I ended up booking this hotel last minute. It is a larger courtyard hotel, so rooms are likely easier to get than at a smaller property and the courtyards are lovely. The hotel was first a residence, then a temple, then a newspaper office, and finally a hotel.
The hotel is very close to the Gulou subway stop, so very handy for transportation. The prices seemed good for the location, but note that there is a great range in price between rooms. The cheapest rooms are very small, and the odor from the drains seems to be in issue in those rooms more than the others. Also, some rooms are in the larger main building and the door opens inside, while others are in the courtyards with doors opening outside.
I stayed in the second from the bottom tier room. Oddly, the room was very small, and the bathroom was very large. The room had traditional-style furniture, two beds, a small desk, a wardrobe, and no fridge. It was clean and comfortable. Another plus was that the room had good carpet that wears well and does not tend to show stains. The internet worked fine for us. It was very quiet during our stay.
The place has a decent amount of charm. There are many birds that are hung out in cages during the day, for example. The breakfast selection was limited and service was poor--okay but not a great value if not included in the room. There are quite a few restaurants within walking distance. Otherwise, hotel service was good and staff were friendly.
This is a rather underrated hotel in Beijing, in my opinion. It is not the nicest hotel, the cheapest, or the most charming, but it doesn't score badly on any of those counts, and offers a lot for a moderate price.
