Voyager Beach Resort
Ranked #2 of 60 Hotels in Mombasa
Reviewed November 26, 2007

We arrived in Mombasa with reserved views, but after getting to The Voyager Beach Resort complex all of speculation had evaded us. The resort is based on a Cruise liner theme and the 'port' in which you dock every day is different. The menu is to where you are docked. ALL the staff are excellant and nothing is too much trouble for them would recommend a visit to such a great place. Smugglers Cove Restaurant is superb. Myself and Carolyn booked a safari trip to Tsavo East and West with Mustafa David on the beach and we got a better deal than Thomson could offer and he will arrange to take you when you want to go. We will definately be going back to Kenya and too The Voyager Beach Resort. If you are the generous kind take your old clothes with you and plenty off pens because as this is a 3rd world country these item are very needed......

Only back a week from Kenya, seems like ages tho!
Voyager hotel is very nice, I won`t bore you with repeating comments from other users as most of it is true about the people, food, beach boys etc.

However my personal first impression of the Hotel was that it looked as if it needed a coat of paint - the rusting metal on our sea view balcony serving to underline the general "tired" look of the decor. Not a disaster, but first impressions do count!

We had a basic room, as we don`t tend to spend any time in hotel rooms other than to store our clothes, sleep and get clean in, and to that end it did the job very well, the sea view was accidental but welcome, the monkeys visiting the balcony great fun and the room housekeeping faultless. I agree with the comments on the roomsafe con, a daily rate is a rip off for such an essential item. We found the bottled water provided adequate for coffee making (kettle + brew kit provided free) and tooth brushing, safe water is freely available around the hotel bars and at the fun pool for free, so was never a problem. Table service is generally quite slow, but that is the Kenyan way, you just go with the flow.

There is an excellent dive centre at the hotel, but the diving is very tide/weather dependant, so not all sites are offered every week. The dania wreck is a great dive, but the reef diving can get a bit "samey" if you are a more experienced diver. Shark Point, Pinnacles and Birthday reef being the top local spots if the weather is behaving. Diving is done from purpose built dive boats, and groups numbers are kept to a minimum where possible. We were diving with as little as four divers on board - luxury if you are used to diving in the Red sea!
Cheers Bruce, wife is still bangin on about the Pinnacles!

stevebaillie.co.uk
for some pics of the dive sites if your interested.

You do feel a little tied to the hotel after a while as Mombasa isn`t that great a place for night life and can be a little dangerous if you don`t know what you are doing but there is a great Japanese restaurant near the Nacumaat Supermarket and the Tamarind restaurant dhow is worth the money. Don`t go through the rep, get reception to book for you and just get a taxi driver to take you and pick you up again (agree a price around 1000 ks and pay when you have returned to the hotel.)

Ok Safari time.....Thought long and hard about this and read a lot of comments on this forum about the subject. I basically fired off a load of emails to all the diffrent companies for prices.

I eventually used JT Safaris (just google it!), who are based further down the coast from the Voyager and not to be found on the beach which seems to have been monopolised by two operators who guard their pitch!, The company has a very good reputation. The owner Julius Nzumbi(not to be confused with a Julius who is one of the beach operators mentioned) organised a brilliant trip for us, and did everything he could to make sure there were no hitches. I paid £100 deposit before we left and then the balance when we got to the hotel. I can`t fault the service he provided. If you read this Julius thanks again, and for the carvings!

You will definately save upwards of £100 per person by not booking with the holiday rep. However you have paid for the Hotel for the days you are away, so its swings and roundabouts price wise. You only have to book out of yor room if you have pre booked the Safari and not paid for the room for the period you are away. You do not have to book out otherwise, only leave the key with reception.

Check what is provided, and the level of service. The holiday rep option was a MINIMUM of 4 people per vehicle and seemed to only offer the more commercial lodges. If you know what you want you can organise anything with the beach guys and haggle a price so this can sometimes be a better option.

By booking privately, we had a vehicle and driver to ourselves. At mealtimes Julius had reserved tables at the lodges, which ensured that while others were sitting down hours early to ensure a table with views over the plains, or at Ngulia Lodge for instance where there is a baited platform which attracts leopard and hyena and competition for seats is fierce, but we were able to relax and take our own time. What a show by the way! This was a nice touch not provided by many other firms as far as I could see.

We could also say where we wanted to go and how long we stayed watching animals at a location, and while many of the tours make a mandatory stop at a Masai Tourist Fleecing Station or village as the tour operators prefer to call it. we didn`t have to, and so used the time for another half day game driving.
Whatever method you use, you HAVE to do a Safari!! And I can heartily recommend JT Safaris.

Top tip for the airport is to download the visa application form and have it in your hand filled out in advance for when you land in Mombasa. Saves a bit of hassle at immigration. Otherwise prepare for a lot of needless red tape and security checks.

This was a fantastic trip, the Hotel does try to be something it is not I think it is sold as a 4 star but is more like 3 compared to other 4 star hotels I have stayed, but it is still one of the best options for this part of the coast. You certainly won`t be dissapointed!
Hope this helps someone.

This was our first trip to Africa and we were unsure what to expect. The whole family (2 adults and 2 teenagers) were of the same opinion, the hotel was the best we have stayed in for service and the staff were tremendously helpful and friendly. We thought the cruise ship theme would be a bit cheesy but it didn't turn out that way. The food was buffet style but there was plenty of variety and I would recommend the vegetarian curries. All in all it was a perfect place to relax after being on safari. We do not normally go back to the same place twice as there are plenty of new places to see but I would make an exception for this hotel.

Our first time in Kenya, it was a real experience not just a holiday. We returned from the voyager a week ago and we would certainly go back

We spent our honeymoon in a beautiful beach location looking onto the Indian Ocean we loved the Voyager. The people that worked at the Voyager were so friendly, they work so hard. We made friends with quite a few of the staff there, in particular George one of the waiters in the lounge bar, he looked after us and was entertaining.

The Voyager was very relaxing and a little sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in England.( This became more apparent when we landed back in England so really make the most of your stay).

The food was good at the main dining area different themes everday according to where the voyager docked in. There is also a good little snack bar by the side of one of the pools if you dont fancy the main restaurant. The fish restaurant Smugglers Cove is very good not all inclusive but 50% off, very romantic with a lovely waterfall.

We had no trouble getting sunbeds, and spent most of our time at the infinity pool which had a fantastic view of the Indian Ocean. We had these gorgeous Baileys Coffees at the pool (not all inclusive but gorgeous).

There was lots happening on the beach locals fishing, and boat trips, beach boys wanting you to buy their carvings etc ( they can be persistent just go with it or say no thank you) this made it more interesting and colourful. We booked a 3 day Safari with Steve on the beach, we were very happy with the price we paid, just compare it with what you could book at the hotel It was brilliant we went to Tsavo East and West and saw the big five. Our Safari guide was called Ramba Samba we called him Rambo, he was the best Guide there he was proffesional and didn't let the other Safari vehicles get in his way! he was the Man. My husband absolutely loved the Game drives and was in his element driving at speed through the Sarengeti trying to spot wildlife. We went on Safari five days into our holiday it was good to get back to relaxing and making the most of the rest of the beach holiday, Safari can make you tired. The journey to Safari took you along China Road the main Mombasa Nairobi highway, along here you get an idea of the way alot of the people live in Kenya . They appreciate anything, we gave children pencils and pads, socks, football shirts, they have nothing.

The only thing that was annoying was 1. you have to pay daily for
the safe in your room. 2 The sports bar is not all inclusive, people were just getting their drinks from another pool bar and bringing them in so it seems pointless. 3. They don't provide enough bottled water for your room. So you can buy it from a little shop within the hotel, or fill up bottles at the sports pool.
Hey not much to complain about.

We had a brilliant time and look back on our stay at the Voyager with wonderful memories of a fantastic holiday and honeymoon.

Our love to Anne and Geoff who we went on Safari with.

We had our honeymoon at the Voyager and loved it - we stayed in a superior sea view room that was great kept extremely clean every day-fresh towels everyday if you wanted. Your cabin attendant comes round early evening to turn your sheets down and pull your mosquito net round (not that we got bothered by mosquitos at all). Never been to an all inclusive before and was pleasantly surprised food was lovely and loads of choice obviously after 2 weeks things start to repeat a little but hey what do you expect - the staff are fantastic and really make the hotel what it is - they are always smiley and friendly just makes such a change - pools are lovely especially the infinity pool where we spent most of our time but its nice to have the choice. The animation team are great they do not bother you and are quite happy to let you just lie there and watch everyone chucking themselves about - people moan about the beach boys but we thought they were fine we went for a few walks on the beach and they didn't bother us as long as you acknowledge them and just say a polite no thank you we found that did the trick. Did a safari and had a fantastic time - booked it all when we got there and so glad we did after hearing what other people said they had spent on pre-booking it - we booked it with the beach boys we used Bruno(Red baseball cap) & Julius(Yellow baseball cap) they were - brilliant did 3 days in the masaai mara at Olare Safari Camp and had just the best time-absolutely amazing-our driver francis a real life masaai warrior and our guide boston was brilliant we just had the best time ever and everything we could have possibly wanted from our honeymoon. Julius's e-mail address is [--] if you want to enquire with him about a safari. You have to remember that kenya is a third world country and so different to england but is an amazing place and definitely one to be experienced step outside the comfort zone of your hotel and explore some of it the sights are amazing.

The Voyager Hotel was Fantastic!! There was absolutely no problem with it at all!!
The Hotel has different shows on every night by the Animation team ( the animation team is for the kids club)
the Food is excellent. You get different choices every night eg:Spain,Auastralia, italy etc
Also they had different Resturaunts they had :the main resturaunt, italian and the seafood
They had two pools, they had the Fun pool which had a slide, the sports pool which was for excersing and the infinity pool which was for adults only.
They also had a gym, massage parlour and a hair salon.
The rooms were lovely, they had air conditioning and a fan on the roof.
The staff were so friendly everytime you saw a member of staff the said Jambo (which means Hello)
If you are all inclusive then you dont need to pay for your food and drinks. But in the seafood resturaunt and you are all inclusive then you will get everything half price.
I will definatley go back again!!!!

We stayed at the Voyager in August 2007. We had a fantastic time. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel most welcome. We had a superior sea facing room, and it was lovely waking up in the morning, having a coffee and looking over the beach and out to sea. The room was nice and was cleaned daily. The food was very good, plenty of choice. We mainly sunbathed at the infinity pool, nice and peacful, you just had to put your red flag up if you wanted a drink, which was blissful.

Iam not going to keep repeating all the good things that people are saying about the voyager, I can only confirm that they are all true.
We really did have the most brill holiday, and it met all my expectations, you will not regret going there. There is so much to see in Kenya.

I only have a few of gripes. The exchange rate at the hotel was extortionate. I changed one hundred pounds and only got eighty six back, which I thought was such a rip off. To get to a bank I would have had to use a taxi, and they were expensive. I would recomend changing money at the airport.

The staff at the snack bar didn't seem very interested in serving you, and you were often kept waiting for drinks and food. The staff everywhere else were very good and were always happy to help.
