Our connecting flight (Hong Kong to Toronto) was cancelled in Beijing and there was nobody from Air Canada at the airport to help us at all. After three hours (I was very pregnant and exhausted), we ended up following an airport employee who promised to take us to a "5-star" hotel. Free airport shuttle. At the hotel, nobody spoke or understood English. This was extremely frustrating. Every floor and room smelled like cigarette smoke although I asked for a non-smoking room. There were waist high ash trays next to every elevator. "5-star" in China is very, very misleading. It's more like 1-star in North America. The shower was a shower head over the toilet, no shower or bath stall or curtain. You had to literally shower over the toilet and the entire bathroom would get submerged by water. The "slippers" were plastic flip flops from previous guests, very gross! The toilet paper rolls, when new, have half an inch of toilet paper on them (as a pregnant lady, I was using the bathroom frequently, and then every half hour I had to chase down someone to get more toilet paper!). The room was dark when lit. All of the phone instructions were in Chinese, so we couldn't figure out how to dial out. The decor was drab and had old brown carpet. We went downstairs to the "restaurant", waited a long time, and got a warm beer and an inedible sandwich. I was starving and pregnant and couldn't eat it, it tasted that bad. In the morning, still hungry, we went to the second-floor restaurant. They had expensive Chinese food that was mediocre. The fruit juice was warm. Nobody spoke English and they nodded a lot. It was the worst hotel I had ever been in. Ironically, I saw chinese air flight crews and employees in their uniforms checking in at the hotel lobby. The next time I get unexpectedly stuck at an airport overnight, I will go to the nearest Hilton chain hotel. The Aulympic hotel in Beijing was the worst travel experience I ever had, compounded by the airplane cancellation at nighttime in an airport and hotel where nobody spoke English, and the rooms and food were terrible.
