Governor's Camp
Certificate of Excellence

This camp is used as the base for 'Big Cat Diary '. You sleep in huge army style tents with the luxury of a proper bed and shower . The camp is open , meaning that the wild life can come and go as they please, there are however armed guards just in case the wild animals venture too close. The first night a huge bull elephant decided to browse from a tree behind our tent then walked right by the side of it and fell asleep a short way away. The food was excellent and served in another large tent a short walk away.
I would not say this is luxury accommodation in fact it is quite basic but this is the best way to experience the wild and it is an experience that will never be forgotten.

Room Tip: The tent closest to the dining tent is the best just in case you get a downpour .

I had one of the most wonderful three days of my life at Governor's Camp in May this year. From the moment we took off in the little plane in Nairobi, it was a great experience. The camp is very
comfortable, well run and situated in a great location. The staff were unfailingly helpful and gracious, including our excellent driver and his "spotter". Meals were delicious but even more than that, they were set out on the beautiful shaded lawn overlooking the river. And the animals!
We had the pleasure of truly viewing the circle of life at amazingly close quarters.
I am already planning to return with more family & friends to share this great place.

We were a party of 7 and it was our first time in Africa and our first stop. The setting couldn't have been more lovely. Our tents looked out into a marsh that housed hippos, and a huge number of birds. There were resident wart hogs on the grounds that totally ignored us. Elephants, giraffes, impalas all graced the landscape at one time or another. The service was exceptional and friendly; the food was abundant and well prepared and we could have stayed a very long time.

We stayed at Little Governor's camp for two nights and it was amazing. The location was stunning, the staff couldn't have been more friendly and the organisation was superb. Leonard our guide was polite, very knowledgeable and made the safaris very special. The food was of a very high standard. We hope to go back again in the future and see the rhinos which were hiding from us. Overall an amazing experience.

Recently stayed on a 3 night safari in April. It was a great experience and the camp is first class. From the time they pick you up at the air strip to when you leave they take care of everything. The staff is great, the food is excellent and there's plenty of it, the location is the best. My guide did an excellent job of making sure everyone enjoyed each safari drive and knew so much about the animals. It was very exciting and educational. I would highly recommend the camp to anyone thinking of going on safari to the Masai.

Some minor drawbacks, and these are very minor, was that it is unclear what to tip the staff. It was obvious that the tips made up a large part of their income but myself and other camp guests were unsure of what to tip. A couple of the staff seemed disappointed with their tips even though they were higher than what was recommended. Additionally, the vehicles could use a little better maintenance. Liked the older RR's but needed a little more maintenance as a few times ours stalled out, we had to swap out one as it had to be repaired, etc. Still was a great experience and would highly recommend to anyone who wants to go on a true safari.

Governor's Camp was absolutely stunning and I could not have imagined a more perfect vacation. Everything was perfect, the food, the service, and especially my guide Alfred who went out of his way to find a very special lion, Notch, for me. The manager James was delightful and visited with our little group every night by the camp fire.

The amazing history of this beautiful camp makes it a must if you travel to the Mara and especially if you are a big cat fan. The guides know the big cats better than any others and of course you have the famous Marsh Pride right at your doorstep.

I am going back to the Mara this year and am looking forward to another perfect stay at Governors.

Room Tip: Choose a tent facing the plains!
