If you are looking for a 5 star Western style hotel in Beijing, this isn't it. But if you want to feel like you're a part of old wealthy Beijing, this is for you. We loved it. The grounds are lovely with several courtyards, some from the original residence, some new. The hotel furnishings in the common areas are all classic and elegant. We were given an upgraded 2 room suite with a large bedroom, a huge bathroom, and a separate living room. The rooms had hard wood floors, the bathroom was complete with a large shower, a separate soaking tub, and a bidet. The furnishings were a bit worn (stained throw rugs, torn bathrobes) but the furniture itself was quality. The king size bed mattress was very hard but surprisingly not uncomfortable. We were greeted by Sasha at the front desk, whose English was excellent. (Not everyone at the reception spoke understandable English but we didn't have much problem with that.) Sasha invited us to contact her later for a tour of the hotel grounds, which we did. Be sure to see the upstairs rooms used for entertainment and all of the historic artifacts. The location in the Hutongs is not convenient to major tourist sites but we had prearranged tours and nothing was too far away. We wandered the alleys nearby for shopping and dining and always felt safe; the neighborhood is old and poor but charming. We had reserved breakfast with our room and enjoyed eating downstairs with varied local and Western food. We would stay here again.

This place is a treasure box and exception after reviewing the mostly non-existent service and ability to understand western traveler's minimum needs in China's Hotels. Here in Han's Royal Garden almost everybody we met speaks English and helps in a very friendly way. We felt in good hands with the service inside the hotel as well as for travel facilities. WiFi in the rooms for free. And the historic place itself with five beautiful backyards and nice rooms is more than fascinating. Not perfect: The breakfast room downstairs is well-lighted but still not a bright start to a sunny day. The other, dining restaurant of the hotel has a famous ancient architecture, have a look! But the food seems to be more relevant to Chinese connoisseurs.

This hotel IS like a museum, but, ask yourself, would you choose to stay in a museum?

If you are looking for a comfortable, 5-star hotel that is a pleasure to return to after a busy day sightseeing in Beijing, stay elsewhere. After two nights here, we did, decamping to The Peninsula Hotel, which at RMB1,700 was similarly priced.

Our specific complaints were:

1. Inadequate heating throughout.

2. Bad plumbing: bright yellow water, bath and shower not draining, shower not working.

3. Very disappointing food, possibly acceptable in a 2-star hotel, but woefully deficient when paying £200 per room night.

4. Shabby decoration: worn carpets, broken lightbulbs, etc.

The hotel is fundamentally a poor design and seems to attract too few customers to maintain 5-star standards. The main dining room is underground and badly lit, not exactly a cheerful, bright start to the day.

Do yourself a favour, stay elsewhere!

Located right in front of the South Drum Tower and in the heart of the picturesque hutong district, Hans Royal Garden is a historical monument by itself, a museum, it breathes history. The property is a beautifully restored courtyard house which used to belong to a wealthy Chinese noble family. Restaurants, street foods, curio shops and sights are practically just 2 minutes walk away. The Forbidden City and Tiananmen are simply less 15 minutes cab ride away. The Houhai bar area is less than 20 minutes walk away. The only slight inconvenient thing is the cab drivers are reluctant to drive into the hutongs as most of them are not familiar with the hutong access roads.

The rooms are huge, tastefully furnished with dark wooden floorings and high ceilings. The writing desk, a huge wardrobe and a huge plasma television are nicely arranged. The bathroom is, again, huge with marble-finishing. One can soak in a hot bath tub after a long day exploring and sights of Beijing and catch up on news and entertainment at the same time. I was greeted by the nice scent of fresh laundry as I walked into the room. After travelling through Siberia and staying in Mongolian ger tents, this was a welcome relief. My heart was singing "hallelujah" when I saw the room.

Contrary to other reviews, I find the staff all speak excellent English. They were extremely helpful. The hotel manager personally showed my parents around their in-house art collections and ming vases at the upper floor, explained the restoration process (which is still on-going given the scale of the project) of the property. The staff helped us to arrange for Peking Opera tickets for my parents and escorted my parents to the main road to hail for cabs everyday. The hotel even remembered the note given to them 3 months before check-in and sent my mom a birthday cake at no extra cost. My dad carelessly left his cellphone on one of the cabs, the hotel staff volunteered to track down the cab driver for us and even pulled out the CCTV footage to trace the cab number. These little gestures mean a lot.

The red carpet may have lived past its prime and the buffet breakfast may be a tad dull for a 5-star hotel but the hotel is nothing but grand and beautiful. Staying in the Hans Royal Garden is a true cultural experience of living the life of the Nobles.

I was excited to stay in a hutong hotel in the center of Beijing. But besides being pretty, it was a very disappointing stay. It is a 3 star Chinese hotel with 5 star pricing. Most of the staff speak NO English and the rest speak only a little English and are not very knowledgeable about tourist attractions; the wifi in the room didn't work; my key stopped working on the last day; the breakfast was a typical boring buffet with little fresh food; the staff forgot to call for a taxi to take me to the airport; when the taxi did come they let another passenger take it. For the money you would be better off at any 5 star hotel.

We spent three nights at this exquisite hotel. It is an oasis within that noisy, crowded and fantastic city that is Beijing. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and their English was pretty good on the whole. The surrounding hunting area is wonderful to walk and explore. Would recommend to all.

Hans Royal Garden Hotel is like a time-machine, taking you back to the days of the emperors and the dynasties, when settling in in the hutong where the hotel is hidden (really, the taxi drivers have problems finding it...). The courtyard layout is very exiting and pretty, and send authentic feelings to the brain of how life must have been here when the noble family lived here in less than hundred years ago. Rooms are very pretty, very clean and traditionally designed. The hotel is on walking distance to the Hidden City and shopping area. Next time in Beijing, I will definately go back here!!!
