We have visited many times over the years, but the amount of research carried out by the authorities into why the inhabitants abandoned the area remains negligible. We would like to know more.

The grounds are well maintained and clean. The monsoon restaurant is great, The entry fee of 500 KSH seemed a little too high for what was on offer. Only go there if you are going to the restaurant otherwise it is not worth the trip through the bumpy access road.

To reach Jumba la Mtwana was an epic adventure since no sign posts, indications or advertisements are existing all the way from Mombasa and the last 2 miles or so of dirt road was almost impassable due to poor maintenance, but finally we reach the Site. The guided tour was fast, didn’t take more than half an hour, since the Site is quite small but the ancient Ruins remains and history are interesting, the old magnificent baobab astonishing and the place mysterious and fascinating. The Ruins are by the Ocean, a relaxing place that deserves a visit.

When looking for the ruins of Jumba la Mtwana, we had a bit of trouble finding the place. When you know where to look, it is rather easy. Coming from Mombasa, you pass Mwtapa and at the end of the town, you turn right after which you simply follow the bumpy road.
Then you arrive at the gate and you should expect the warders to be happy seeing visitors; wrong thought! Enthusiasm seems a dirty word. A bit of palavering and we
can buy tickets. Do we need a guide? Being mean people, we of course need a guide. And so the tour around the ruins starts.
Jumba la Mwtana is not a large domain so the tour does not need to take long. Besides some standing walls and a few formidable baobab trees, Jumba has not that much to offer. There is a lovely sea view though. And thanks to these pages, I now learned the place is of some importance for the preservation of sea turtles. Not a word about that from our guide.
The museum is as expected. Small but with a few interesting Swahili relics.
After the tour, I was asked to write something in the old, or should I say ancient, notebook that serves as a guest book. As I really enjoyed the tour, my comment was positive. The book made it clear that Jumba la Mwtana is not drawing a lot of visitors.
We visited in October 2010; the most recent entry was made in February 2010 by a woman from England.
