We have just returned from staying two nights at the wonderful Mara Porini Camp. We are a 50 year old couple with two 15 year olds. We loved the camp itself. The tents we luxurious by any camping standards. Very comfy beds, very spacious and a proper bathroom with flush toilet and safari shower. They had a superb terrace for monkey watching and the service from the Masai guards (escorted you around the camp as it is unfenced), cooks and waiters was exceptional. The maximum number of people at any one time is only 12 so you get a very personal service and the camp is in its own conservancy so some of the time you are the only ones in the area looking for animals. Our guide Robert was amazing - very knowledgeable and able to spot animals that to us were invisible. 90% of those employed in the camp are from the local Masai community and have a knowldege of the animals and environment which only comes from living there all their lives. The community also recieves payment for every guest to the camp. We had 3 safaris and a walk near the camp. One full day was spent in the Masia Mara reserve itself (About 40 mins away) and the other day in the conservancy. We were there at the time of the Wildebeast migration and saw more animals than we hoped for including the more difficult to see Rhino , a heard of 50 elephants and a cheeta kill. We went with Africa Sky and were looked after Gamewatch Safaris and Safari Link for our local flight. the comnections were seemless and there was always a friendly face to meet us. The only small glitch was that we were not told of the reduced luggage allowance for the flight from Nairobi to the Mara resulting in a frantic re pack of bags in the airport so we could leave one bag behind. The flight from Wilson to the Mara is an expereince in itself as you can see loads of animals from the air.On our return the taxi waiting for us put itself at our disposal to go to the Carnivore Restuarant (the biggest BBQ you will ever see!) or wherever we had wanted to go in Nairobi, before our flight to Mombassa which was an unexpected bonus. We will all never forget the experience we had there and would recommend it wholeheartedly.
