Yes keep reading, i bet your thinking that the reviews are fixed in some way!! The Royal Mara totally blew us away, the location is perfect, the accommodation is just mind blowing, the staff are so friendly and keep you safe at all times, the game drives with Simon were beyond what i had expected. If your serious about wildlife and want to see it all up close and personal book Royal Mara. We flew in from Diani in a small aircraft landing on a dirt track 21/2 hours later (They had to clear giraffe off the track before we couldland!!) We landed and the adventure started when we stepped off the plane!! . We done 4 days which included 2 game drives daily and a bush walk, the game drives were awesome, comfortable 4x4's with loads of space and superb viewing. We stayed in Simba lodge, Mark looked after our every need, Charles and William were also extremly helpfull. We cannot fault this place.... WOW!!!

Words cannot really describe the wonderful experience I and 3 friends had when we visited the Royal Mara Safari Lodge in December '09. The lodge surpassed our expectations and some from the accommodation - which was just as described to the wonderful staff - who I can't praise enough!

I would love to keep this place a secret so that we can return again and again without any problems :-) but that would be unfair to all those looking to travel to the Mara . . . . believe me you won't find a better lodge anywhere else . . . . so don't even bother trying!!

The staff made us feel part of the 'family' and we all left with a lump in our throat as it felt like we were leaving our family behind.

John our driver deserves a special mention as he had to put up with 4 women for 4 days and he managed this without any problems at all. I would also like to mention William our waiter who was so lovely that we all wanted to take him home! :-)

Reagan and Sammy the guards were excellent and very willing to share their knowledge . . . . and boy did they know their stuff!!

Daniel also was a joy to talk to . . . . he gave us a great insight into the Masai way of life.

It is hard to single people out as they all made us feel so welcome and looked after us so well . . . . . I will definitely be returning!!!!

What can I say about the Royal Mara other than it was perfect! The camp is fabulous and more comfortable than anything you could expect in a safari. The tents are located along the river where you can see the hippos bathing all day long. One great feature of the camp is the fact that it is not fenced so animals can walk around freely and you really feel in the wild.

The food was spectacular every day ranging from T-Bones on the charcoal BBQ for lunch to the Osso Bucco in the evening. The portions were huge and the quality of food irreprochable. The service was perfect with so many people looking out for you from the housekeeper to the camp ranger.

But the top quality of this camp is the game drives. Our driver John was extremely good and extremely knowlegeable. We have seen everything we wanted to see during our 3 days stay and even more: lioness and cubs few minutes after giving birth, leopard after a kill, etc... There were so many animals and the scenery was nothing short of spectacular. Their Landrovers were the best trucks we had during our trip and they were much better than other camps around.

The Royal Mara also offers a bush walk that you can take after breakfast and a visit of a Masai village. I recommend strongly both as they add a lot to the safari experience.

I can't imagine a better place for a safari in the Masai Mara!

Thank you George! We had a wonderful 5 days at the Royal Mara Lodge. All the staff, without exception, worked so hard to make our time with you a truly WONDERFUL ONE.
I have never enjoyed a holiday more. Saw 4 of the big 5! The accommodation was just lovely! There aren't enough superlatives to adequately describe this holiday. All I can say is, if you are going to the Mara, look no further ~ get intouch with George and go to the the Royal Mara Lodge. Food was just wonderful too! I almost forgot that!!!
I am planning a return trip as soon as possible!
With very best wishes to all for the New Year.

We stayed at Royal Mara from 12 dec till 17dec.It was a very warm welcome by the whole staff. We had 5 nights and can advise everybody to do so.You give yourself more time to relax and see a lot off animals. It was raining every night and i hope it came in time to start growing the grass for the animals.Bring a warm sweater and good shoes it can be very cold and muddy then.
We also done the balloonride and that was the most fantastic day off our stay.
The logde is amazing it was bigger than our house at home and the bed is great with a lenght off 2.50m and very comfortable.
The food was very good every day my compliments for the chief cook.
The gamedrives were a party every day our driverguide Simon was super nothing was too much for him to find the animals and give us a great time.
There are guards around 24 h ask Sammy for a bushwalk and he will give you lots off infomation.
For people he will never visit a place twice it will means something that we will be back at Royal Mara.Thank you George for the well organized trip and Charles for let it run so smootly. It became our top no1 holiday ever. Mimi&Berend

I booked a three-day air safari to the Royal Mara through JT Safaris (www.julius-safaris.com) and had an absolutely amazing experience there with my husband and seven-year-old son the last week of November. Please see my separate review for Julius Safaris Day Trips. Our original intent was to book a safari trip to Tsavo East and West, but decided to do the big splurge and upgrade to an air safari to the Masai Mara instead. Best decision we ever made!
From the moment the plane landed (and my son was already yelling out the animals he could see from the runway), the staff at the Royal Mara made every aspect of our trip special. The safari begins immediately with the trip from the airstrip to the lodge - we saw a huge number of animals on the short drive.
I have often been disappointed by pictures in web sites and brochures compared to the reality. This is one time the pictures do not lie - the Royal Mara is even better in real life!! Each family/group is housed in an individual lodge, which is basically a huge canvas tent inside a wooden structure. There are hard wood floors, furniture, beds, bathrooms and showers inside each lodge. From the deck of your lodge, you have a view of the river and the hippos swimming by.
What makes the lodge truly amazing, though, is the attention to detail - we spent a long time looking for all the hidden animal carvings found on chairs, beds, tables, etc... The best were the carvings under the glass sink bowls that you can only see when in the evenings when you turn on the sink area lights!
There are mosquito nets on all the beds, but we were not bothered by mosquitoes at all the entire time - and this was during the small rainy season.
The electricity /hot water only comes on in the mornings and evenings after safari trips, which is more than adequate time for recharging batteries and other electricity needs.
The food at the Royal Mara was truly the best of our Kenyan adventure. You're greeted with a t-bone steak for your first lunch, and the soups each day were insanely good!!
The Royal Mara is a open safari camp, so there are no fences. This means an armed guard escorts you to and from your lodge. My son loved having a personal "body guard". The camp is located on the Mara River, so the hippos come up to the camp and night and eat the grass surrounding your lodge. Sometimes they are a bit noisy, but how often will you have hippos "sing" you to sleep?
It is extremely dark there at night - quite a shock for people used to urban lighting. Haven't seen the true dark of night in quite some time!!
The vehicles and safari guides are top notch - it was slow season, so we basically had a vehicle to ourselves the entire trip. We saw four of the big five - the elephants were hiding - and plenty of other animals!
The Royal Mara is currently expanding to include a new, larger open air dining area and a swimming pool, which will overlook the hippo area on the river. I think these additions, scheduled to be complete next summer, will put the Royal Mara over the edge as the best safari camp in the area.
Be aware that soft drinks and alcohol are not included in the full-meal price. They are a bit costly, but once you see how isolated the lodge is, the high prices are understandable.
Overall, we highly recommend the Royal Mara and would definitely return there. Three days was not enough!!!
