“Clean and great location”
Reviewed March 21, 2011

We recently stayed at Xinghaiqi Holiday Hotel.

The room was small, but clean. It's not anything fancy, but for the budget traveler, it would be a great place to stay.

The location was great. It is 10 minutes down the street from a subway stop and isn't too far from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Sq (maybe 30 minutes?). Just around the corner is Nan Luo Gu Lane, a hutong with lots of restaurants and fun shops. It is also not far from Ghost Street, an area packed with restaurants.

Free internet with network cable (provided.)

Bus just 2 minutes away and subway about 20-15 minutes. Staff at desk had adequate english. Breakfast was Western style...egg, 2 slices of toast, coffee, juice or milk, jam, cucumber slices and ham slices. More than adequate. Room clean, free Internet. Newish hotel in Hutong area. Walk to Subway, turn left and walk towards next 2 stations and Lama temple through all the Hutong area, which is being renewed as a traditional area to visit. Doncheng wants to be new, but still showing traditional beijing. The position of this hotel cannot be faulted. Could not believe how clean the city is...workers everywhere as cleaners...very few cigarette butts. Uniformed cleaners. Uniformed Bus drivers polite and in general everyone was so polite and wanted to be belpful. Only problem left is that many still want to 'spit' on streets of the city, especially men!

You've probably heard some horror stories about Chinese hotels, and no doubt some of them deserve the criticism and slagging they get, but you don't have to worry too much if you've booked into Xinghaiqi H.H, or are considering staying here.
The rooms are basic but generally clean and tidy (en suite 'Western' toilet, Shower) and they get a daily 'quick once over' from a friendly but slightly under-enthusiatic cleaning staff.
The guy in the room next door claimed he was being eaten alive by bugs and fleas, but he seems to have been the only one - nobody else made any such claim - although to be fair, the beds here are possibly some of the hardest you'll ever encounter and not for the faint hearted, or those who like to sink into a supersoft mattress.
The staff are helpful and friendly, and some of them speak reasonably good if basic English. If you make an effort to learn a few Chinese phrases yourself, you will find they respond positively and communication is not a major problem.

The location of this Hotel is hard to beat. All the major sites of Beijing are within walking distance or else a short (cheap) taxi ride. If you want to go further afield they have a dedicated member of staff who can help you arrange trips and days out, order taxis, book tickets etc, etc ...and she speaks very good English.
Overall, this is not the ideal place for those who put a high priority on comfort or Hotel amenities as a yardstick for a good/relaxing holiday, but if you are here to see the sites and experience Beijing for real and not spend a great deal of time sitting around in a Hotel - then this place will not disappoint. What it lacks in comforts is made up for by it's location and value for money.

The room was nothing special, but it was clean, good service, had a good high speed internet connection, and was very inexpensive. I paid $28/night through Booking.com, and that rate included a (Chinese) breakfast. Most days breakfast was quite filling. The breakfast and room staff could not always speak English, but front desk staff could. There was air conditioning in the rooms that was turned on by remote when I requested it. Television only had one english channel (CCTV news) but I wasn't in China to watch TV. The hotel is a 10-15 minute walk from the subway station, or a short bus ride. It was close to some nice touristy streets, had a nice restaurant on site (more expensive, I didn't eat there) and is not far from Forbidden City (30-40 min walk, short subway trip), Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing Street, etc... At this price I highly recommend the hotel. The bed was a bit hard, but adequate.
