I spent 15 days there and a quick summary would be : Friendly staff, traditional settings and reasonable price.

Room is basic but has everything a girl needs. Could use a bit of better lighting but not much to complain about. Most of the rooms have no windows so it can get a bit depressing but the courtyard has plush sofas to lounge and cafe upstairs is open terrace (partial). Free wifi access throughout the entire asset with good upload and download speed. *kudos*

Plenty of restaurant nearby but most don't speak English so you might have to be a bit adventurous with your meals. Cheap laundry as well but don't expect 5 stars service. :)

Room Tip: Take the backyard rooms - it is much more quieter.

We were in Beijing for three days, two nights and had a busy itinerary so we didn't need a particularly luxurious stay. We had a double room with a King Size bed. I would describe this place as more of a hostel than a hotel.

You can book tours there which is good and they are reasonably priced. Our room had no windows but we were getting up so early that we wouldn't have needed them anyway. The room was fairly clean and charmingly decorated.

The location is fairly easy to get to once you know how. The 'Alley' part of the hotel's name is definitive in that the hotel is down a street that doesn't really look like it would have a hotel and you do get a few stares from the locals. It's a ten minute walk from the nearest subway so pretty good transport links and easy to get to the airport. There is a supermarket nearby if you want to get some snacks or just go for the experience!

Greeted by enthusiastic staff upon arrival, which was welcoming! Couldn't find hotel so had to ask the locals for direction. Hotel seemed to have been re-modelled and restructured: the courtyard was homey and relaxing, with Chinese-red furnishings and upholstery at all corners, and the profused green plants and small water fountain right in the centre complete the perfect picture! Breakfast was served on the upper roof terrace, which you can "see through" from the courtyard below. The 22 rooms are either with or without windows, and ours was without, which was suffocating! Also, the musty smell from the bathroom permeates into the room after every shower, which made our stay very unpleasant indeed. Even though our room opens into the courtyard, there's no fresh air circulating whatsoever. Directions: take Subway Line 2 (2rmb only), get down at Chaoyangmen Station, take Exit H, turn left follow the block (alongside Wu Mart Building), at corner, turn left again and walk straight till you come to the traffic lights/corner on your right-side. Cross over, go straight into the lane and hotel's just on the left, amidst the small shops and lesser decorated hutongs alongside.

Room Tip: Only King rooms are with windows, other rooms either open into the courtyard or face the corridors...

Super friendly staff, Clean rooms, locals feel. It's also a great neighborhood even though it's a bit rundown.Definitely tough to find though! Three taxi cab drivers gave up on the way here from the airport.

Directions: Take Subway Line 5 to the Chaoyangmen stop. Walk west on Chaoyangmen (about 200m) until you get to Chaoyangmen alley (not really an alley), which is indicated by the elevated crosswalks (footbridges) at the intersection. Take a left (south). Your next right is a dark alley in between a few locals-oriented restaurants. The hotel is about 25 meters on your left, right after a little restaurant.

Wifi is solid if you're in a room by the router.

Room Tip: They'll help you if you want a different one.

Well I agree with all the good reviews from other guests. Plus, the hotel is closed to metroline station yet actually in residence area. So we didn't see so many tourists as hou hai (lake) area and south luo gu lane. All rooms are very quiet. And the hotel has a nice small yard and the terrace. But during our stay, the weather was hot so did not see people enjoying them. So could not be a good chance to meet new people.

Becoz this is residence area, good to try some cheap and authentic Chinese food without rip-off as touristic area. The spicy Sichuan restaurant next to the hotel and the one next to 161 hotel (west side of Lishi Alley) are very good. Qing tang fu at south chaoyang street provides good noodles from west China (shaanxi province). Anyway, local favorite night market - Gui Jie and bar street - San li tun are both in 15 minutes taxi driving distance.

Room Tip: Some rooms on ground floor have no open windows, so better to pick rooms on the second floor. The ve...

This friendly hutong hotel/guest-house is conveniently located between two useful metro stations (about 15 min walk in either direction).
The rooms were clean enough and quite nicely decorated. I wouldn’t recommended it for fussy travellers who like everything pristine and immaculate e.g. it was difficult to close the window and the shower didn’t work one day – but the bed was very comfortable and sheets and towels were changed daily.
The real draw, apart from the excellent location, is the fantastic and bubbly staff who went out of their way for us on a number of occasions (including darting off down the road to a nearby supply store to get us a travel adaptor). Really genuine, pleasant and likeable bunch of young ladies with a few English speakers amongst them (basic English but certainly good enough to get by). Their tours were also good value. We booked our Great Wall of China tour with them and it was perfect, no scams, no shopping, just a mini bus directly to the Wall and back. Exactly what we wanted.

We wanted a hutong hotel with character. This was a great choice. It is a short walk from the Subway and was easy to find. They have a great restaurant in the hotel. The staff spoke English well. The organized a tour of the great wall and we were very happy with the tour. We were very happy with the room, it was nice and clean. They also had free WIFI. I would highly recommend the hotel.
