Traveled with a Gate 1 group. Upon our arrival, we were given a room with a double bed (wanted twin). Checked the bathroom and discovered a leak. Contacted our tour guide and she made the arrangements to change the room. Bus boy helped us with the baggage. Very helpful.
The lighting in the room was dismal. The lowest wattage bulbs were used and I do believe that it was done, so that you wouldn't notice the filthy carpets. The bed was hard, but I didn't mind. On a whole the room was clean. There are no draws in the room; however, they do provide conventors (a plus). The hotel also provides robes and slippers. I place a great deal of emphasis on having WiFi. None is available at this hotel, and they charge for internet service. The carpet in the main dining room needs to be replaced, because it's past the shampoo stage. We order soup to go, but they didn't have containers. They gave it to us in bowls, but allowed the waitress to bring it to our rooms.(a plus). Breakfast was an eye opener. To Westerners it would be lunch or dinner. If you like cold cuts and cheese you can make do. If you like your coffee strong, bring your own. The provided the first two bottles of water free. I don't know how much they charged for water, because we brought it from our bus driver (2 for a dollar). The location was not important to us because we went to our various locations by bus. (Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and the Beijing Zoo, the pandas). The staff were helpful, but I would not recommend staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: I can't recommend one

Hotel room was clean except the carpet was badly worn. Lighting in bathroom was very poor. Good water pressure and plenty of hot water. However, no airconditioning, but pop out window offered some relief. Opening the window also allows the Beijing smog to enter and the street noise is bad until after midnight. Thank goodness it was in the 30's outside or we would have been very uncomfortable during our stay. Buffet breakfast was crowded with our tour and another tour group along with a wedding party trying to eat at the same time. Food was very good, though. The wait staff at breakfast, the front desk and lobby bar staff seemed overwhelmed most of the time. However, they were friendly and spoke English. One window was out on the second floor with a piece of plywood covering the window when we arrived on our bus.

The lobby was cold most of the time so you had to sit with your coat on in the lounge area. In the US, they would have rated a 2 star.

Room Tip: The hotel needs to be updated. If you choose to stay here go in the winter or early spring. The su...

I was in room 727.
The Good: Located near Temple of Heaven Park. Located near pearl market and shopping and a very good authentic noodle restaurant and convenience store. They provide two small bottles of water in the bathroom each day. Water in on minibar is expensive. Nice hard bed and bedding was clean. Toothbrushes, combs, shampoo, shower gel, lotion provided in bathroom. Hi speed internet using provided ethernet cable. Large selection of western and Chinese foods offered at breakfast. The bad: Not a four star hotel. Room maintenance/housekeeping left much to be desired. Mini frig empty. Only two tea bags provided. No coffee service. Water kettle rusty. Safe didn’t work. Tub drain plug didn’t work. Very poor in-room lighting. No wifi. Only one English TV channel (CNN.) And, as other reviews have mentions, you will be asked about missing items (even when housekeeping didn’t provide.)Slow elevator. Smokers in hotel. Caution should be used when crossing streets. Bicycles and motor scooters do not stop for anything, even crosswalk signals. It is just best to cross the street when there is no oncoming traffic in ANY direction. We had a most unpleasant time when we stayed here last summer. The staff actually refused to open the 'leisure centre' on two occasions saying that it was closed those days. This was despite the presence of a sign sayin it opened every morning! Also, the ' leisure centre' consisted of a treadmill and bike in a room the size of a large en-suite bathroom. We made our best effort at communicating in Chinese, using a guide to point at pictures when stuck, but were met with impatience by the reception staff who insisted on shouting back to us in Chinese. One example of this is when we asked which direction to walk in to go to the Temple of Heaven. We used the term 'Tian Tan ', the Chinese for Temple of Heaven, which is the name of the hotel itself. Blank looks all round and an un-necessarily loud, unhelpful reply. One of many such occasions in this hotel. Also, the menu for breakfast and dinner is very limited and portion size is small. The menu doesn't have an English translation either. You can draw your own conclusions as to whether or not the waiting staff assisted us at all. I most definitely would not recommend this hotel. Stay Anywhere else!

First major complaint was there was no wifi anywhere in the hotel. They have a hard line for a lap top but rubbish for us IPad and tablet generation. They have a business suite but you have to pay a silly amount of money (per minute). I hardly think this can advertise as a business hotel for this reason. Rooms were big but the mini bar was not stocked, the bath plug would not work and they are not prepared for early check out (they couldn't cancel the card charge before 7am resulting in follow up with hotel). Location was ok but you need a driver to make the most of it. Breakfast was good and the staff friendly. Mixed feelings.

We were part of Gate1 Tours so we didn't have a choice on the hotel but we were pleasantly surprised with this hotel. The beds of course are very hard but what bed isn't in China? The breakfast wasn't amazing but they had coffee, juice, bread, and chinese food.

There is a Jian Market about three blocks away. We went there to buy drinks and snacks. (Check out the different flavored pringles and oreos...we brough those back as little gifts for our friends!) The Temple of Heaven is about a 10 minute walk and there is also a pearl market nearby. There is the Red Dragon Theater (Kung Fu Show) across the street if you are looking for something to do near the hotel. You can either walk across the street and get the tickets or ask the Bell Desk.

If you have a chance, catch a taxi to Dongumen Night Market. Be sure to get the hotel card so that they can take you back. It was about 15 yuan to get there from the hotel. On the way back we tried to catch a taxi and they wanted to charge us 100 yuan. We walked a block away to a nearby hotel and caught a taxi from there. It cost us 19 yuan to get back. The only thing I wish was that it was closer to the train station so that we could explore on our own instead of worrrying about a taxi trying to rip us off.

Tip: We typically leave the Do Not Disturb on and don't have anyone clean our rooms. The tub in our room did not keep the water in well so when we showered the floor got a little wet. We ended up putting towels on the floor...to make a long story short, we saw housekeeping outside our door and we just exchanged the towels. We said we didn't need the hand towels. Before you can check out, someone goes up to your room and makes sure all the things (towels, tv remote, etc.) are in your room - they told us that we took two hand towels. We told them what happened, then they had to call the girl on duty and and verify with her that she did not give us the hand towels. The entire process took an extra 25 minutes. Also if you don't have them clean your room they will not give you your free bottle of water.

There are two types of hotels in China: hotels that make an attempt to cater to Westerners and make them feel welcome; and hotels that are primarily for Chinese people that some unfortunate Westerners stumble into. The Tiantan hotel is the latter. It claims to be rated 4 stars but it really like a 2 or 3 star hotel. The beds are hard, the pillows are filled with some type of weird beads, the breakfast is mainly Chinese (with some attempts made for Western tastes (cereal, egg station, breads). The corridors stink of smoke and most of the literature in the room is in Chinese. If you're Chinese this is probably fine for you, but if you're not and you have some standards, go somewhere else.

Room Tip: If you ask for non-smoking, check out the room, because they don't seem to know what this means.
