The personnel was very friendly, but not everyone spoke english - and those that did didn't do too well. For a three-star hotel the room was rather lower level and too loud - one of the reasons that I got little sleep. Also the rooms are rented by the hour - which didn't really help with the volume level. All in all I didn't feel very comfortable

very good place for budget travelers. unfortunately the reception girls don't speak English (except for one for one of the), so anyhting you want besides checking in and out it's hard to explain. there's a 24/7 construction site just opposite the hotel, so expect a lot of noise even durring the night.
other than that everything was fine.

Looking at the other reviews it seems that we were very unfortunate with our room, but the hotelcorridors were so gloomy that I was sure that this was the standard of the rooms as well. The floor and bathroom in our room was clean enough but the walls had different spots of unknown origin and i wasnt convinced that the bed sheets and towels had actually been changed. However the staff was really sweet and location is superb! All in all we found it to be a good enough base for exploring the city.

We found this hotel listed on wotif and it was by far the cheapest available ($28 US, room only). The room was ok, enough space. Shower needs a scrub and you have to ask to have the air con turned on each time as the power goes off when you take the room keycard out of the power socket. The bed was hard as a rock (welcome to china). A little far from the train (15min or so walk) but do-able non the less. Great location in relation to the hutongs and plenty of bars etc. Staff speak some english and they have "Internet" which is one computer in the lobby that is slow and did not want to load many pages. No wifi. Did the job

If you book on line you can get a room here at a fraction of the price advertised in the hotel lobby. At the internet price you get a great value room. Its large and clean everything works fine, (internet, lights, hot water.) Only one of the receptionists speaks much English so if you need anything be prepared to look up the chinese words or plan for some mime. The room cleaning invarably forgets to replace stuff but you only have to ask and it's brought very quickly.
The location is great about 5 minutes walk to the hutong area where you can eat a decent breakfast and 20 minutes to the wonderful Hohai.
The other good thing about this hotel is that its easy to spot when you get a taxi back from a night out.
I go to china a lot and will be making this my first preference.

We recently stayed at Xinghaiqi Holiday Hotel.

The room was small, but clean. It's not anything fancy, but for the budget traveler, it would be a great place to stay.

The location was great. It is 10 minutes down the street from a subway stop and isn't too far from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Sq (maybe 30 minutes?). Just around the corner is Nan Luo Gu Lane, a hutong with lots of restaurants and fun shops. It is also not far from Ghost Street, an area packed with restaurants.

Free internet with network cable (provided.)
