“Marriott City Wall Beijing, China”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

This hotel was lovely. The week before we stayed here, we had stayed at the JW Marriott Beijing on business. The Marriott City Wall was 98% equal to the JW in all aspects, with exception of the price, which was definitely lower. The staff were wonderful, spoke flawless English, and were more than accommodating. We upgraded to Executive Level, which was more than worth the additional $55 per day. Breakfast is "continental", however, it offers just about as much choice as most restaurants. We enjoyed their evening cocktail hour, from 5:00 to 9:30, as well as the enormous selection of "appetizers". Lovely hotel! Would definitely stay there again.

If you need to be in the Jianguomen area, this is a decent hotel. It's a very large property next to a train station -- neither the rooms nor the public spaces have much character -- that's efficient and at an ok price. It's a better value if you're a gold/platinum member and have lounge access. The lounge is spacious and well-stocked, with large views of the city.
Leaving the hotel by cab can be a hassle -- the cabs have to drive a painfully circuitous route to get back on the main road. I'd suggest walking down the street to grab a cab or ducking into the metro a few blocks away.

We stayed in this hotel overnight last year and found our room comfortable and clean. It was nicely decorated with a modern feel to it and the beds were furnished with plush pillows and comfortable mattresses. However, room size was on the small side. A nice feature of our room was the implementation of wall sockets which can accommodate various international AC adapters.

Buffet breakfast had a variety of Chinese cuisine, all served in a huge restaurant but taste wise it was okay, not great. The restaurant even offered buffet dinners when we were there. There's also a lounge which offered live music at night.

Overall we enjoyed our stay here and would consider staying again on a future trip to Beijing.

I stayed in this hotel for one night during a layover in Beijing. The rooms are large and clean, the food is very good and they provided free internet. The location is not close to much except the train station. You need to take a taxi to get to the forbidden city and other attractions.

My wife and I traveling to Beijing for several days in April. We booked into the Marriott Beijing City Wall Hotel via Marriott's website. The hotel is built into a large, four tower complex a short cab ride from the major sites. Beijing is the land of the $ 3.00 taxi ride to most central city destinations.

The hotel is well maintained and very oppulent. Our room was spacious and well maintained. Really great beds. The staff was extremely frienfly and attentive.

There are two subway stops nearby, however cabs are a better choice for getting around. Each time you get into a cab the hotel equipped us with a card with the hotel's address written in English and Chinese, for the return cab ride back. Few taxi drivers spoke English.

We would return to this hotel - We had a great time!

Marriot with everything you are used to from the brand. Great swimming pool (25m), exec lounge with good snacks and drinks and top located above all. Perfect to walk around the huge city of beijing. Need inprovement: the steam room and the language skills of the staff.

It's a shame I can only give a 3-point rating. The hotel is very nice with great potential, but on the most important moments, the execution failed which caused our stay to be less pleasant than it could have been. I will not go into too much detail and the management apologized and tried to "compensate", but the damage was already done. So, the main plusses and minuses are:

+ Nice, big hotel, typical Marriott

- In April, the entire hotel, including rooms, has no proper climate control. The lobby lounge is a cold fridge with a few guests all dressed in winter jackets. A shame because this could be a nice hang-out in evening gown. The aircon in the room can only blow 'natural' air which leaves the room too cold at night and too hot during the day if the sun shines. The staff told me this is because of 'regulations' and/or 'supplier' issues

+/- Staff are all nice and have the best intentions, but the average level of English is so poor that requests are misunderstood a little too often

- 3 out of the 3 Virtual Concierge orders I sent in through internet before check-in were messed up in poor execution. These were my wedding anniversary surprises I planned for my wife, but the celebration turned into repeated stress because the staff manages to mess up very clear written and tick-box confirmed orders

- Room service called me at 8:05am in the morning one day to 'confirm' something that could and should have been 100% clear without any need for confirming, waking up the entire family from a deep well-deserved sleep including our 2-year old baby. Shame on you, Marriott, never EVER call to the room before 9:00am unless it is of critical importance!

+ The upgrade to the 'executive' lounge is quite nice. There's nothing 'executive' about it (families, kids, everybody hangs out there) and the staff is very nice and good and the food, snacks, breakfast and drinks are excellent

- Don't book an airport pick-up or drop-off with the hotel because you can easily arrange it through any of the many tour guides at half the price and identical comfort

- Room service is so-so: the first ~ USD 40.- Marriott Burger for lunch arrived only after 45 minutes and was stone-cold with a tiny portion of equally cold fries. Our 2nd try for dinner was better and the food was warm and quite tasty, apart from the Ceasar Salad which was just a lump of lettuce with mayo-like dressing

+ The pool is nice and big

+ There is a nice bistro where you can buy things to take away ranging from baby wipes to slices of pie

- The restaurants we tried were so-so: the Italian cuisine Provincia served OK food with poor supermarket-quality Jacob's Creek wine. The Chinese cuisine Pearl had rather nervous staff and our Beijing Duck was nothing special and way too cold. The bistro that serves buffet and a mix of a-la-carte options is just way too big and breathes a factory-feeling while the wonton soup was average

+ Service is prompt to react and deliver, under the condition that your request in English was understood

So, really a hotel with 2 faces while as a regular visitor of the Marriott chain, I expect to see the 'Marriott face'. All in all, our 5-night stay was enjoyable, but the experience could have been so much better with more attention to simple execution.

Room Tip: Go for the upgrade to the 'executive' wing with lounge access. It is worth the extra. The ro...
