“Noisy Beach hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2013

Jaded hotel that has seen better days. Very loud music from pool side all day long and from the evening entertainment until long after 10pm. The manager seemed to be unable to do anything about it despite complaints from many a guest. Loud parties on the grounds contributed to the nuisance. It was a trying experience especially because we had two kids under 5 yes. The food is fine. Great beach front location with easy access to town, airport and other areas in Mombasa. The hotel has seen better days with many areas requiring repair. 14inch CRT TVs in some rooms. Would fork out more money to stay at the neighbouring bahari beach or voyager hotels

Great hotel, the only compliant was the wifi only worked half the time. The casino was great. The pool area was every nice. The beach needs to be looked after better. There is a cute salon in the hotel with great staff.

Room Tip: Very nice hotel don't count on the wifi.

I spent 4 nights here in March 2012 as part of a group booking. The hotel staff couldn't do enough for us. We had fun around a good size pool, enjoyed body treatments and ate and slept well. The on-site taxi service was a good way to get around independently.
We were very excited and impressed to see the Prime Minister of Kenya leaving the dining room after a special even, on our third day.
Yes, the restaurant staff are very busy but this didn't affect our overall experience and given the hotels location beside the sea and the high humidity, it shouldn't be a surprise to notice some wear to the fabric of the building.
As we visited outside the main season the beach bar was just the place to enjoy an evening without disturbing others. During the day access to the beach is very easy and I would recommend checking out the traders immediately outside the hotel. I will definitely return.

Room Tip: All rooms have sea-views. Some rooms have direct access to a lawn area, so ask for a ground floor...

I spent 3 days in the hotel, the staff were very helpful. Stayed in one of the VIP lounges. The rooms were very clean, air conditioned and hot water was available all day long.
The meals were well prepared and staff were willing to go an extra mile to provide special meals for my baby. It was

The Hotel needs a lot of improvement and renovations. For the price they charge I expected more quality service than I received.

While some of the staff were good others especially in the restaurant looked overwhelmed and tired. The outdoor areas also need some sprucing up.

Room Tip: Rooms on the East side are closer to the Ocean and so more better breeze but A/C noise in some rooms...

We went to Mombasa Beach Hotel in June 2011 as part of our honeymoon - I had been working elsewhere in Africa and my wife came to meet me in Kenya. After an amazing safari experience, we came to Mombasa for some beach time. We had a terrible couple of days at Mombasa Beach Hotel and we left early, losing all of our money (the hotel didn't entertain any notion of refunding our money) and going to Serena Beach (which was very nice).

Specific complaints? 1. The water was dirty (red), there was no hot water. Worse than this though, was the fact that the staff kept telling us that it wasn't dirty and that the hot water would come on if we ran it long enough. We brought the manager with us to the room and ran the water for minutes on end, with no hot water coming, and eventually got a shrug.

2. The meals were tasteless. We had had excellent food elsewhere in Kenya and on safari, so it was a real letdown to eat at MBH. There was no problem with freshness or quantity, the food was just bland, and prepared without much care.

3. Overall, the staff just seemed totally indifferent. Other reviews have mentioned that they seemed demotivated. Indifferent would be the word I would use. At one point, after we'd complained about the water a few times, we were woken up at 5am by security staff - presumably it was a wakeup call intended for someone else who was probably going on an early safari. But that is the kind of thing staff should be sure about before waking somebody up at 5am. There was no explanation about this and no interest from anyone to apologize, etc.

We had booked through a package tour, so we spent the third day calling around to see where there were vacancies in Mombasa. We then booked Serena Beach ourselves and when we got there, it was like heaven - not least because of where we were coming from.

If you're just looking for a base from which to do business, this place is probably reasonable. If you are on vacation, this is not recommended.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights. It is a typical government style hotel that was probably much nicer some 20 or 30 years ago. The hotel is located in a very nice and plush part of Mombasa and you will be close to a number of nice restaurants and shopping centers. However, the rooms are old and need renovation. The beach is nice but very crowded. The food is average. Night entertainment was quite good and we really enjoyed the night shows that were different every night. I hope they can change the government hotel mentality that is still there and make changes in their food menu. I paid a little more and change my room to the top floor that gave me a larger room with a beautiful view of the beach and the hotel compound that is quite expansive. I also liked the size of the room, the working air conditioner and the nice balcony. In general I enjoyed my time here, but could have been much more enjoyable if we had better food and renovated rooms.

Room Tip: Try to request a room in the top floor with a good view of the beach.
