“not to miss”
Reviewed October 15, 2011

location is spectacular, food and service outstanding. The experience is not to miss, sleeping in a luxury tent on the Mara River listening to the hippos and other nightlife is an incredible opportunity. The game was abundant and the drivers are accommodating and experienced, making for great photographic opportunities. We stayed at several locations throughout the Mara and in the Serengeti and if you only have a few days to spend on safari, this is the place to do it.

Room Tip: any room is a great room, if you want to have the hippos right outside on the river when you wake up...

What a lovely place for three days. We went on an all day safari into the Masai Mara where we had one of my three favorite memories of Africa. the Fairmont had made a lovely picnic lunch that was spread out under a Tortillis tree with a 360 degree view of herds of wildebeest, Giraffe, zebras. It was astounding and unforgettable. Two hyenas about a 100 yards away kept a close watch and descended on our picnic spot after we left.
I unfortunately had a kidney stone while I was there. All the personnel were concerned and helpful. Our tent overlooking the river and hippos was phenomenal. Although I know there are camps further into the reserve, I would without reservation recommend the Fairmont. If I were to recommend a camp from which to experience safari, this would be it.

Room Tip: It is always lovely to have a room furthest from the main area.

This was a unique experience accentuated by the Fairmont reputation for fine accommodations, good food, and excellent customer service. The setting is superb and adds to the special attraction of the Masai Mara, the only park we visited where you could drive off the road right up to the animals. An additional benefit is the relaxing pool and comfortable, attractive bar area.

The location is absolutely stunning in that it sits on a 20 ft high plateau with the Masai river surrounding from three sides. So whether you are sipping a drink, having breakfast or dinner, or just relaxing outside your tent, you need only peer outwards and you see crocodiles, 10's of Hippos, 1000's of birds....truely amazing.

The hotel itself is beautfully laid out, with modern African touches that makes it uber-chic. High wooden, dark earthy colours, and an open bar, looking out to the river, with a huge fireplace for those cold nights, all lend for a great atmosphere.

The accomadation is a stunning luxury tent, with its own patio, right on the river, The inside is just amazing, a beautifully laid out four-poster bed, with very modern bathroom facilities in the back. Leather, wood, and earthy tiles abound.

The staff are most eager to help from the security greeting you with "Jumbo" at the gate all the way to receptionists, bartenders, maids, etc..

You really can't beat East Africa for Safari and the drivers here were excellent. The minute you leave the gates, you find 1000's of everything, zebra, monkeys, giraffs, gazelles, you name it it is there. We also found1 lion and 3 lionesses having their nap, with our jeep was literally 3 feet away. A cheetah resting on a tree, and a horde of elephants running wildly across the hills.

Lastly, all should take the Hot Air Balloon ride, eventough it is much too early. We are awakened at 4:30am and driven off where we slid into rthe basketsand up we went. Spectacular scenes of sunrise, with wonderful views underneath.

Let's get the one possible negative out of the way first: because of it's location their electrical power is via a generator and they do turn it off during certain hours during the day and overnight. Now, with that out of the way: the service is five star - PLUS. My lovely bride of ten years has MS and uses a wheelchair. Every employee made our visit a memorable stay. They made special arrangements for our guide to have access to the proper government refuge so that we could witness "The Migration" [our local tour company had put us into the wrong camp and refuge]. The safaris within their refuge area was spectacular. Every drive was better than the last one. We would have loved to have spent another couple of weeks there.

Room Tip: Every tent seems to be good.

They call this a tent?!? Wonderful accommodation with lovely furnishings, comfy bed, incredible sights and sounds of hippos only steps away, a real shower with hot water on demand, flush toilets, excellent food, and very friendly, funny, and competent staff. Our stay at the "MSC" gets even higher marks as we moved on to very inferior "tents" in Tanzania for the rest of our safari. I guarantee you will not be disappointed staying here...location, location, location!

A few of us spent 2 nights here and it truly was a trip of a lifetime. The staff was beyond hospitable and the property was impecable. I'm not sure how it could have been better. The property is on the Conservancy, Therefore they don't officially provide safari drives to the annual migration crossing of the Mara River i.e. Paradise Crossing, but you can ask your driver if they are willing to take you there. It will change your schedule from 2 drives per day to one long day, but it is well worth it as we were able to see wildebeest and zebra crossing with crocodiles eating away. They will pack a boxed lunch for you as well. Within the 3 day trip we were able to see the Big Five, even without heading to the migration. This place is top notch for sure. Our safari driver was Henry, and even if I don't have another reference, I really think he is the best guide in the Mara. Also, enjoy the sound of hippos and other animals throught the day and night. It's part of the experience. Also, I would recommend flying there as the roads are quite rough. We drove there and it was fun experience to see that part of Africa as well. Enjoy!

Room Tip: I would recommend staying in tents that are away from the main area, but all tents seem quite privat...
