Locating the courtyard hostel was not as bad as many people have commented, we just researched before arriving. Find the Nianzi Hutong on the map first. We got off the metro at Nanluoguxiang but you could also use Beihai North, it's a bit more scenic. It is about a 15 minute walk from the metro to the Hostel. The entrance to the Hutong is on the North side of the street from Jingshan Park. To enter the Hutong you pass a gas station and a small park heading East and take a left into the Hutong right after the small park. Follow the walkway as it banks to the right and you will see the illuminated sign outside.
I enjoyed the courtyard hostel setting. It was nice to have a comfortable space to unwind or have a meal. The rooms off the courtyard were fairly quiet, there was only one morning that I used earplugs of the 5 nights we were there. I guess it depends on the other guests at the time what the noise level will be.
We stayed in a double bed en suite room. The rooms were adequate. We got one bath towel and one hand towel per person. There was an individually controlled air conditioner in each room. There was an individual water heater in each bathroom. There is also a small bank of lockers for guest use.
The staff was very helpful. You get a free map and they explain where some of the attractions are. (We didn't really like their suggestions for food). They scheduled our day trip to Mutianyu Great Wall; however, we paid 280 RMB and I think others on the same tour paid 250 RMB per person. They mailed post cards. Generally, they were nice and always greated us when we came in.
The courtyard hostel provided a limited menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner which was affordably priced and tasted great. I really liked the noodles for breakfast. They have bottled water, beer and chocolate bars all for purchase.
