“Fabulous Camp and Amazing Staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

We stayed at Kilima for 3 nights in July at the start of our honeymoon and we had the most amazing time! We booked through Imagine Africa who were really great in planning our trip from start to finish – even happily answering all my many many questions I had in the run up! ;0)

The staff at Kilima are super friendly and made us feel right at home. The camp itself is basic but it has that luxurious touch to all the tents (we stayed in the large honeymoon tents which were just fabulous!) The food each day was plentiful and yummy – 3 course lunch and dinner each day! And the spa tent offered fab massages and an amazing experience of a bubble bath overlooking the Mara River (not to be missed!)
The view is one of the best features of this camp. Yes it’s a bumpy 20min ride to the camp (and down each day to reach the park) but it is definitely worth it as the views you get are stunning!

Each night we sat around a camp fire sipping yummy wine discussing what we had seen that day. As the sun goes in we were called to dinner which was always yummy and varied and served with a flourish by the fantastic waiter! The night guard then walks you back to your tent where a hot water bottle was cozying up our bed :)

Our game driver Martin was very knowledgeable about the area and managed to go off road away from all the other vehicles meaning we were very much ‘on our own’ for the majority of the time. The viewing is great – so many animals that we actually got blasé about seeing another elephant or giraffe! ;0)
On the full day safari we stopped at a gorgeous spot for lunch supping an ice cold beer and gazing at the animals down the valley. A moment we will always remember!
We took a walking safari one day with one of the tribesman from the local Masai village and although we did not see many animals (there are not too many at the top of the hill where the camp is) it was interesting non the less as he educated us in Masai life and how they survive in the Mara.

There were many zebras in and around camp as well as warthogs and gazelle which was always exciting to see when you come out your tent in the morning! Although there were none on one particular morning as a male lion had decided to set up camp outside our tent!

Overall we had an absolutely fantastic time at Kilima made more so by the attentive wonderful staff. As my new husband said – it is the friendliest place on Earth!

Food: The food at Kilima was outstanding! They made a beautiful 3 course meal every lunch and supper. Every course they prepared was fantastic, it tasted delicious. Breakfast was very nice (loved the pancakes), and was lovely to eat before and after the morning game drive! Though there was little choice of food for lunch and supper, the food is 5 star!

Game Drives: The guides were outstanding! On our first game drive, we saw the big 5 with our guide Nickson! Throughout the week we had the privallage to see everything we wanted to ! I would recommend going for full day game drives to experience different areas of the Mara, but none the less morning and afternoon safaris were also brilliant! All the vehicles are very good, the new vehicle is nice but we preferred the open topped car for photographs! Going on game drives is a photographers dream with Kilima, there were so many incredible photo opportunities!

Walking Safaris: After a morning game drive, you can get quite tired during midday, but I did a walking safari which was very good ! I saw giraffe, reedbuck, warthog, hyrax, eland and many other animals! I learnt a lot about tracking animals and the guide taught me about footprints and animal dung and how to identify them! I was also taught about the Maasai culture which was very interesting! I would recommend doing a walking safari!

The tent: We stayed in the deluxe tent (13) which was very comfortable and had great views! The hot shower was very nice, and the toilet area was very nice. The beds were very comfortable but at night the noises keep you up, but that is part of the fun! At night we heard lions roaring from a distance, hippo grunting, and many hyena cackles, which the morning after we found hyena tracks leading to a baboon skull and shoulder near our tent! The deluxe tents couldn't have been better, and relaxing on the veranda was also very relaxing!

The camp location: Kilima's views are truly magnificent, and watching the Mara river from our tent was magical! The road going up was about 20-25mins, which is very bumpy and a bit difficult but once your at the top it is worth it for the views! The road is not a problem considering the sight at the top!

Fly Camping: I found fly camping one of the highlights of the trip! We were expecting a small tent and sleeping on a mattress with maybe 1 guard! When we arrived 8 staff greeted us and had set up a beautiful camp! We had a lovely camp-fire, a 3 course meal overlooking the hippos and crocodiles of the Mara river!! Then our tent had 2 comfortable beds! It was a truly wild experience!

Balloon Safari: The balloon safari was excellent! We saw many animals and great views! But Govener's camp made it very expensive! It was great and the breakfast after was also amazing! Would recommend it!

The Staff: Every single staff member was very kind and thoughtful! Nickson was a fantastic guide and had great knowledge of the Mara! Though we had Martin once, he was very nice and also knew a lot about wildlife! The chef was fantastic and prepared excellent food, all the waiters were lovely people! The Maasai guides were also very kind and shared many stories with us! Martin and Nora were both very nice and made our stay even better! There are so many people to thank!

We saw over 50 species of animal all thanks to our incredible guide Nickson! Saw wildebeest crossings, big 5 and everything we wanted to see! As I cannot upload all my photos on trip advisor, here is the link ! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.340683036017684.81209.337143933038261&type=3

Thank you Kilima for the trip of a lifetime!

Room Tip: I would recommend the deluxe tents as they have running hot showers and a lovely verenda!

We spent part of our honeymoon here (4 nights in October, time of the wilder beast migration) and from the moment we stepped of our wee plane, it was the holiday of a lifetime. Our guide from Kilima was there to pick us up and the safari started straight away en route to the camp, we were in awe of what we saw and what we would have missed had it not been for our guide. On arrival at the camp we were greeted with a refreshment, shown to our tent and given some much needed time to take in where we were, after a lovely lunch it was time to hit the masai in all it's glory. The camp was just amazing, staff were very friendly and knowledgable, the food was great and in the evening at the camp fire our Masai warrior was on hand to tell us about living and working in the Masai. The safari was everything we had hoped it would be and more and we also took in a nature walk and visited a Masai village, exceptionally interesting and worthwhile. This was the start of our holiday of a lifetime and it lived up to it in every way.

We stayed at Kilima Camp for one night in May (Rainy season). It was a tough drive from the Nairobi side of the Masai Mara to the Escarpment on which Kilima is excellently position, but the view from the restaurant/bar is amazing over the plains of the Mara and the Mara River certainly made up for it.
Our tent was simple and well designed although the 'bush' showers were not really adequate in the cold rainy season.
Welcoming facial towels and juice is pleasure and the welcoming drink and chat with the manager, Tom, was a nice touch.
Dinner is serviced almost to silver service in the restaurant/bar under candle light. The food is average quality and could be improved, wine and drinks are reasonable in price.
During our meal there was a large thunderstorm and on returning to our tent found it to be flooded! Luckily our luggage was stored on the dry end of the tent and we were promptly moved to a more sturdy lodge/tent which was perfect and well handled by the staff at Kilima.
In the morning we took a game drive with Martin and George and they exellently directed us to Lions and Rhinos and it was a pleasure to spend a couple hours in the Mara with them, We returned to a breakfast of fruits and small fried English breakfast which was adequate (Although we did need more coffee!). Sadly we were told due to rains and supply issues we could not take a packed lunch on our drive back to Nairobi, but this is understandable in the rainy season.
All in all a good place, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I would recommend (in the DRY season!!)

Room Tip: Upgrade from the luxury tent to the tent/cabins if travelling in the rainy season!

Was in Nairobi on business and a co-worker set up two nights at Kilima camp. I had no idea! It was amazing. It was low season so I got the driver and camp all to myself. Everyone was great and the safari drives amazing. I arrived in the morning and did an afternoon drive to the park so the entrance ($80) was good for the next day. Then on the third day I did a walking safari with the Masai warrior. I think the weakest part was the tour of the Masai village. A little too touristy. Food was excellent. Tent was excellent. Some people commented on the road up the hill. Yes it is very steep and rocky so be aware. Also note you are in a rustic setting so animals and snakes are all around. Lots of animal noise at night. I would go back in an instant if I could.

Dear , Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review and uploading some pictures ! It is true that even in Low season - April and May which is usually the rainy season - you can enjoy a GREAT SAFARI experience! I completely agree with you: animals and game are all around and you are not used to hear a lion roaming at night ! but what a great experience ! about the snakes, I never saw any personnaly. The grass is cut very short around the camp in order to make the path way safe! so no worries. There all around and we live - co-habit together ! It was a pleasure to have you as our guests and we hope to be able to welcome you again at Kilima Camp! All the best - Kilima Camp management

We spent 4 nights at the Kilima camp in November 2011 and it proved the perfect base for a safari in the Mara.

The camp is small and has an intimate feel, which we prefer to larger, more crowded camps. The views over the Mara are incredible first thing in the morning and the food was (surprisingly) good, as were the picnic baskets for the full day safaris. We stayed in a deluxe tent and it was exceptional, spacious and comfortable. Another thumbs-up for Martin whose humour and extensive knowledge made him the perfect guide.

A highly recommended place to stay for families and couples

I and my friends have just returned from 3 nights at Kilima Camp, at the end of March 2012. The most amazing place in the whole of mara, the camp is small friendly and perfect with fantastic views of the Mara. Martin our safari driver guide was the best so knowledgeable about the wildlife and most of all very friendly. Can you imagine we saw all the big 5 what a perfect way to finish our safari while out on the game drives plus many other animals thus making the game drives fun and with a different experience each day while at Kilima
Food was superb catered according to our requirements. The staff very friendly and warm, what a wonderful team led by Tom the Manager. Thanks to Ibrahim the chef and Philip the waiter - service was good.
The other beauty about Kilima was the privacy between the tents and the view over the mara river especially in the morning was breathtaking. Another thing no worries of mosquitoes while a sleep.
I will definitely go back again.
