“Bad experience”
Reviewed November 19, 2011

I don’t understand why this place is famous. Totally overrated! And I totally agree with those that say that it was the worst experience in Beijing.
Average quality of service, and what is most important, a really poor, and bad taste, show! Also very dirty toilets.
I can’t believe that there are no better examples of Chinese opera in Beijing.

“A Great Chinese Experience!”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

In a spur-of-a-moment decision, my friends and I decided to go to Lao She Teahouse around 5pm earlier today. We looked at the pamphlet showing there are 2 restaurants. One on the 2nd floor of the teahouse and another on the first. Because we're all poor college students, we decided to go to the restaurant on the 1st floor.

It was empty because we entered at a down time. But we each ordered a cup of tea (ranges from 38-100 RMB per cup, but each cup has tea leaves & you can add hot water as often as you want). We then ordered some small snacks and then decided we'd stay there for dinner because the dishes weren't outrageously expensive and we wanted to stay for the free performances at 6:30pm.

We ended up ordering TONS of food (including Peking duck & duck soup) and the performances were amazing (traditional puppet show & musicians playing Chinese folk music)! The bill ended up being ~100 RMB between the 4 of us and though we've all been in Beijing for months, it was one of the most genuine cultural experiences we've had here so far.

“Great overall impression of Chinese culture”
Reviewed April 18, 2011

Quite expensive (180-380 RMB) night show of 1h30min. But a very good introduction to the Chinese culture of different art forms (acrobatics, Beijing opera, Sichaun opera, tea ceremony demonstration (on the stage) etc.) and a very good Chinese tea during all the show and snacks. Worth the money if not seated at the very end. Good tickets for 220 RMB.

“Entertainment for the cattle class”
Reviewed February 19, 2011

A good introduction to the Chinese arts as it includes a little of everything (a bit of singing, a bit of kung fu, a bit of acrobats etc). However, the teahouse is unbelievably crowded and hot. It is difficult to concentrate as the waiters are constantly passing through to deliver drinks and sell candied-apples (!!). The imperial Beijing snacks are also underwhelming.

“Terrible terrible place, what a waste of money!!!!!”
Reviewed January 3, 2011

During our visit to Beijing in December 2010 which we very much enjoyed we made the only mistake of the visit by visiting this Teahouse to see some `traditional Beijing Opera` on the recommendation of the tourist office.

After being given a pot of mediocre tea (which was just topped up with hot water over the next hour or so) and some very strange snacks we were subjected to a truley awful hour of caberet acts. This included some OK vase juggling, some terrible mimes/sound effect acts and a bizzare experience of Beijing opera - Which consisted of a man dressed as a woman (with a white painted face) litterally screetching at the top of his voice about his mother and a sea cucumber (English translation provided on a screen) for well over 20mins.

The whole experience might have been funny - had been someone else who had paid £80 for two tickets.
