This hotel is small, quaint, clean and very affordable. It was our favourite stay of the entire trip. The rooms are beautifully decorated as is the atrium. It's inviting charm makes you feel as though you are a guest in their home.
The girls that run the hotel are fantastic and cater to your every need. They also speak English very well and are a great resource for information and directions.
The location is fantastic: close to the subway, lots of local restaurants and late night shops and drinks. It was extremely hard for the taxi driver to find however, so I'd advise having a map, written directions and a phone number (all in Chinese) for the taxi driver. Our cab fare from the Rail Station was about 100 RMB.
The breakfast that is included in the morning is perfect: eggs, bacon, fruit and cereals. More than enough to get you out and seeing the sites without having to find a restaurant with pictures on their menus!
I would highly recommend this hotel to other travellers.

This small, inexpensive courtyard type hotel was a gem. A bit hard to find, even with the excellent directions supplied in English and Chinese (for the taxi driver) but delightful once you get there.

You enter through an attractive courtyard and are greeted by friendly staff with reasonable proficiency in English. The room was GREAT -- very large -- I stayed in the emperor suite with a four poster king bed encased in golden curtains. The bed was VERY comfortable with fresh clean white sheets and cozy duvets -- I slept like a baby! Bathroom was clean and fresh with lots of hot water and lots a clean snowy towels.

The rate included an American style breakfast -- hot, tasty -- bacon, eggs, sausages and a wide range of cereals, breads, and other goodies as well as coffee and a range of teas.

The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the subway -- which, after the initial "fumbling" was amazing cheap and very easy to get around on (station names are in Chinese and English).

For the more "faint of heart", the only down side was that, while close to the city center, it is in a part of town where there is little or no signage in any language other than Chinese and few people speak any English -- so even getting a meal close to the hotel was interesting involving lots of pointing at pictures on menus, or at other peoples plates, and gesticulating wildly LOL.

If you are out of your comfort zone when completely immersed in a very different, and mostly completely incomprehensible culture, this may not be the hotel for you, but if you are filled with a sense of adventure and want to experience "the good, the bad and the ugly" of Beijing - it is a WONDERFUL spot.

I will stay there again next time I am in Beijing :-)

Room Tip: I think any room would be great, for a few dollars more the Emperor Suite is "pretty cool"...

Michael's House is a small, traditional courtyard style hotel, 10minutes walk from the incredibly cheap and efficient subway. The staff speak good English and are always available to help. Our room was comfortable and spacious but the most wonderful part about the accommodation was to have good quality, clean, white sheets very day and towels! The bed was dreamily comfortable and a delight to come back to after a long day's walking around the various city sights.
There is a relaxing courtyard area for breakfast. Breakfast is buffet style and there is plenty of choice.
We have travelled all over the world and Michael's House is definitely one of the nicest hotels in which we have stayed. You need look no further.

The hotel is pretty difficult for cabs to find from the airport....so if you can print out the hotel directions in advance that would be helpful. Look out for the black cabs at the airport. We were approached by a van driver when we left the que who wanted 100 bucks to drive us to Michael's. The correct fare is about 15 bucks. We took the real cab, who got in a fender bender bender in the hotel alley. The streets are super narrow.
The lobby is absolutely charming. Rooms are quite nice off the lobby. TV noise can be bothersome if the guests next door have the volume up. Breakfast quite nice. The staff is great. If they know you have an early tour they will have coffee and some breakfast items out for you.
The tours are nice and feasonably priced. We did the 260 yaun tour to Mutianyu Great Wall that was great. (Ask about the toboggan ride down, instead of cable car both ways) . It came with lunch. Quite nice with about 10 different dishes for the table.
THere are two great restaurants nearby. A Szechuan rstaurant and one that specializes in Peking Duck. Ask for directions, they are vey close and convenient. And cheap!
The nearest subway is Jishuitan. About a ten minute walk. Adds a bit of walking after a long day of trekking in the city, but taxis are cheap and convenient.
Really loved the place. My wife did too.

After an extremely long day of traveling from Denver to Beijing, arriving to Michael's House was a pure delight. We immediately felt that we could sit back and relax. The hotel is very cozy, peaceful and clean. The atmosphere is inviting and warm. A great choice for travelers desiring a more intimate B&B type of experience. Also, we would truly like to thank Jenny, who was working the front desk at midnight upon our arrival. She was super sweet, helpful and patient.

Room Tip: We stayed in a standard double room~ small, but enough room for myself & my husband. Very clean...

This small hotel is what everyone said in previous reviews, which is why I chose it.
It is clean, comfortable, with all appropriate amenities, cozy, the staff is very pleasant English speaking and helpful, and good access to the subway system.
Breakfast was sufficient, but minimal as you would expect in a hotel with so few guests in the off-season.
The things I did not like:
1. For what it is, it was a bit overpriced.
2. The surrounding area is a poor neighborhood. Safe to walk through, even at night, but poor and unpleasant. Yes, after going through it, you arrive in an acceptable area with some selection of restaurants and bars. But you have to go through it first. Actually, as I was directing the taxi driver using Google-maps to the hotel, I was concerned that we got lost. The pleasant interior of the hotel is in striking contrast to its surrounding. (Either use Google-maps, or have the taxi driver call the hotel for directions.)
3. The hotel recommended to book a taxi for us for our trip to the great wall. It was overpriced but I was OK with that as they promised that this is a driver they know from an agency the work with. The car looked nice from the outside, but driver seat was broken and leaning backwards towards the passenger in the rear seat. And seat belts in the rear did not work. I can get a better taxi any time on any street in Beijing. No need to overpay for that. And when we came off the great wall, we had to look for the driver for 20 minutes. As he thought, that after 3 hours, which is known to be the time that people usually spend on the great wall, is when he has to have some food. So this referral damages the reputation of the hotel.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your review on tripadvisor.

Your positive comments on our staff service and facilities are appreciated and that is what we keep proud of , nevertheless we are more grateful for your telling us the deficiencies on our car renting outsourced service that alert us it is damaging our reputation. We will discuss this matter with our vendor and make re-selection if necessary.

We apologize for the inconvenience it has caused you.
As you know hailing a taxicab on the street is not always an easy matter ‘cause there are million of visitors need this service daily in Beijing. That’s why we outsourced this service to our vender for its guaranteed availability and safety although this exclusive door to door calling service cost is a bit of higher than on the street.
I also noted our neighborhood is not the area you prefer.
The decision to place the hotel in Hutong was not only done to enable guests to be in a relatively close proximity to a lot of attractions but also retains a very traditional and cultural atmosphere。
The hotel is also located in a place that has over 600 years of history when dates back to Yuan dynasty. The local station Jishuitan was also named after the landform it sits on, which, as it happens, was the largest water port in whole Beijing and was used hundred of years ago.

Today, people here are still living a traditional Chinese lifestyle with home cooked food sold on the streets. It is for these reasons that our guests chose this boutique courtyard-styled hotel and wish to meet more authentic Chinese culture and trueborn Beijing lifestyle. Hutong surrounding our hotel is an unique area, allowing for the such experience. It is regretful that this was not the charming location you had hoped for.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to feedback. I hope you will have a good time when travels bring you back to beautiful Beijing.

Michael's house really is a 'home away from home' atmosphere. We arrived on New Years Eve and were invited to share dinner and dumplings with the staff and other guests while toasting the new year. There is an equal mix of foreigners and local travellers staying here which was great - you all cross paths in the central courtyard and people were so friendly. The rooms were spotless and the beds were so comfortable; I had a fantastic nights sleep every night. Breakfast was also very good - fresh coffee, eggs, bacon, fruit, yogurt, cereal, toast. The location is in a real neighbourhood, a short walk to a subway station and the northern end of the HuaHai lakes. We started one day with a taxi ( 4-5 USD) to Tianamen square and then spent the day walking north through the Forbidden City, hutongs and HuaHai all the way home. Highly recommend if you are looking for a helpful, comfortable guesthouse atmosphere.
