If you travel through Nairobi, stop instead at the Masai Mara market where things a fraction of the price here.

If you can't, don't worry they accept MasterCard here.

Excellent wood carvings - see their web site for pictures. You can also visit the carvers village and meet the men producing these wooden beauties. Located 4 km from city center direction the airport, take Matatu from GPO (general post office), 30 ksh.

The place is on the way to the airport, with lots of traffic jams to get there. But it is worth a visit.
It employs around 3000 people, mostly sculptress who make all the animals, masks, statues etc you see everywhere else in Kenya (and in the world). You can visit the camp and see them at work in very so-so conditions. Each "artist" has its number, and if you like one, you can get its work in the shop (an amazing warehouse with everything you wish for).
Prices are fixed (no bargain), it can be a bit more expensive than in other places, but the quality is guaranteed, and ebony ... is ebony.
You can pay with your credit card. They pack it for you well. I bought very fragile fine statues of masai, which arrived safely.

Wherever you go in Mombasa (and elsewhere in Kenya) you will find people selling key-rings name-plates and carvings. Although some of it is made in places such as Bombolulu, most of it is made here.

Akamba really miss a trick by not having pictures of this place displayed wherever the goods are sold as it would really highlight the VALUE of what these craftsmen do.

A wonderful place to visit for a couple of hours. Extremely friendly craftsmen who are more than happy to show you what they do and how. You can't buy directly from the men, only from the shop at the entrance/exit where every item is marked with a price and "maker". The men get a commission from everything sold with their number on it. Prices are fixed.

Why let the middle-men take a slice (and typically at well over-inflated prices) when you can buy direct from the people who made it.

A hidden gem :)
