“Super interesting again and again”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

Do not be fuled by hotels trying to sell you a tour to Mombasa! Take a matatu and explore it on your own. Mombasa is reasonably safe during the day (in one month we had no problems, people are nice... Take a simple map of mombasa and go along Digo or Moi avenues, Old town. Mama road from Jesus to Ferries... Just loose yourselve and enyoy. Plenty possibilities to take a drink (insist on closed botles/cans, but with a food I would be more careful. The center (market) is dirty, busy and noisi, bot other parts you might enjoy more. If you can take something for the wery por people on the street (shildren stuf, something old people might need, also hotel shampoo and lotion bottles, coffee, tee, soap...)

“Scary but amazing”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

As a white female, walking alone, during Ramadan, in a crowded Muslim town, I felt scared on occasion. It was probably misplaced but probably equally ill-advised to wander aimlessly alone.

But the sites and the smells and the sounds!! Spices, vegetables, women sorting beans in baskets, pumpkins cleaved in their orange glory, boys selling lengths of telephone cable (?), coffee, teas, warm coca cola, crowded streets and isolated lane ways, busy thoroughfares and rocky cliff top paths.

The buildings are for the most part run-down and ruined, but there are some diamonds in the rough with fretted balconies and beautiful arabic details. Enormous carved doorways to overgrown plots, beautifully painted murals on random street walls, glimpses of the indian ocean through narrow alleyways.

“Fun to see”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

Was fun to see, but nothing special. You feel kinda lonely as a white person. There are to much shops to buy souvenirs and I didn't feel really safe back there. Still it was something that I wouldn't have wanted to miss.
