“A Truly Special Retreat”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Tijara in Jun 2013 for two nights. Tijara is owned by a lovely family that lives on the property, who provided us with a warm welcome and ensured that we were comfortable throughout our stay. They are very flexible and easygoing hosts.

They accompanied us on a walk out to a reef during low tide, where there is some excellent snorkelling. Snorkelling gear, shoes and a very useful walking stick were provided to us. There are lots of sea urchins on the walk so you have to go slow and carefully, but we managed without any incident. The hosts, Ian and Larissa are extremely knowledgable about the marine life and told us some fascinating facts about the various creatures that inhabit the reef.

The property is visually stunning, secluded and unpretentiously luxurious. If you are looking for a special place, Tijara will not disappoint.

The property is located in a somewhat remote area and is nestled on a cliff that overlooks the ocean. The cabin is spacious, with a large balcony and tasteful decorations. The roof has two skylights keeping the room bright, and the roof is raised so that it is semi-open, so that you almost feel like you are sleeping in nature - yet with the full comfort of a room.

It's hard to find a reason to leave the cabin! There are only 4 cabins on 6-7 acres of land, and you really feel completely alone, in your own little paradise.

The owners provide a cell phone so that you can call staff or the hosts if you need anything. Wireless internet signal didn't reach our room, which was actually a blessing in disguise as there really was no need for it. However, the hosts offered to let us sit on their balcony where the signal is strong.

The only issue we had was being startled out of sleep by loud and bizarre sounds of bushbabies on our first night. However, once we got used to it we didn't really notice the sounds.

Food is served at the main dining area, and is a set menu that can be tailored as per your request and is phenomenal and can also be served in your room if you request.

We cannot say there was anything amiss with our time at Tijara, and will be recommending it to friends and family. Definitely not the place for people looking for boisterous nightlife or other activities. However, if you are looking for a peaceful place to unwind and marvel at the spectacular coast of Kenya, this is definitely the place!

Dear Ujala,
Thank you for such a fantastic and detailed review and we are so happy that you enjoyed staying with us! We will certainly look forward to your coming back for more relaxation, reef exploration and general escape from it all.
We kept some extra land outside Tijara as bush and it is home to lots of birds and animals, bush babies included! They really chose Tijara as their home ground and even though they can be noisy at times, they are a fantastic addition to our "family", they are really cute and funny. Over the time our guests have seen dik diks, bushbucks, wild pigs, white tailed mongoose, civet amongst other animals coming to Tijara. Add numerous species of birds, our resident monitor lizards and all the marine life we have in our lagoon, and one can have a mini safari without going anywhere!
Once again thank you for your wonderful review and see you soon!

I can not wait to get back to Tijara!

Personal paradise with the the most beautiful rooms! I was a little worried that we were taking our children to a boutique location, but Ian and Larissa went that extra mile to make our trip special!

We had originally booked for 4 nights, but extended for 7! Ian was kind enough to take us goggling in the most beautiful caves, we took a walk through the most incredible bat cave, the private beach was just perfect to watch the children and give us time to relax. It is not often that I get a chance to read all the books I want too, but I certainly managed this trip!

The food was excellent, it is hard to believe that such delicious dishes can be created so far from town! The Chef took such good care of us, even taking the time to make sure the kids enjoyed some coastal delicacies.

I cannot wait to return with my husband, maybe just the two of us this time (!), and see the new pool and relax in the exquisite rooms.

Thanks to all of you!

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautiful! Secluded and private.

Dear Kealleigh,

Thank you for your wonderful review and it was our pleasure to host you. We are so happy that you extended you stay - this is the best testament to our services and to what Tijara has to offer whether you are a family or a couple on a romantic trip.
We enjoyed hosting your family and will certainly look forward to seeing you here again as a family and as a couple to get away for a few days, we will have some more interesting coastal dishes on offer with our newly designed menu!
We are very lucky to have a wonderful lagoon and we are always happy to share it with our guests who are enthusiastic about snorkeling and reef exploration.
Take care and see you soon, we hope!

We stayed at Tijara Beach for four nights having spent eight days on safari. Having travelled for seven hours in a bumpy 4 x 4 the gates of paradise opened to reveal the most beautiful gardens and delightful cottages , although you could hardly call them cottages as they were very spacious ! Every little detail was special and the view to the sea was breathtaking . Ian and Larissa were wonderful hosts and took us snorkelling on their beach, a great experience. The food was superb and beautifully presented.Frank spoilt us every afternoon with tea and cakes made by Ann by the pool, who could ask for more ! We will be back for sure ,thank you for making the end of our holiday so memorable.

Room Tip: No need to choose a good room they were all beautiful .

Hard to believe you can find a hidden gem like this so close to the hustle and bustle of Mombassa. Hosts Ian and Larissa provided that "home away from home" atmosphere in this beautiful tropical setting. With only 5 cottages there is no shortage of peace and quiet and we thoroughly enjoyed our days snorkelling through the large tidal pool. Food and service was great and the efforts put into the trees and flowers has many exotic birds calling this home. The only downside was we almost didn't make it to Tijara because "trip advisor" search engine showed that it was full! Recommend to call Tijara direct if accommodation states "full" .

Dear Karla,
Thank you so much for your lovely review and we enjoyed hosting you at Tijara. We certainly learnt a few things from you about some plants and we are glad that you, with your professional outlook, particularly enjoyed our gardens and landscape. We are very proud of what we created here and our gardens are home to so many species of beautiful birds and some lovely wildlife, it gives us hours of pleasure.
Also thank you for bringing to our attention the issue of some search engines showing Tijara full when in fact we have availability, and thank you for your advice to travellers to check with us. We really appreciate it. We will look forward to having the pleasure of hosting you here again one day!
With all our best wishes,
Ian & Larissa

Ian and Larissa have created paradise. The scenery changes with the tide to reveal beautiful landscapes for walking and snorkelling, or just watching the fisherman go out. The breezes float through the cottage, and the 'outdoor' bathroom was fun! And when you feel like a coffee or a gin and tonic, just ring for Frank who will bring it to your door with a smile. A very special holiday, not sure we will ever better it. We had such a happy time with you. Thank you. Karen and Andy.

We stayed at Tijara Beach with our friends in September 2012.
And what a wonderful place, a little oasis.
Nothing bad to say! Service, Staff, Food, Cottages, Gardens and Beach all excellent.
And a warm welcome from both Larissa & Ian who could not do enough for us.
Make sure to visit the rock pools, the bats and the Tumaini school.
Also keep a lookout at night for the bush babies!
We look forward to visiting again and would not hesitate to recommend Tijara to our friends.
