My husband and I stayed at Tijara in Jun 2013 for two nights. Tijara is owned by a lovely family that lives on the property, who provided us with a warm welcome and ensured that we were comfortable throughout our stay. They are very flexible and easygoing hosts.
They accompanied us on a walk out to a reef during low tide, where there is some excellent snorkelling. Snorkelling gear, shoes and a very useful walking stick were provided to us. There are lots of sea urchins on the walk so you have to go slow and carefully, but we managed without any incident. The hosts, Ian and Larissa are extremely knowledgable about the marine life and told us some fascinating facts about the various creatures that inhabit the reef.
The property is visually stunning, secluded and unpretentiously luxurious. If you are looking for a special place, Tijara will not disappoint.
The property is located in a somewhat remote area and is nestled on a cliff that overlooks the ocean. The cabin is spacious, with a large balcony and tasteful decorations. The roof has two skylights keeping the room bright, and the roof is raised so that it is semi-open, so that you almost feel like you are sleeping in nature - yet with the full comfort of a room.
It's hard to find a reason to leave the cabin! There are only 4 cabins on 6-7 acres of land, and you really feel completely alone, in your own little paradise.
The owners provide a cell phone so that you can call staff or the hosts if you need anything. Wireless internet signal didn't reach our room, which was actually a blessing in disguise as there really was no need for it. However, the hosts offered to let us sit on their balcony where the signal is strong.
The only issue we had was being startled out of sleep by loud and bizarre sounds of bushbabies on our first night. However, once we got used to it we didn't really notice the sounds.
Food is served at the main dining area, and is a set menu that can be tailored as per your request and is phenomenal and can also be served in your room if you request.
We cannot say there was anything amiss with our time at Tijara, and will be recommending it to friends and family. Definitely not the place for people looking for boisterous nightlife or other activities. However, if you are looking for a peaceful place to unwind and marvel at the spectacular coast of Kenya, this is definitely the place!
