Show lessWe are so glad you took advantage of the tour early in your trip - we find our guests who take the tour on the first or second day feel so much more empowered to sample local dishes and street food the rest of the their time in China! Thanks for taking the time to review your experience with UnTour.
We had so much fun walking through the little streets called 'hutongs" of the Old Beijing area thanks to our quite professional guide Chang (with a perfect English by the way which had not always been the case with other day tour guides in Beijing) so we finally got to understand ALL the anecdotes and the history behind Chinese food. Chang took us to seven different places so you'd better be hungry. I felt kind of guilty first because of the leftovers but you are allowed to take some back to your hotel with you for later. I wish we had done this food tour right when we arrived in Beijing because we would have known right away what and where to eat decent and authentic food. I also appreciated the international vibe of this experience since we got to meet other people from Australia, Indonesia and Europe around the table. At the end, Chang gave us a very well detailed recap note of all the places we had been to and with all the dishes we had tried. We also got something to clean our hands and some fruity candies to soothe our mouths... for me that's the kind of details that testify to the seriousness and professionalism of this business! Thank you once again for all the great souvenir pictures that we made that evening:-)
Thanks for your kind words - the best thing about food tours is getting to sample SO MUCH FOOD in just a few hours, especially when you're traveling solo and have limited stomach/table space. We're glad to hear you took our advice to come hungry and enjoy all the tastings we sample along the tour route. We’re also pleased to hear you enjoyed the legends behind the dishes – and meeting all your fellow UnTourists! We seriously have the most fun guests ever. Come visit us again in Beijing or Shanghai soon!
I took the Old Beijing dinner tour. There were only five of us, six with our guide, Chang. Our guide was just wonderful! She was full of fun, knowledgeable, and very enthusiastic. We went to places that we wouldn't know exist, places that have great food and where locals eat. We ate jianbing, donkey burger, mongolian hotpot, biang biang mian (a type of noodles/pasta), dumplings and famous local chicken wings. We were in a food coma at the end. And a very nice surprise is that she also got us local beers. We didn't know that. Overall, a very fulfilling wonderful night. Can't recommend it enough.
We're so glad to hear that you had a perfect night with UnTour Beijing! Thanks so much for joining us - we hope to see you again on another Beijing tour. Or let us know if you're ever in Shanghai!
We did the evening street food walking tour with Garth and everything was fantastic. We have lived in China for 3 years and Garth showed us dishes that we have never tried before. It was really a history and food tour. Garth was so knowledgeable about Beijing and food. He explained all about the Beijing Hutong's and the origin's of the foods we ate. Excellent food all evening. We had teenagers with us who were thoroughly engaged all evening as well. Garth was great about answering specific questions and providing information on where to eat, recipes and where to buy cooking equipment. Be ready to eat and walk. I recommend doing this walking tour early in your Beijing trip as you will be able to get good recommendations on where to eat the rest of your stay.
Yay! We strive to present something new and interesting about the local food scene to all of our guests, whether it’s their first day in China or they’ve lived here for years, so we're always happy to hear when a local expat discovers new dishes on our tour. We hope to eat with you again soon :)
We did the Old Beijing food tour in early July and I can say it was one of the absolute highlights of our travel to China. Our guide Kelly made sure we spend a perfect night out in some of Beijing's Hutongs. Not only did she provide perfect organisation and a fun trip around the back alleys of a fascinating neighborhood, but offered an awesome mix of interesting history, fascinating food knowledge and great anecdotes. The places she took us were all more than worth the visit and hard to impossible to find without local knowledge. And the food couldn't have been any better. If you do one guided tour in Beijing go for this one.
