“I would book this courtyard hostel again”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013

Locating the courtyard hostel was not as bad as many people have commented, we just researched before arriving. Find the Nianzi Hutong on the map first. We got off the metro at Nanluoguxiang but you could also use Beihai North, it's a bit more scenic. It is about a 15 minute walk from the metro to the Hostel. The entrance to the Hutong is on the North side of the street from Jingshan Park. To enter the Hutong you pass a gas station and a small park heading East and take a left into the Hutong right after the small park. Follow the walkway as it banks to the right and you will see the illuminated sign outside.
I enjoyed the courtyard hostel setting. It was nice to have a comfortable space to unwind or have a meal. The rooms off the courtyard were fairly quiet, there was only one morning that I used earplugs of the 5 nights we were there. I guess it depends on the other guests at the time what the noise level will be.
We stayed in a double bed en suite room. The rooms were adequate. We got one bath towel and one hand towel per person. There was an individually controlled air conditioner in each room. There was an individual water heater in each bathroom. There is also a small bank of lockers for guest use.
The staff was very helpful. You get a free map and they explain where some of the attractions are. (We didn't really like their suggestions for food). They scheduled our day trip to Mutianyu Great Wall; however, we paid 280 RMB and I think others on the same tour paid 250 RMB per person. They mailed post cards. Generally, they were nice and always greated us when we came in.
The courtyard hostel provided a limited menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner which was affordably priced and tasted great. I really liked the noodles for breakfast. They have bottled water, beer and chocolate bars all for purchase.

We stayed 6 days there. Very helpful and friendly staff. They helped us book reservations at the Beijing Opera, and Mutianyu Great Wall. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7:00 until 21:00, which is very convenient, and the food is great. They also sell bottled water, juice and fresh fruits. Our room was off the courtyard, so very quiet and comfortable beds. We had no problem finding the place since we had printed out the address in chinese, as well as photos of the entrance of the hutong. Once inside the hutong, lucklily, the people who live there guided us to our destination.

The guesthouse is quite hidden in the old town, it will not easy to find it by yourself. We had a Chinese friend with us who has battled a bit till get there. The place is very nice, and has character however, the room next to the reception is noisy and we couldn't get a good night sleep. The staff was very helpful and allowed us to have a shower before our night train to Lhasa

Room Tip: Don't take the room next to te reception

This was our favourite hotel in China. It is a bit of old China. Situated in a hutong in the heart of Beijing it is central to all the sites. The hotel staff are so very helpful and gave us a list of all the tourist sites which gave directions and we carried this with us. They also told us what to beware of in the way of scams. We ate our meals here and they were good, the tea came in a huge pot.
The room was off a central common area and it was clean with private bath. We loved this place, it had lots of ambiance and interesting decoration and artifacts. They also offer whatever tours you wish. Would recommend this over any modern hotel. Would definitely stay here again. Tip: Just make sure you get the Name of the Hostel and address in Chinese for the taxi driver. Have the taxi driver phone and someone at the hotel will meet the taxi as it does not go up the Hutong. It is a bit difficult to find but well worth the effort.

Room Tip: We had a room outside the door to the common area in the hallway and this was the quieter area. Als...

Nice place with helpful staff. The rooms are cozy, the location is great (it is near to lot of places) and it is very easy to go to everywhere using the map and the directions that they provide. They arranged our Great Wall at Jinshanling tour (great!) and bought train tickets for us.
I really recommend it!

Sitting on the City Walls gives you a little slice of life in a hutong in a great location just North of Jingshan Park. The staff are unfailingly helpful and generous with travel advice. I particularly recommend organising a trip to the Great Wall with them! The rooms are cozy, the central courtyard is a nice social space and the dumplings from the in-house restaurant are delicious. Recommended!

Our family of four (two 60 somethings and two 20 somethings) stayed here for 4 days at the beginning of our 3 week trip to China and 4 days at the end. The first 4 days were perfect for getting oriented to Beijing and China in general, getting over jet lag, and making a general tour of the city. The last four days were like coming home and we saw the city in greater depth after having spent two weeks in other areas. The reviews by others commenting on the high service level, kindness and general competence of the staff is spot on. This is not a luxurious place, but it is comfortable enough, the location in the hutong is great and the availabllity of food and hot water made it an excellent choice for us. But above all - it is the kindness and assistance that makes this hostel stellar.

Room Tip: We wanted privacy when we first arrived - and to be together - so we rented the whole dorm area. It...
