We had the best stay of our trip around China here! A bit hard to find but we rang the hotel and passed the phone onto the taxi guy who was guided in by the lovely "Little" (one of the staff). Greeted at the door like long lost friends, the staff Jenny, Amy, Sophia and Little were fabulous. All speak English and are so helpful and thoughtful, providing whatever assistance we needed, direction, places to eat, umbrellas in event of rain, cups of tea and coffee etc. Michael's house is a courtyard style hotel (hutong) down a small alley, hence nice and quiet at nights sleep. Courtyard area ideal place to unwind in the evening and swap travel tales with other guests. Metro station is a 5 minute walk away and 2Y ( about 50 cents) will get you anywhere you want to go, easy!

Room Tip: Rooms are small but have everything you need with the bonus of the communal courtyard area to sit ba...

We stayed at Michael's in May and it was by far the best place we have ever stayed. The place is immaculate, quiet, and they speak excellent english which was a huge help. Our bed was really comfortable. We enjoyed getting beers out of the cooler and playing cribbage in the courtyard. The staff were very friendly. I do not think i will return to China, but if I did I would certainly stay here again!

If you want a hutong courtyard experience in Beijing there are other places you can stay, chances are they may be a little closer to central Bejing and the favoured tourist attractions, that said... I'm yet to find one that has such superb staff who will go to any lengths to make you feel at home and welcome you to their spotless and charming courtyard hotel. Taxi's are extremely cheap and readily available to get you around and the plus side is Michael's House is in a very quiet location so you can truly escape the hustle and bustle and save a considerable amount of RMB over what you would pay to be "closer to the action" I would not hesitate in recommending Michael's House to friends or family, all those who have already stayed on my recommendation have been delighted. The beds are the most comfortable I've slept in whilst in China, if sleep quality is important to you then you really should give this hidden gem a try.

We stayed here while visiting our son in Beijing and had chosen the hotel after reading all the recommendations on trip advisor. We were certainly not disappointed..our room was lovely and the staff were absolutely delightful. We met lots of fascinating people over breakfast each morning and enjoyed being able to relax in the lovely covered courtyard.
The walk to the station each morning was always fascinating...cycles and cars everywhere and in every direction! We enjoyed exploring round the streets and think the location was really good as a springboard to all parts of Beijing.
I would thoroughly recommend Michaels House..in fact I already have!

We were looking for a quiet, but beautiful, place to stay. We've definitely found a jewel. The staff is a most gracious host and most attentive to the guests wants and needs Happy we found it and we will be back. We will make this an annual event.

We wanted a hotel we could come "home" to each night after busy Beijing, and Michael's is it. Stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning and 3 nights at the end of our China trip. The courtyard, with its comfy couches and tables, was a nice place to read, write, and relax early in the morning and late at night. The room (we had two twin beds) was charming and clean, with comfortable mattresses, a small fridge, bottled water each day, a speedy porcelain kettle. Breakfast was fine (and predictable, which was good!) - scrambled eggs, meat, cereal, juices, bread, fruit. Staff speaks good English and is extremely helpful. Amy was super helpful in helping us plan and book our time outside Beijing. We were able to check in early when we arrived. Loved the neighborhood location - our taxi had trouble locating it the first time (watch for the small blue sign on top of a small red sign, and that's the right alley), but after that we had no trouble navigating. Taxis are convenient, subway is 15 minutes away, bus stop is 5 minutes. We frequented the massage business around the corner, which was open late - 1 hr foot massage for about $10 US.

The hotel is off the main road in a quiet neighborhood. It is not close to any of the major attractions, so walking is out of the question. Catching a taxi is a must. The Staff here is Awesome. Very friendly and helpful. We arrived early and were able to check in early. Our room had a King size bed, couch with additional seating at the desk. Breakfast is served in the beautiful covered courtyard each morning. Local fresh fruits, yogurt, toast, and scrambled eggs.
We stayed at other hotels closer to parks, temples and attractions. The only downside to this hotel is the location.

Room Tip: All rooms face the enclosed Courtyard. King sized bed with couch, but small bathroom.

Dear David,

Thank you for visiting Michael’s House during your recent trip to Beijing. We are absolutely delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and hope you come back again.
The decision to place the hotel in Hutong was done to enable are guests to be in a relatively close proximity to a lot of attractions. We felt that another location wouldn’t be as convenient as the subway here can get you to The Forbidden City, Beijing Zoo and The Summer Palaces in no time at all.
The hotel is also located in a place that has over 600 years of history, and dates back to the Yuan dynasty. This is a very historical area and retains a very traditional and cultural atmosphere. The local station Jishuitan was also named after the landform it sits on, which happens to the largest waterport in whole Beijing and was used hundreds of years ago.
Today, people here are still living a traditional Chinese lifestyle with home cooked food being sold on the streets. It is for these reasons that people wish to stay here.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to feedback. Anyway I hope you will have a good time when travels bring you back to beautiful Beijing.

B,Regards
Michael Wang
