“good, filling meals at a bustling swahili canteen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

Calibrate your expectations: this is a canteen that serves local food for locals.

Strategic location right on the edge of the old town in Mombasa, it's a convenient place for a rest and a meal during a day visit to Mombasa. The clientele is locals (all ages) and tourists trusting their LP guide.

Extensive swahili menu (shwarmas, pilau, fish, fresh juices, naan cooked in what looks like a reclaimed oil drum) served at long tables (share with strangers, make friends). You will need to fight for the attention of the waiters, and probably need to follow up a few times, especially during peak hours. Very good food and very good value.

No alcohol.

“Great chicken Shawarma and Nann”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

If your in town and looking for a quick lunch or even a nice dinner then Tarboush is right for you. They are located down the street from the post office in town and have a nice menu of middle eastern cuisine. They also have fresh juices you can enjoy outside in their street side dining area where they cook the nann in big kettle containers and shawara rotates or inside the restaurant. Service is usually fast and friendly....Enjoy

“Delicious Food, poor service.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

I have been going there since i was in high school and well the last few times i have been there this year have been a nightmare. The staff are rude and you cant get a receipt unless you memorize who served you ie know the waiters name for instance. I was like really? I guess ill walk out then. The head of service guys are awesome but the lower end staff are rude and not even informative. I.E apparently on Fridays there is timing when the restaurant is "closed" but remains open for the guests who want to wait to do so. We sat there and saw the waiters chatting and people just sitting and chilling and i went over to ask what was the hold up, with a dirty look he said we are closed. I told him well you could have atleast come and told us. Its not like we live around town to know this. I come a long way for their food. I stopped and only go there when i am in town for something else. Nothing i hate more than crappy service.

If you can overlook the service, great coz the food is always amazing. Oh and i think the "mshikaki" which is like only 10 small pieces doesnt deserve to be 260 bob. Ridiculous pricing.

“Local Café with Great Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

This is a really local café in the town centre offering lots of local dishes.

Whenever I go I have the shawarmas. They are brilliant and made fresh in front of you. The biriyani here is also fantastic.

If you're ever in the town centre, make sure you go for a lovely local snack. Bear in mind, there is nothing fancy here. Just down home good local food.
