We had a fine meal here. Not cheap for Chinese standards, but you know that if you dine at the Peninsula (which in Beijing is a confusing combination between hotel and underground mall). Service was attentive and the food is great. Nicely decorated - although they cannot fully hide that they are in a mall :-)

The atmosphere/decoration is very good so this is a great restaurant to entertain and bring clients.

The food is very good but it is a mixed bag in a way - some are great and some are really average/passable. Order the prawns with mayonnaise/egg yolk & the steamed cod with garlic in a steam basket & the flat noodles cooked in white wine with dumplings - they are fantastic. The tofu dish with vegetable is so so as well as the sweet and sour pork (really oily)

Will recommend the restaurant and come back again, the food is good, even though inconsistent (some are good and some are very so so) but the atmosphere alone is worth it to return.

Lovely open Chinese setting. Great service from wait staff. Has English speaking staff. Food average. Food reasonably priced but drinks very expensive.

The food is really very good and the menu interesting, but the setting in The Peninsula shopping arcade behind the fountain is pretty horrible. The food prices are reasonable but the wine and mineral water prices are somewhat ridiculous, even by Beijing's high prices.

Huang Ting is located on the 2nd underground level of the shopping mall under the Peninsula hotel. Nested among luxury shops, the location didn't appeal much to me, but the interior of the place is actually nice. It's done in the style of a Chinese courtyard, but very upscale.

When I entered the restaurant at 18:30 on a Saturday, I was the only guest in the restaurant. Bad sign, since Chinese usually have their dinner early. Anyhow, had a look at the menu, which for a Chinese restaurant was comparatively compact.

I started my meal with smoked cold sea bass, not bad. Second was meat platter with BBQ'd pork, roast suckling pig and roast duck. Great dish. Pork was nice and the skin of the pig was extremely crispy. The roast duck was amazing, with a nice crisp skin and very juicy meat. Probably a nice place to have a full roast duck. This was followed by stirfried rib-eye beef and foie gras in pepper sauce. Another amazing dish. Melt-in-your-mouth meat, nicely complemented by the foie gras. Additionally I had broccoli and cauliflower with garlic. Perfect consistency and nice taste.

Service was quick and attentive, not a big challenge if the restaurant is empty. During the course of the meal, more diners entered, all foreigners or hotel guests.

All in all a great Chinese meal, one of the best I've had in a long time. So why then is the place so empty? For one, probably due to the location. Not everyone enjoys dining among Gucci, Prada and the likes. But most likely it's because prices match the surroundings. It's not overly expensive, but locals probably know where to get a similar quality of food at lower prices. Especially the 15% service charge is a real bummer and drives prices over the top.

Nevertheless, if you have no locals who can tell you where to get great Chinese food at more moderate prices and you are prepared to spend a little more, Huang Ting will not disappoint.
