this place certainly has the wow factor spent five great days there while escaping our hotel... what can i say great location, great food at a reasonable price slow, but who cares when you have a tusker in hand and a beautiful view of the Indian ocean with a fabulous atmosphere to boot.... the working girls yes they are there but they are just making a living and they are friendly enough to visitors and in no way pester or make you feel unsafe, i guess its just down to how you personally judge people to me they were friendly and polite so live and let live! go and try I am sure you will have a wonderful time :)

This place would have been great but since its not private, the working girls are all about. Two girls kept staring at my husband and making him uncomfortable, and then we had lots of beacj boys telling me to help them get money from my husband and when i told them off, they called me all sorts of names...it was just packed with the wrong people..would never go there again...you feel so unsafe to even go to the toilet incase the girls or the beach boys will mugg you...eyes on you all the time, cant even swallow a drink without eyes on you.

I hadn't been to Big Tree for some time, not since the son of the late owner started to transform the place. The whole place has been smartened up and he's done a lot of work, the scruffy area fronting the beach that had a couple of concrete platforms with makuti shades and old furniture has all been remodelled. The old unattractive barbed wire fence has been replaced with a low wall, with a wide table type top, making it and excellent vantage point for the public beach and in the distance the tourist beach. The whole area between the original main bar restaurant area and the beach has been floored and the whole place in and out has been fitted with new matching furniture, another large makuti roofed area has been built on to the original where there is a dance floor and raised viewing areas. Big Tree is now a recognised music venue, especially at weekends and has hosted international acts recently.

But to the food, in the past I've enjoyed inexpensive pizza, fresh made pasta, and piri piri prawns there, and when I've wanted something very light a salad, but this time I went for the Beef Stew (580/-)and Wor Lass went for the pepper steak (690/-). They were both excellent, the stew was a good portion of freshly cooked pieces of tender beef with chunks of al dente capsicum in a slightly spice sauce (paprika?). The steak was cooked exactly as Wor Lass asked for it to be and was also a good piece of tender meat.

The service has always been 'African paced', on this occasion the waiting staff were quick to approach us and were attentive, but the kitchen was very slow, we waited for the best part of an hour, in which time we only say around 8 dishes emerge from the kitchen, so the kitchen wasn't exactly under pressure. Having said that the stew did look and taste as though it had been freshly cooked rather than warmed up

A word of warning for those who may be offended. Big Tree has long been a meeting place for expat men, mostly Italian as it is Italian owned and managed, consequently there are always a number of working girls around trying to attract their attention, and that of any other men who are not with females. They will not approach couples.

Everyone will like this place for something. If it isn't the great view to the ocean or the delicious food, it will be the good company or the beatiful cottages. This place is without a doubt the main attraction on the Mombasa north coast ( Bamburi beach ). Just remember your food and beverages arrives in African time, so just order the food before you go swimming, then you get exactly the right experience here, because the food really is good.

Big Tree has a great spot on the beach. An open layout gives a good view of the water and of the people passing to and fro along the beach. You can get there from the beach, or via a winding laneway off Malindi Rd - it is well signposted and there is parking available - all the taxi drivers will know the place too.
Unfortunately, while there seemed to be plenty of staff around the place, they are more interested in talking and reading the paper than service. And when I finally got their attention, it took them 25 minutes to cook a simple cheeseburger. Just not good enough.
Having said that, the food was pretty good and the drinks were reasonably priced. So a good place, but the staff are just a bit too relaxed.
