In general the hotel needs some major refurbishment to keep pace with some of the competitors on the cost. “Look-and-feel” is quite old-fashioned (1980 or so). For example the gym, we visited today has equipment, which should go straight to the museum. Likewise the furniture in the room, the restaurant and the installations are quite old.

Staff is friendly and the food is average, however overall the value for money does not meet the expectations.

Gallinsky, Director of Sales at Reef Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded August 20, 2012

We are very sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations.

The Reef Hotel is proud to stand up for its classic furniture values that relate to older traditions of furniture designs, when 100% of furniture was made of wood, usually hand made,. Many of the modern designs one sees now are plastic moldings that are look alike bamboo or wood, not the real thing. This may be modern, but its not what we like and many of our customers vote with their wallet to stay with us due to our niche decision not to get too modern.

You were offered a room in a sea side block of 15 rooms that are not yet converted, but amply spacious with direct sea views, and verandas in the gardens. After you complained about your room you opted not to change rooms so unfortunately you did not get to experience the new style we are developing.

The hotel has an outdoor feel with thatch roofs, swim up pool bars, a large garden with sun beds, a sea side dining room with ample seating and wonderful views and breeze over the Indian ocean. For most holiday makers, this is what it is all about, the real thing.

We do agree the gym is old, yet we wil confirm we have both a new modern gym about to be installed, and our spa is also getting significant new facilities during the last months on 2012.

It's our priority to take care of guests properly and fulfil our guest expectations.
We will continue to improve our services and facilities to make our guests feel welcome.
We hope to may welcome you back among us to positively surprise you.

Kind regards

This hotel is situated securely behind walls right on the edge of the Indian Ocean with steps down to the white sand beach. On arrival the wide open pleasant reception is welcoming especially the attentiveness of the porters and receptionists - thank you Trevor, Victor and Patience and the many others to numerous to mention!

Our deluxe rooms overlooking the ocean were quiet and tranquil and pleasantly furnished with good sized balconies that got the rising sun for a good part of the morning. WiFi connection is strong in the bedrooms but I always have a gripe with hotels that charge in this technological age for this facility albeit that the Reef is only 2000KES for a week.

We spent five wonderful nights in this hotel on a half board basis and the breakfasts were really good and the dinners provided a good selection of main courses but an unimaginative range of starters. The waiters and waiteresses were warm, friendly and always eager to help and assist.

Our stay was made more pleasant by Paul, the entertainment guru who organised the volley ball in the pool and other games and fancied himself as the table tennis champion only to lose to my 20 year old son! It was all good fun.

This hotel is an ideal spot for a quiet relaxing holiday and we truly can find nothing negative to report.

Room Tip: We had paid a small amount extra for deluxe seaview rooms and these are on the third floor (there ar...

we have just come back from a week at the Reef..we decided to come back without the children to get some sun..before we left i had a quick look at some recent reviews and i was surprised at the tone of one as we have got to know many of the staff aend i cant think of anywhere in the world(well maybe Thailand) where the staff will genuinely try so hard to please you and not make it obvious they expecta tip at each point.Another thing is we always book directly with the hotel, they usually have specials.we stayed in the sea side rooms again which are by far the best even if they cost a bit more..
one of the best keptsecrets of the Reef is that it has one of those wonderful old fashioned proper rectangular pools where you can swim lengths. It is next to the big landscaed pool which is great for lazing in and doing the unmissable water aerobics!!!!
we were not inclusive this time which was great as we had freedom to chose from whatever we wanted..and we must congratualte the Reef on moving all the dining to the cliff side..the restaurant is large airey and with compelling views of the beach..cooler and really an exotic relocation...
We still love coming back to mombasa, wether it is own our own or with our children.and we love the staff. at the Reef.....great tip for travellers ,get an IPAD you can get and read tripadvisor much quicker now!!

Room Tip: ask for the new garden rooms on the sea facing side

Spent 12 days in March this was not our first choice of hotel was moved hear buy Cosmos through no fault by us but hey ho thats another story.
At first the place looks very nice but if you look closer it looks tired and a bit scruffy.when we found out we where getting moved to this hotel i mailed the requested if they would upgrade us to a renovated sea view room they informed it would be a extra £150 for the 12 days we said ok also mailed them could we have a fridge as this was stated in there room info but this is now been removed you now have to pay extra but they we could have it free.
when we arrived at reception we checked in we where then showed to our room well thats when things started to go wrong it was the most scruffy thing i had ever seem it also smelled we just looked at each other i said no way i am staying hear looked out of the window which also was dirty all you see is a view of a pool which had no sunbeds or chairs mind the pool looked ok and the gardens where nice we told the porter this was not the room we paid for he then said yes it was we then asked to see the manager he then called the front desk they insisted this was our room by this time i was getting mad so we went back down to front desk showed them the mail confirming we had a booked a room with a sea view after much debate and some choice words they said they new nothing about the change of room FAULT 1 no communication .I asked about the fridge showed them our mail she said she would contact housekeeping to put one in the room so of we went to our new room hopeing this was going to be ok this is where the disappointment started the room for just been renovated in 2011 it was pretty poor to start with the tiles on the floor had so chips they started to form a pattern we did have a new tv but you could not get any channels so it was no use there was a battered couple of small tables and dressing table with a mirror with 2 drawers these are the only ones in the room the wardrobe is a rail with a few hangers a a very tatty curtain for a door this is where the safe was you have to extra if you want to use it we did the bed was ok with nice clean sheets but only 2 pillows the net could have been a bit cleaner over all the room was clean the bathroom is ok the towles where a bit rough you also have a kettle for tea&coffee but there is no milk for tea some days the stall at bar would give me some till one day one waitress took the hump and said this was only for AI customers and i was not getting any so i said stuff it there is A/C worked ok but in it is in the wrong place the is also a big fan on the wall this was much better than the A/C so we paid £150 for a view of the sea and some palm trees nice if they are going to renovate any more rooms they should check the workmanship before they pay .now to FAULT 2 the food is a bit hit and miss we where half board breakfast was ok it was at night it was sometimes to cold i don't think it was all there fault some people would not close the lid so the food got cold some nights the food was under cooked raw chicken is not good the meat was a bit tough some nights if you came in late there was no food left
we also used the grill sometimes but you waited anything up to 30 min for some food and the menu was limited but the food was ok.
The pool is great though nice and big and clean the staff all work hard to keep the place clean&tidy the only i did not like was the bed game i am a early riser so i would be up early so instead of laying in bed i would get up and go down to the garden get a couple of beds and read my book and wait till hubby got up and go for breakfast thats when you see the bed game some of ground and pool staff putting towels on beds for people that have paid them to do so one morning one very nasty man was shouting in my face that i had pinched his bed i told him to take a run up jump but it was because i had got there first before any the staff could put towels on beds when they found out i was not going to play the game they left me alone there was no more good morning can i get you a bed it was not just the sunbeds some of the staff in the resturant did it as well with tables .ths shows they put on at night are good we did enjoy them
all in all we made the best of it we did enjoy KENYA the safari was the best see review on the Ashnil Aruba and would go back to Kenya but not to the Reef
bye the way did we get the fridge NO after asking for about 3 days and getting the run around by front desk staff we gave up FAULT 3

Room Tip: sea views are but not worth the extra

Reef was run down at some point but some renovation work has been done with new AC system and fresh painting, good TV sets and balcony at least in the middle section of the hotel. The far right rooms meant to be state of art still require renovation. the bathrooms flood at times, electricity erratic and bathtubs, lines in the showers, and fridges are very ancient.

There is however good food, and music by DJ Thompson.

Room Tip: Rooms in the immediate right hand side after the reception are much better , have ocean view but lac...
