Spent 24 hours at this camp. we had a company event and flew the group on a private charter plane. the camp's jeeps came to the air strip, served us hot towels and cocktails upon our arrival. they took our bags and we rode on open jeeps and had a 2 hour safari ride. we were lucky to come across so many wild animals; all only a few feet away. the camp is exquisite. the tents/rooms are spacious and luxurious. I had an amazing view of the wild open wilderness and saw elephants in a distance. we had dinner at the camp and we even saw elephants stroll through the camp. dinner and breakfast was delicious. the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. in the tent there were things which were very helpful, insect spray, flashlight etc.. at night it is pitch black so staff members help guide you back to your tent. I woke up early to find a huge elephant right oustide my tent!!!

was an experience I will never forget!

Room Tip: as for the tents that look out towards the back, tent numbers 30-31-32-33 have the best views

Staying at the Governors Camp was the experience of a lifetime. The accommodations & meals are outstanding. A group of us went late February during the dry season and we saw all the animals on our list and more. While sleeping in our permanent tents at night we were visited by elephants, hippos, and who knows what else, yet we never felt threatened because the camp guards patrol the area all night long. My only regret is that we only spend two days in the camp. One could easily stay there a full week and have new experiences everyday. The management, staff, and drivers are interactive, helpful, and informative.

Room Tip: All of the permanent tents along the river at the Governors Camp are the same. If you stay closer...

It was a different world. Their world! The animals and I felt hugely privelaged to be part of it. Governors captured the essence of entering the world of the wild. The people were so lovely. This was one of the best experiences of my life! However! Be very wary of who you book to fly with. I was flown 3 hours around Kenya on Blue Skies Aviation down the convenience of their flight schedule. On a plane that smelt of Oil, with no water. So - go to Governors' but fly with them too if you can!

We have just returned from our 4th visit to Kenya, as always staying at the wonderful Turtle Bay Beach Club in Watamu.

This years planned excursion was to Governor's Camp in the Masai Mara, the jewel in Kenya's safari crown. As we had visited both the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti last year, the bar was very high. However, Governor's did not disappoint.

I hate flying. I fly several times a year and it never gets any better, so a prop plane excursion into the Mara was a real effort for me. But if you don't try it, you don't get to marvel at the world we live in.

In fact, the flight was OK, both in and out of the airstrip. With a couple of quick stops along the way, I feared the worst, but I started to love the raw nature of this type of flying, much the same as the raw nature of safari's, so I coped comfortably.

On arriving at Governor's, we were welcomed beautifully by James and given an introduction to the camp facilities and our tent. Helpers conveyed our light luggage to the tent and we had an afternoon of exploration and rest prior to the evenings game drive. Our tent, nestling near the banks of the Mara river, was ideal. Hot and cold running water, good shower, double bed with a fantastic mattress and 24hr electricity. The views and sounds were to die for.

We had an excellent lunch, with the manager Philip making his way expertly made round the luncheon tables, talking to guests about what they had seen and introducing himself to new arrivals. When a manager makes notes on nationality, names and incidentals about his guests, I take that as an attention to detail!!!

We were introduced to our driver, Moses and proceeded to venture into the Mara in our Land Rover.

That first evening, we encountered a female cheetah with her three juvenile cubs looking for a meal. The photos are astounding and we sat in awe of the beauty of these creatures. That evening, we also saw various antelope. Kopi, Elephant, Warthog and Hippos. We returned to the camp thinking the Mara was just a paradise and that we were indeed lucky.

The evening dinner was excellent, if the servers were a little careless in their observations, however the food was very good and we went to the open air bar feeling full.

A couple of G & T's and we were ready for Lala Salama. A Masai guide showed us back to our tent, where after washing and changing, we bedded down for a night of slumber, listening to Hippos grunting in the nearby river and birds, bugs and frogs sounding us to sleep.

The next day's drive was heaven on earth, We agreed to forego breakfast and have a "working brekkie" out on the plains which I recommed. Moses retraced our steps and took us back to the aforementioned Cheetah and her cubs. The early morning allowed us to witness her hunting a Thompsons Gazelle down for her cubs. She moved like lightening, killed quickly and looked imperious in the morning sunrise. What an honour.

Later that morning, we caught up with the Marsh pride, who had met with 3 of the 4 musketeers (Male lions), glorious in their massive black manes and watched the cubs harrassing their fathers for attention. That morning we also saw more antelope, buffalo, elephants, ostrich....... the list goes on. I commented to Moses that everything looked extremely healthy and he agreed that the Mara was in good balance with both herbivores and carnivores in good condition.

Our breakfast was taken underneath an Acacia tree, on the plains, in the company of a few hundred Topi. It consisted of tomato and cucumber sandwiches, bacon, sausages, mango, pineapple and cakes, washed down with apple juice and tea or coffee. Moses kept us safe from any harm, scanning the area as we ate. Heaven indeed.

We returned for a wonderful lunch and a rest before the evenings game drive.

The evening was an experience to die for. Not only did we see more diverse animals as well as those before, but we were hit by a one in five year hail storm that rocketed pea sized hail onto the canvas of the Land Rover. Possibly four inches of water hit us in about 3 hours. The roads and plains flooded, mud appeared where previously had been dirt and Moses had a battle and a half to get us back to camp. Exhilarating to say the least. The camp staff disembarked each Land Rover one by one at the reception entrance to limit us getting soaked, carrying umbrellas and helping people off their transport.

Then we were advised that, due to the bad weather, a bull elephant had decided to join us in camp to weather the storm himself, so we had to tip toe through the watery maze to get to our tent, under the guidance of our ever helpful Masai guides.

A shower and change and our guides took us back to the dining room for another sumptuous meal under canvas. A couple of after dinner G & T's and our guides took us back to our tent for sleep.

Said Elephant had decided he wasn't going to move that night, so he spent much of the night circling around the camp, particularly liking our tent. My partner got a little frightened when, on one occasion, he let out a full grunt at midnight and rubbed hit trunk against the canvas to smell who was inside!! Classic. He stayed a while, then moved away, then came back a couple of hours later. Nothing to be worried about, just a wonderful feel of the animals and aurora of this Mara camp.

In the morning, Moses took us to the airstrip to see the most wonderful post-storm sunrise and to catch up with more lion prides (2), hippos by the strip in a cabbage ladened pool and meet our night time visitors, who by now had left the camp to feed.

Lunch was spent viewing the elephants near the camp (20 metres away) and eventually they couldn't help themselves and came back in camp to join us. Eventually, we had to gather our gear, join Moses for the final trip to the airstrip and depart, after what I have to say was the most wonderful experience I could have imagined.

Governor's is delightful. The staff are helpful and friendly. The manager Philip, is a knowledgeable and gentlemanly host. The tents are homely and the food is excellent.

You will get a real feel for Africa here and be as close to the wild animals of the area as you possibly can.....ANYWHERE. (and I hope I have conveyed this).

If you are an adrenaline junky, a wildlife lover or a thrill seeker, it has everything. If you like the high life with a touch of roughing it class, you can't go wrong. If you like the unexpected, you will thrive.

However, if you want marble baths and concrete walkways, no bugs and silver service, you might come away disappointed. This is real safari country. And long may it stay so.

We loved it.

Room Tip: Keep an open mind, a huge camera memory drive and just do it!!

our second visit to Governors camp, and we never thought it could get better, however we have just had three days there and it exceeded all expectations. The service is second to none, location is fantastic if you want to see an abundance of wildlife and birds, you can either sit and watch hippos from the camp or see the Marsh pride and so much more on safari, Sopia our safari guide was so knowledgeable and went out of his way to ensure we saw as much as we could, even had a cheetah on our roof (awesome). We booked with Let's go wild safaris and could not fault the trip.

We booked our recent trip to Kenya through Imagine Africa. The second part of our trip was at the Governors camp in the Masai Mara. This was our third visit to this camp and each time our stay exceeds expectations. it is situated in the most beautiful location in the Mara on the banks of the Mara river with all the wildlife immediately around you, including the famous Marsh Pride of lions. Accommodation is in 5 star tents with en-suite bathroom fitted with all mod cons - although you sleep in tents you really can't call it camping - it is 5 star. Food is superb, with plenty of choice to meet everyone's taste and service excellent - they really can't do enough for you. The game drives were wonderful, - the drivers/guides superb - their knowledge amazing. When considering a safari holiday location of the lodge / camp is one of the most important factors and you can't get a better location than this one - right in the middle of the Mara with all the wildlife within feet of the camp - at night the animals, such as elephants, hippo, giraffe and water buffalo stroll around the camp itself. This was a third visit to the Governors camp and I hope that we will have more - location, accommodation and service first class - cannot be faulted. Love it!!!!
