“Excellent service in out-of-way neighborhood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

Our four nights at Michael's House were very good. The service provided by Amy, Sophie and Michael, the owner, was superb. As a group of two adults and four children, our countless support requests which included detailed directions and notes in Mandarin to assist drivers were always done politely, quickly and efficiently. Our two rooms as well as the courtyard were wonderful...spotlessly clean, comfortable and decorated with great attention to detail.

My only small negative is location. We were quite remote from the highest rated Beijing restaurants and sites. Having to walk through suburban neighborhoods for 15 minutes to the nearest subway was generally very interesting and perfectly fine for us. The only trick was finding taxis following dinner...tough to come by and many did not want to travel to our neighborhood.

I normally don't write reviews on tripadvisor but I really think that this place deserves a mention. I stayed here in March (2013) for 5 nights and had a really amazing stay. The room was really clean, comfortable, warm (needed at this time of year trust me) and very nicely decorated. The bed was very comfortable is rare in Asia as the beds are normally hard. The location is very good, just make sure you have the address in Chinese! But I think the most important thing to mention about this hotel is the staff. They go out of their way to make your stay as perfect as possible. From walking us to the ATM, local laundry, ordering us Chinese food, translating Chinese addresses and showing us the sites of the Beijing, these staff were absolutely brilliant, with good english skills. Michael's House definitely feels like a home, and you can relax in the central area and drink some Chinese tea and chat away to the friendly staff (especially Amy with her brilliant english and generous personality) and other travellers. I would highly recommend this place to anyway who wants to stay in Beijing!

The street was narrow and gray and even the taxi driver wasn't sure where we were going, but it was worth the bit of trouble we had in locating this jewel of a hotel. The people -- especially the young women at the front desk -- are fabulous. Helpful, courteous, friendly and eager to please. The breakfast buffet was a pleasant surprise -- lovely to look at and so good. It was mostly Western fare with a bit of Asian thrown in. We booked our train tickets to Xi'an and our Great Wall tour with them before we arrived. The room was comfy and the towels were very large and very fluffy. When we had a 7 a.m. departure for our tour, the staff made sure we had an adequate choice of breakfast items to get us started on the day, even though breakfast wasn't served until 8. The 12 rooms are located in a square around the center courtyard which was open, but is now enclosed. It has a homey, quiet, smallness to it that we found very appealing. As we plan our October return, we are thinking it must include a stay at Michael's. Be careful as you enter -- there's a three-inch step you may not be expecting if you are busy with luggage and opening the door.

stayed here for 5 days before spring festival. The most comfortable bed I have ever stayed in!!!

Nice and warm hotel with a chinese twist! with carp ion a pond in the courtyard, its a home away from home. Even in the middle of the night with jet lag the reception staff could not have done more for you!

Breakfast is not the best so dont rely on it for fuel for the day, but it is suffice if you get there before the Koreans eat it all!!!

All in all a very clean, comfortable, helpful and homely hotel especially when you have full day tours!!!

Room Tip: beds sssooo comfortable!!!

Micheal's is a small guesthouse with traditional courtyard layout. The staff are very friendly and helpful, we booked a Great Wall Tour here train tickets to our next destination. We had a twin room which was cosy although a little too warm, beds were very comfortable western style. Breakfast was adequate and there was a variety of breakfast items and drinks to choose from, the hotel doesn't have a restaurant on site for evening meals. Micheal's is located a 10 minute walk to the subway and within a 10 minute walk of the guesthouse are Chinese restaurants and some street food vendors, The area is quiet with Micheal's located down a little alley off the road. I would recommend staying here for a quiet and peaceful stay.

We stayed here for 9 nights and had a really comfortable stay.

The positives; the place was really very clean and rooms and towels were changed daily. The staff are friendly and as helpful as they can be especially Sophie, who's english is great and will go out of her way to help. Breakfast was ok but nothing special. There's also a really nice reception area to socialise in the evenings. It's close to a subway station but a little out the way. There are some great little restaurants near by, especially a sishuan one about 5 minutes along the main road. There is also a 24 shop across the main road that's handy when you get a craving for something western.

The negatives; the wifi is really very poor, that's a big negative for us as we are travelling for 6 months and want to be able to communicate with home occasionally- it drops out every few minutes and can't handle more than a couple of people using it at a time.
The showers only provide a very limited amount of hot water.
The staff were helpful but not as much as we expected (excluding Sophie) from reviews- We asked a member of staff to help us with train tickets but they actually take a commission and couldn't get the same price as getting it ourselves, so that what we did. The cleaning and kitchen staff live there (we think) and are really noisy at 6am when they start work.

Just as a note: we are backpackig and although we knew that Michaels house wasn't really a youth hostel we expected to see more young travellers but it's really not that kind of place.

Overall experience was positive but a little underwhelming after reading reviews.

I have stayed here twice. The second time by choice as we liked it so much the first time. It’s simple and small. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are generous and warm. Bathrooms are simple but clean and adequate. Breakfast is good. The location is fantastic, very close to the lakes and night clubs around them and the décor is wonderful. A very authentic feel without being kitsch. The central courtyard creates a friendly social meeting place to chat with fellow guests and relax

Myonly complaint is the wifi is lousy. Constantly drops out in your room and you have to go to the central courtyard to get a decent connection.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the North side
