Description: The Schoolhouse is based on an abandoned village school and is part of a sustainable tourism business founded by Jim Spear & Liang Tang, longtime expat residents of Mutianyu, in 2006. We offer local foods made fresh from scratch to groups of 12 to 144 people with family or buffet style menus. Advance booking is required. The operating season each year is early March to November, closed for winter vacation. Individual guests and small parties are welcome to book a table at the intimate lodge cafe in our nearby hotel, the Brickyard at Mutianyu, which is open year-round. The Brickyard is a long-running Travelers Choice winner based on a repurposed glazed tile factory and includes extensive gardens. The outdoor terrace offering spectacular views of the Great Wall is open for dining in clement weather. The Brickyard can also serve groups of 12 to 144 people on the premises year-round by prior booking. We also operate a nearby noodle shop called Xiaolumian open for groups of 12 to 36 people from early March to October by prior booking. The noodle shop is also open on weekends and holidays 12:00-16:00 from April to October to individual guests and small groups.

It's a very interesting western food restaurant. It was old schoolhouse. When a westerner met a local girl and they started this restaurant in this area. It's on the food of The MuTianYu Great Wall. The environment is very good. There is also a glass-blowing shop onsite where you can see how they make it. The food is normal western food. Much more expensive than Chinese local food.

dog-friendly with nice and fresh environment; the rooms are spacious and clean. It gets very nice and quiet at night. Close to Mutianyu Great Wall, within walking distance. I would definitely recommend this place and I will visit again.

Friendly staff, even though they had managed to mess up our reservation, we wer quickly shown a table in one of the old class rooms. The kids were given crayons and paper, so they could draw nice pictures of the Great Wall experience we had just completed.
Well cooked food, warm mulled wine, all at affordable prices.

A westerner met a local girl and they started this restaurant in a former schoolhouse. It has nice food and the service was good. The placemats are drawing sheets and coloured crayons are provided (as 4 adults, we enjoyed this as much as any kids!). There is also a glass-blowing shop onsite where you can browse/purchase goods. The toilets were clean and the surroundings are pleasant. It’s not worth going out of your way for but definitely build it into your trip to The Great Wall of China.

Our private guide told us we have three choices for lunch: Chinese, Subway, or the Schoolhouse. We had to wait a little bit because we didn't have reservations, but it was late in the day, ~1pm. The atmosphere was good, especially for the kids and they had colored chalk for the kids to create a picture. The kids menu was a little limited. Our son had the fried trout sticks and fries. The pasta of the day was a little bland, bu the portion was a good size. Another table ordered the ravioli and it looked amazing. The burgers we ordered looked great (see photos), but they weren't the best we have ever had and they too lacked some in the flavor department. Overall, we thought it was a little pricey given the local wages, rent, and food cost. The most positive aspect of our experience was that the wait staff hung both of our older son's artwork on the wall and we were able to take a photo. It clearly wasn't that good and will likely be taken down after we left, but the smile on their face to have their work posted was priceless and worth the higher food prices.
