“A Surreal Experience”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

When my husband and I had a chance to go to China on a tour, and one that was very reasonable in cost, we couldn't afford NOT to go. But the absolute highlight of the trip was the Great Wall. I have seen many pictures of the Great Wall, and they are all breathtaking, but to actually be there and climb up the magnificent structure is totally unbelievable. The climb is not for the feint of heart, but we were very impressed with some of the elderly people on our tour, and the fact that they were able to climb as much of it as they did. The stairs are very steep in several places, and very uneven. You need good shoes and maybe someone to help you out if you have difficulty with climbing in high altitudes. Luckily for us, the morning rain had stopped and dried up before we got there, as the stairs and walkway would be very slick if wet.

Our only regret was that our tour bus got to the wall late in the day, and we only had about two hours of daylight left. We needed to make a decision on which direction to climb, and chose the shorter, less difficult path. But it was still beautiful and amazing. We took several pictures and I did not want our time to end there. I would love to return to China one day, just to climb more of the wall.

“Magnificent views!”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

Two of us climbed up from Jiankou village to the section of the Great Wall above in mid-October. The guidebook (Lonely Planet) said it would be a 40 minute hike - but this could only be with rocket propulsion. In fact it took a reasonably fit 2 hours to reach the Wall, with the last section being extremely steep, needing hand-over-hand clambering. Luckily it was dry, as after rain it would be positively scarey. The views from the top were just magnificent, with the Wall snaking round the other side of the valley as well. And we had it to ourselves. So it was all very worthwhile. We made it down in 1hr 20 mins. Be prepared - this is a route for walking boots and trek poles! I wouldn't do this alone, in case of accident. And bring your own food, as the joy of this place is its remoteness and there's nothing to be had (at least not after the official end of the tourist season on 1 October).

“A Must See, Amazing!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

My husband & I went on a cold, early, rainy Sunday morning. This turned out to be a great, time because hardly anyone was climbing. We had time to stop, look, enjoy, and take in the breath taking amazement of this achievement. Even with the rain the views were amazing! You need to do this while you are in good shape. The rain made the climbing a bit slippery and dangerous. I wouldn't have missed this for the world and would love to go back.
This needs to go on your list of "not to be missed" in your lifetime.
