“Great place in a great location”
Reviewed April 8, 2014 via mobile

Okay, so it took me a little while to find (do not cross the road when leaving the subway, take a left at the end of the street) and when I was close I was a bit dubious about it from the outside. However incr i had entered I was very happy with this place. The staff are friendly and helpful, the beds are comfortable, they have cheap drinks available and have a good chill iut area. The showers were good and the staff can arrange trips/transport for you within seconds. One downside - the wifi was a bit slow at times but hey ho. If visiting Beijing again I would definately use this place

Loved my stay here. Hosts were incredibly friendly and spent a lot of time at checkin explaining the local area and making sure we enjoyed our stay. The hosts could also arrange local trips which saves the hassle of arguing with shady and overpriced tour operators. Rooms quite nice as hostels go. In a safe and convenient area, although is down some small side streets so is a little hard to find initially. The other guests were nice and sociable, though it isn't a party hostel. Will definitely stay here if in Beijing again

City walls was amazing. As soon as we arrived we were given a map of the city and taken through all the main attractions and where we were in relation. The service is outstanding and they speak English really well.
Only thing I would advise is to try and get a room that doesn't face the courtyard, ours did but as it wasn't peak season it wasn't too busy/noisy but can imagine peak season being a bit noisy.
Overall would DEF stay again

Great location for walking around and soaking up local atmosphere. Minutes walk to wonderful market and beautiful Beihai park. Both hosts are extremely helpful with anything you ask: directions, train tickets, subway information, finding restaurants etc. Atmosphere is great: social if you want it, but also quiet. Beijing can be a big cold city, this place makes you feel at home and in friendly hands. Rooms are small, but clean and comfortable. Common room is warm and cosy. We love this place!

We had a good stay here. We stayed a private double room. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was decent. The neighborhood is very safe. However our room was not very clean nor were the shower and bathroom.
One big criticism I would have is that it is advertised as being located very close to the north gate of the forbidden city but you cannot enter the forbidden city at the north gate, only the south gate, which means walking around the walls to the Tienanmen square side, roughly an extra 2km walk. The nearest subway station is about 1 km from the hostel. As far as hostels go its decent but if I was in Beijing again I would pay a bit extra for a decent hotel.

Dear friend:

-Thank you so much being with us.

--The room you stayed has already been renovated 3 weeks ago. It's pretty new now.

--By the way, Visit The Forbidden City ,south gate is the only entrance, north gate is the only exit.
Wherever stay in Beijing, even by the side of south gate, one must walking back from outside ,
Nobody can save that distance you mentioned.

Best wishs.

My first time in Beijing, and my first time staying in a hostel, was fantastic, thanks in large part to the staff and the character of City Walls. A friend and I had a bit of a whirlwind trip to Beijing over a weekend, and stayed in the hostel for two nights. I immediately liked the Hutong location; very quiet, and a world away from the sprawling open spaces of more modern areas of the city.

We had a private twin room, with a ground floor bathroom and beds upstairs. I loved the set-up. The room was clean, comfortable, and surprisingly spacious. It was November-damp and chilly in the room when we arrived, but a few minutes with the private climate control took care of that!

The location is unbeatable. We had a day tour of the Mutianyu Great Wall (set up by the great staff at the hostel), but the central location meant we were able to hit up Tiananmen Square, a night market, Jingshan Park, and the Forbidden City in less than 36 hours.

The staff is wonderful. Breakfast each morning was tasty and prompt; we were supplied with a map of the city, comprehensive directions to each attraction we wanted to see, and our transportation back to the airport was quickly and easily arranged on Sunday afternoon.

The taxi will not enter the Hutong alleys, but we were dropped off right at the entrance to the alleyway (next to a playground bustling with Ping Pong and Jianzi players each morning!) and the hostel is a short walk through the alleys. The hostel supplied us with spot-on directions to find them in the somewhat labyrinthine alleyways, but if you get lost, just have the name of the hostel printed out in Chinese and show someone you meet along the way - they'll point you in the right direction!

This hostel feels very secure and safe, and it was certainly comfortable. The courtyard dining/reception area is amazing in terms of decoration and ambience. If I return to Beijing I will not hesitate to book at City Walls again - thanks for a great weekend!

Room Tip: I prefer private rooms for security when I'm out and about, so I would recommend a private twin...
