“wonderful tented camp”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2008

Rekero camp has got to one of the best places I have ever stayed in. The camp itself is in a beautiful location next to the river, the tents are superb and very comfortable. Gerard, Rainee,Jackson, Rob, Martin and all the other people working there made our stay there a real pleasure, and nothing was too much trouble. The food was absolutely superb. We saw so much wildlife, thanks to James and his incredible eyesight. I couldn't recommend this camp more highly.

Rekero is an absolute dream. We've been twice now and both times it's been amazing. The setting, the hosts (Gerrard, Rainee, Rob & Jackson), the guiding, the tents, the food are just wonderful. If you get a chance to go to this camp then take it - I can't recommend it enough.

Rekero was our 3rd and final stop in Kenya on our 3 week honeymoon before continuing to the Seychelles. I am not a “camper” and was a little nervous when my husband told me we were going to a “tented camp” in the middle of the Masai Mara, where animals walk freely through the camp at night.

Our experience at this tented camp was fantastic. Gerard and Rainie have thought of everything. I can honestly say we enjoyed every second of our stay. The level of service is exceptional, yet unobtrusive.

Our tent was absolutely spotless (I was very impressed by this given the location of the camp – I thought it would be susceptible to bugs as the other hotels had been during our honeymoon). There was a double bed and a single bed, a dressing table with drawers for clothes and a hanging closet. The en-suite bathroom tent had a sink, with hot water in a thermos flask, cold water in a jug and drinking water in a bottle, a ( 2 minute) hot water shower plus a flush toilet!! Outside the tent were 2 chairs where we could take in the view of the river and watch the animals.

The main lodge / mess tent had sofas and chairs where all the guests gathered before lunch and dinner to talk about their game drives. There were also hammocks and sun-beds on the main lawn for those who needed a break! Lunch was held on the lawn over looking the river and dinner was held in the mess tent dinning room. One of the things that made this experience so special and set it apart from the other lodges was that the hosts, Claire and Rob and the owners Gerard and Rainie joined us for lunch and dinner. There were 3 of them present at every meal. This provided an atmosphere that was unique and welcoming. They told stories about the camp, its history, the animals and their experience in the bush. They made sure that you had everything you could possibly want all the time. There was no request too big or small. The food was excellent. Lunch included multiple salads, some sort of meat dish, fruit and cheese. Dinner was a 3 course meal - a tasty appetizer, followed by multiple vegetable dishes to accompany a meat dish and a delicious desert. After dinner, we sat by the fire (if there were no animals in the camp) or in the lounge area in the mess tent and re-lived the day’s excitement. The hot water bottle in bed was very welcoming after a long day. We did have trouble sleeping on the first night because our tent was the furthest from the main mess tent and the noise from the hippos in the river and the grunting of the lions was remarkably loud – it was a fun, unforgettable sleepless night. Everywhere we went after sundown and before sunrise, we were accompanied by Masai people with spears and bow & arrows. They knew where the animals were and took the necessary precautions. Our last night, there were elephants in the camp so we were driven to our tent!

Our guide Dixon was excellent. He is extremely knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to be around. He educated us about the Masai culture and told us about his family and his village. We discussed at length the differences between the western society and the Masai traditions. He took great pride in showing us all the Masai Mara had to offer in terms of game. We saw the “big five” and my personal favorite, the 3 cheetah brothers, who we followed for a good part of the afternoon. We did not see other cars except when the other guides at our lodge shared special sightings with Dixon over the radio and we raced over to have a look. Every morning we took a picnic breakfast and Dixon never failed to find an idyllic spot where we could enjoy our food. One morning, he took us to a clearing that overlooked a river so we could get out of the car, eat breakfast and watch the hippos and crocodiles in the river. During every afternoon game drive, we would stop for a “sundowner” - a drink just before sundown. Dixon set up chairs by the car where we could sit and reflect on the day. One day, we sat in the car and watched 5 lions lounge around, whilst enjoying a Tusker, the local beer. It was an awesome experience. On our last evening at Rekero, the hosts set up an amazing sundowner for us near the camp. There was a blanket on the rocks of the river bank with champagne and roasted nuts for us and a personalized card from the staff at the camp. The perfect end to a perfect stay at a perfectly ran camp!

Many of the other guests were return guests who have been going to Rekero for years. My husband and I will certainly become one of those return guests and very much look forward to returning to such a special place.
