We visited Base Camp expecting a luxury accomodation as advertised!
It was NOT luxury. I chose it because it was an eco camp and had awards for its Eco tourism status.
It was fantastic being in an open camp on the Masai Mara and being protected by our masai warriers who guarded the camp all night and escorted you from your tent to the eating area. The tents were good and spread out to give you loads of privacy. You could sit on your terrace and watch the monkeys and babboons and hear the animal noises from the Mara only being seperated from them by a small river which had crocodiles lazing on the banks The safari was fantastic and the guides and vehicles top class.
BUT! The following things spoilt the stay and I would not go back there or recommend it to anyone until they sort these problems out
There was no hot water for a shower. The toilets were like a throne leading to a hole in the floor. I never dared look down.
The food and restaurant were awful. The food was served in a really unappetising way. If we hadn't been in the middle of nowhere I would have chosen not to eat any of it but there was no other option Also If you were slightly late they would run out of food
There was not a proper bar service and you would be lucky if you got a chilled beer. I then tried a bottle of wine which was well overpriced.
During the day there was no one serving in the bar to get a drink of either tea coffee etc
All in all this made our stay at the camp uncomfortable
Finally the flight from Malindi to the landing strip was like something out of Indiana Jones. I didn't realise flying could be so scary. Just make sure you go with a reputable company

We went to Basecamp in early July and had a fantastic time. We were picked up at the 'airport' by our guide, Kim. Although quiet natured, Kim was an excellent guide answering our questions and he had a great sense of humor. A Maasai, Kim also answered cultural questions, which was really interesting. Throughout the three day safari, he was able to find all the animals we were interesting seeing, including two kills! We definitely felt that we had a talented guide. In 1 full day and two half days, we went on 4 drives. We felt that we got our moneys worth by far.

The accommodations were also really nice. The tents are covered by thatched roofs, and each one overlooks a pond. For tents, we felt that we were living in luxury. The rooms were comfortable and romantic. You shower outside facing the pond, but don't worry no one but the crocodiles or monkeys would see you! It was so refreshing to shower outside! Be sure you are patient with the water, it is heated by solar panels and takes sometime to get the warm water to the shower--- but do not worry it happens! The tents circle a main area where food is served, which is a hot buffet and yummy. After dinner we watched a traditional Maasai dance and listened to some songs.

As advertised, the camp is an eco-friendly lodge. They are able to master this through solar electricity and relying on nature. If you are going to the Mara and expect to stay in luxurious hotels, this is not the place for you. However, if you are nervous it is too roughing it, it is not. This was nicer then many American hotels. It proves that eco-friendly can be comfortable.

We really loved Basecamp.. We are even looking to staying at their other lodges across the world.
