Xu Xiang Zhai is in a historic location near the Temple to Confucius (Guozijian) and the Lama Temple (Yonghegong), both well worth visiting. The lunch buffet (open until 2pm) offers great variety and quantity of conventional-seeming Chinese food, for a very reasonable price. The restaurant is elegant and clean and the service is good. Best of all, you can take red-meat eating friends along and tell them afterwards that they're been eating flavoured bean curd. They may not believe you!

Its a buffet (but there is an a la carte section as well), quite cheap but food is of good quality and the variety is huge! Frequented by monks its worth a visit given its proximity to the Lama temple. I would say more lunch then dinner.

Based on what we read on TripAdvisor, we made a point of trying out this vegetarian restuarant whilst on our visit to Beijing and having noted that it is near the Lama Temple.
The food was out this world and was worth the half hour wait for a table. There were six of us for lunch and we ate to our heart's content. The dishes were absolutely scrumptious and the spread was so wide that we simply couldnt eat any more. Impressive was that the buffet was consistently being added with new styles of dishes, freshly cooked.
Except for two in our group, we are not vegetarians. The buffet was certainly an eye-opener to a healthy and what I'd refer to as an Imperial spread which we thoroughly enjoyed and would certainly return to when we visit Beijing again. Fully recommendable.

We spotted this just walking past and were sold by the idea of being able to see the food we'd eat rather than try to decipher a menu and hope for the best! We did have to wait for about half an hour but we were happy to do so.
There was a great variety of food to choose from and everything i ate was delicious.
The only let down is the limited cold drinks which didn't include water.

Near the Lama Temple, the Xu Xiang Zhai restaurant offers a diverse vegetarian buffet which is popular with the locals and the monks. The food is freshly prepared and very tasty. The vegetarian sushi is delicious, but beware of the wasabi - it's eye-watering!
