“Best hostel ever”
Reviewed November 3, 2012 via mobile

almost stayed about 15days in chinabox and everything was excellent. Located near the downtown(xi si) and easy to take a transportations. The best thing was the service and hostel crews. Their effort for helping me out when i lost my camera and passport was so thanksful. I would like to this hostel if i have a chance to go back to beijing again.

I stayed in one of the rooms here, which was spacious and comfortable, if beginning to look a bit old and tired. The staff here are excellent. Great English, very helpful and a really good understanding of what travellers want and need. It's pretty small and has a friendly atmosphere so it's easy for solo travellers to get to know people. There's a small breakfast included, but out on the main road there's lots of small shops and stalls where you can fill up on dumplings. The only downside is that there isn't too much on the hostel's doorstep in terms of foreigner friendly restaurants/bars/cafes as say around Nanluogu Xiang, which is more of a backpacker district.

This hostel is tucked away in the Hutongs but only a ten minute walk to the nearest Metro (although this feels a lot further in 38 degrees with a backpack!)

Staff were great, really helpful and helped us to book train tickets to Shanghai plus a trip to the Wall at Mutianyu for a really good price.
Loved the free breakfast and arrival drink.
Room very small (2 bunks) and a/c didn't work very well but staff tried their best to fix it. Beds ok but very itchy and we got bitten a lot at night. Would definitely recommend a sleeping bag liner of your own even though they provided sheets.
Hot water 24hrs and laundry service

Getting taxis back to the hostel late at night was sometimes a problem- one driver couldn't find the hostel so just dumped us in a different Hutong at 1am- leaving us to walk back by ourselves (2 girls on their own). Make sure you take the hostel directions with you and maybe a map in Chinese

Stopped in Beijing on my way to and back from Tibet here this summer. Easy location to explain to a taxi and easy access by bus/train as well! Stayed a couple nights and had a great time meeting people from around the world and others right from home. Rented a bike for very cheap and got to ride all around Beijing to see Tiananmen square, parks, and all over the city.
All the staff were so helpful with everything, showing up real late in the night and early in the morning, awesome! They were kind enough to send my hat to me after leaving it in the hostel! Amazing people, great time, thank you so much!

Well they have a few thing that are part of your price ( that we all like as a backpacker) like a free breakfast. When you get here your 1st beers is free( and cold) on Monday nite they have a FREE BBQ and Wednesday nite a faimily dinner( ¥35) whitch is about $5 Aussie bucks and Friday nite a FREE dumpling . They have cold beers all the time( as a Aussie got to luv that and I did) the staff here speak good English . And will help you in any way . If is a great place to meet people and the metro is a 5 to 10 min walk. Shop at the end of the street. Hot shower all the time? They do do washing( cheap) for the same day. And will help with any information you need and what and how to get around

Room Tip: There is no pool or fitness centre . But for the price I will be back( and they have good COLD beer)

Worth considering if you are looking for hostel type rooms in Beijing. A little walk from the metro, but not too bad - even with a reasonably heavy back pack.
Clean rooms - private available.
Hot water plentiful
Laundry service
The staff are really helpful and friendly and sorted out a lost mobile phone for me - amazingly I got it back!
Breakfast is fair and plenty of opportunities to meet/talk with other travellers.

The Chinese Box is well located about a 10 minute walk from the Metro Station. It is a courtyard hostel in a typical Beijing Hutong. This is good as it means you feel as if you are living amongst normal Beijing citizens and you can get to know a little about how they live. The hostel was very sociable and the owners set up special functions to allow travellers to get to know each other. For any solo travellers looking to meet others this hotel would be a very suitable choice.
The room we had was a little bit dark and not all that clean. It was quite big but the bed was really large and took up most of the space. Although the bathroom and shower were fine, the air conditioning was very weak. For the price we were paying we thought it could have been a bit better. The breakfast was okay – we chose the muesli and coffee. Free internet was very useful.
Unfortunately when we arrived they explained to us that they had double booked the room so we would have to go to another hotel that they had arranged for us a few streets away for the second half of our stay. This was very disappointing as we had made the reservation a long time (around 2 months) in advance. They tried to give an explanation but it was not very clear what had happened and we wondered why they had not informed us about it much earlier, especially taking into account that just 1 week before our arrival we had e-mailed and re-confirmed the booking with them.
The owners did seem helpful in terms of giving advice to travellers although we were advised incorrectly about the best way to arrive to the Great Wall and ended up wasting about two hours of a day at the train station.

Bear in mind when using the metro in Beijing that it is usually very busy and can tire you out before you get to your destination. Ask at the hostel for details of the buses.
