“Unbelievable experience!”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

The tents ere elegant and roomy. The food is delicious and the staff is impeccable. We had a great stay and lots of animal sitings on our drives. If you have an opportunity take the hot air balloon ride. This is an experience of a lifetime watching the animals from a birdseye view The club is next to the Mara River where the hippos are plentiful.

Room Tip: Stay up close to the logge on the poolside. The animals aren't as noisy. Our room was #7.

When researching safari camps through reviews, it is very difficult to differentiate from one camp to the next, other than location and amenities; most have outstanding reviews, yet rank very differently. What many reviewers fail to do is to differentiate between the game drives and the physical camp – having gushing reviews on game sightings in the Mara is inspiring, but is very unhelpful in reviewing particular camps.

Every camp has its own advantages in terms of location – the Fairmont is not ideally located, but despite this we sighted wildlife within moments of leaving the camp, and even heard of the elusive leopard spotted just meters from the encampment’s front gates. As we will discuss later, the knowledge and caliber of the tour guides and vehicles more than made up for any deficiencies in location that may require a slightly longer safari experience.

The Property
The Fairmont property is well manicured and secure; it boasts ultra luxury tents with very comfortable beds and all the services, amenities and features you’d find in a typical Fairmont property. It’s very easy to forget you’re in a tent when staying in one – the rainfall shower is a nice touch, as are the hot water bottles tucked into your beds during turn-down service.
Our tent was located right on the banks of the Mara river – up to a dozen hippos were about 20 feet from our tent on a regular basis, and their snorts were our early-morning wake-up call (along with softly uttered “Jambo” from our resident butler as he brought warm treats and hot coffee prior to our early morning game drive).

The pool was refreshing and the food astounding considering our remote location; when we advised the waiter of the dietary restrictions of one member of our party, further choices were made available after the head chef arrived at our table for a consultation.

This was a consistency of the hotel staff; they were all very responsive to every need.

There is complimentary wireless available in the lobby.

The Game Drive
The drives take place in top-end, custom-outfitted Land Cruisers, fully outfitted for different seasons and weather and with fresh coffee in the morning, water and beer in the afternoon if you so choose. There were several times during our several days that we required the capabilities of the Land Cruisers going through river crossings and other difficult terrain. We saw competitor tour companies and vehicles without these capabilities and they simply wouldn’t have been able to go to where we did. Our driver, Anthony, was very knowledgeable; we were able to see the Big 5 over 4 days (including the elusive leopard), lots of lions and cubs and the Mara’s 2 rhinos (who are under the careful watch of the Kenyan Rangers).

Overall, this is a top-notch property from which to explore the wonders of the Masai Mara – in line with Western standards of excellence.

We stayed in several places during our time in Kenya. This had the most wonderful gardens. The tents are located along the Mara river and you wander through mature gardens and trees to get to your rooms. The area is well fenced and lit so you can walk without accompaniment at night. The tents are very comfortable. Food service is good with outdoor grilling for lunch and some dinners. The lodge is spacious with reasonably good, free wifi. While an older property, the Fairmont has been remodeled and upgraded. There is nothing dated about the place. The tents, the grounds and the lodge are all beautiful, yet the place retains its historic feel. We sayed here two nights and I wish we had stayed longer.

Room Tip: We had room 12. It over looked the river and about 20 hippos.

Staff are really friendly, welcoming and helpful! Room/tents are something special, especially since it's not expected in the wild bush! Food is good to and so are the facilities for being so far away from the city!

Our family of four (dad, mom, daughters 17 & 14) stayed at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club for five days. Our tent (15) overlooked a hippo beach sometimes hosting as many as 60 hippos! The blue monkeys climbed along our porch railing. The resort is enclosed by an electric fence allowing us to walk to the lodge for meals, entertainment, and WiFi without an armed escort. The beds were comfortable and warmed each night by a hot water bottle. The warm or cool wet towels at the end of each game drive were much appreciated. Concern the Conservancy was somehow less desirable than the Reserve was quickly put to rest. There is no fence between the Conservancy and the Reserve and the animals don't know the difference. We saw the big five, all in the Conservancy. Strict rules in the Reserve kept us further from the animals. Our guide, Ashford, was great. He met us at the airport and was with us everyday. He was extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. He explained the animals behavior and habits and answered hundreds of questions. He suggested an itinerary of game drives that kept us busy each day interspersing two game drive (morning and afternoon) days with full day drives to the Reserve, and a trip to a Masai village. His Land Cruiser was stocked with beverages (water, soft drinks, and beer), picnic lunches on long drives, and blankets. I was originally leery of an open vehicle, but after taking an enclosed car to an early balloon launch I realized how lucky we were. The car with windows rattled something fierce drowning out any commentary a guide might provide and causing headaches due to the din. Our family of four had our car and Ashford to ourselves during our visit. We would also highly recommend a sunrise balloon ride followed by a champagne breakfast, truly breathtaking.

We recently stayed at the Fairmont property in Masai Mara. flying in from Nairobi on a small plane and landing in masai mara was quite an experience! You are greeted by the hotel staff, offered a nice cool beverage and your guide for your stay takes over and drives to the hotel. We had Henry, who was terrific! On the way to the hotel, you stop and have a really close look at hippos in the Mara river and get to admire them in their glory, basking in the sun and languishing in the water. It's a short ride to the hotel. Our 'tent' was a luxurious room with all the nice amenities and super comfortable bed and linens, very similar to what you would find in other Fairmont hotels. Our game drives were well organized and we did manage to see all the big five, except the leopard!! We did bring warm clothes for the early morning drives, and it was useful. The pool on the property as well as the massage services were very useful during the daytime to leverage. Our only disappointment was the meals, thought they could have had more variety , and more flavourful. Service at the hotel was fabulous and the staff are well trained to help out. We had a great stay. Thank you to Dalton for all his help!

We spent two nights here at the Mara Safari Club. The location was spectacular, right on the banks of the Mara river. The tents were beautiful and Dalton looked after us well with tea brought to our room at 5am before our morning game drives and a hot water bottle at night as it can get chilly.

We had tent 51 which was a long walk from reception, so if you have mobility issues, try to request a room in the twenties.

Service was good throughout the hotel with waiters and security staff anxious to please. The reception staff could have been a little more helpful when trying to schedule game drives.

Joseph, our guide, was amazing! We did several drives throughout our stay and he even took us on a night drive, despite the pouring rain. We saw every possible animal and on our final morning, Joseph even surprised us with a cheetah. He had also packed a surprise breakfast which we ate on blankets overlooking the zebras and gazelles on the savannah! He was extremely knowledgeable and truly made this a trip of a lifetime. Thank you Joseph!
