovated when we went (april 2011) but there was plenty of restaurants in the area. Plentiful street food and fruit vendors as well, so cheap and awesome.

The only complaint was the common showers and washrooms. I think there was only 2 common girl showers for whole space so you might have to wait to shower. The internet was also weak...

This place was recommended by a friend, and I'll happily pass that recommendation along. The staff were friendly, helped with problems in our room, and recommended a great place for Peking duck. The overall atmosphere inside is very nice, and outside of the hostel is (what seemed to me to be) an authentic Beijing neighbourhood. My only advice is to make sure you have the phone number handy so you can call them to give directions to the driver-it's pretty hard to find (down an alleyway near Jishuitan metro station).

I travelled around a few cities in China over a couple of weeks and this was the best hostel I stayed at. It was clean, neat (complete with ikea furnishings) and the staff were friendly and useful.

I went on a tour to the Great Wall (Jinshanling) and it was well worth the early start. Perhaps down to the time of year but the sky was really clear and the wall was completely empty besides myself and my one other tour companion.

In terms of nightlife, its fairly near the student area for cheap drinks (Wudaokou) , but also houhai lake is worth going to (walkable in the day time, but probably worth a taxi at night).

The hostel itself is fairly near a metro stop (10-15 mins) and from there you can get to all the main sights within30-40 mins so its pretty well placed.

Overall i thought it was a very decent

Finally a really good hotel. To me, everything was perfect. It is one of those hidden places in a very Chinese neighborhood. It has a nice common area to hang out, it a couple of minutes walk to Tianemen square, the Mausoleum and the forbidden city. I loved strolling around in the Hutong, smelling all those foreign scents, eating at one of those little Chinese places or even going to karaoke.
I don't think you can find a better hotel in Beijing, especially not on this rate.
