“Luxury in the Wilds”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

We booked ourselves into the Keekorok Lodge after doing a fair bit of research on the net. Since this was our first visit to Africa, we were not too sure what we would find. Turns out we chose well. The lodge is set on expansive grounds in the thick of the reserve, and this makes it very convenient since good wildlife is never too far away. Each time we drove out on a trip into the reserve, we started seeing game pretty much just out of the main gate. We stayed in a well appointed, detached and independent one room cottage that was both very stylish and very comfortable. Attention to detail is commendable and our cottage was thoroughly serviced every day. The food was very good too, with an extensive spread at the buffet table for all three meals. Staff were unobtrusive and courteous at all times. The spacious gounds are very well landscaped and equally well kept. There is a log cabin style bar on stilts at the back of the grounds, right next to a large, natural watering hole. This is a great place to sit out an afternoon over a couple of drinks, watching the wild life, mostly a large herd of hippos, lazing around in the water. The place abounds in baboons and chimpanzees. The highlight of our stay there would surely be the adolescent chimp which laid seige to our cottage one afternoon. Seeing some juicy fruits on the table just inside the door, the little fella just parked himself in front of the cottage and even tried to sneakily push open the door and come in - no doubt to make a grab for the goodies - when he thought we were not looking !!

Typically in African Game reserves, one has a lot of time between the morning and evening game drives. Keekorok is a lovely place to just relax and hang out through the day. Our time at Keekrok left us refreshed and we would certainly go back again if we ever had a chance.

This was the last of the lodges we stayed at during our 7 day safari, and it was by far the worst. The staff we chatted to were friendly, and our breakfast waiter was very attentive, and our room was clean (although it was not possible to keep the bathroom properly clean given the poor state of repair that it was in)
Food
We arrived towards the end of lunch when there was little variety left, unfortunately this was the norm. The food was disgusting, the bread rolls were always as hard as rocks, and all the food seemed to have a very watery consistency. On the second evening my husband brought some mutton soup to the table, the smell of rotten fish coming from it was so bad it made me retch. At the end of our second evening the chef asked if everything was ok. We were polite but told him how bad the food had been, especially as there was a heavy bias towards curry (my husband hates it). The chef told us they have to cater for their Indian guests and we should have asked him to cook us something else - this is direct discrimination against their European guests, and apart from anything else, there was never any indication that there was any other food available. There were a large number of very rude Chinese guests here at the same time as us - their rudeness and attitude towards us was a big shock. There was an obligatory tip added to every bill, and then we were told that the hotel had run out of change so we had to round the bill up again - crafty! I don't mind tipping, but at my discretion and when it's warranted. We soon decided to buy all our drinks on a tab to avoid paying extra every time.
Accommodation
Our rooms were away from the main hotel, they were small and dark and the bathrooms were of substandard quality, with windows which didn't meet the frames so mosquitoes could get in (thank goodness the bed had a mosquito net). There was only 1 chair in the room, with no lighting in this area
Location
The redeeming feature of this lodge was the wildlife which was very evident as soon as we left the grounds of the lodge. We were also stunned to see zebra 10 feet away from us as we stood outside our room - they knew we were there, but we were quiet and still, watching them graze.
Unless changes are made to bring the accommodation and food up to the standard this lodge is supposed to be, I would not recommend staying here

Got the bungalow closest to reception and as its very flimsy I got woken when the staff got up at 4.30 every morning. There was black mould on the ceiling, taps were loose, socket on the wall was falling off, the shower was leaking and there was no torch in spite of generator stop every night. The food in the restaurant was standard safari lodge fare but badly cooked and the last day we were completely forgotten as 100 Chinese took over. And yes the drains smelt.
I can read that others compliment them on the animals but they are there for all anyway not just for this lodge.

This is the worst accommodation I have ever experienced.

Upon arrival to the lodge for my 2 day stay I was whisked off to lunch so that I was delayed in seeing my horrific room. The room was tiny, was completely worn out, the bathroom was falling apart and out of date, no air conditioning and the furniture was very old and poor quality, the only ventilation was a tiny window.

Upon complaining I soon found out that the corrupt management of the hotel had sold on my room. This seems to be common practice at Keekorok and affected the 10 people in my party and also another tour company that booked the lodge well in advance.

The staff were particularly unhelpful with finding alternative accommodation and couldn't careless, management dealt with the issue extremely unprofessionally.

Moving on from the accommodation the food was average, it seems recycled food is the standard. Don't be surprised to see the lunch dished out at dinner mixed with a sauce.

There are 60 other lodges on the Masai Mara go to another one or you'll be disappointed. I just wish I had read the reviews on here before I went.

Room Tip: Avoid the Lodge, there are much better ones in Masai Mara

We stayed twice on this trip to the Maasai Mara & the experiences were quite different. On both occasions we stayed in a Garden Room, detached rooms making them quiet, nicely appointed with lots of birds & monkeys around. The staff were so good they really made our stay extra special & tried to arrange a bush meal one evening but the rain prevented this but they still went out of their way to make the meal extra special for us. The mini bar is locked so you need to remember to ask they to unlock it if you want to use it & the electric goes off between 3-6pm which did mean the water was cold for a shower one evening. We found the food to be good & enjoyed the restaurant for Breakfast & evening meal but on our second stay it was very noisy with a large group from China that seem to run riot the staff needed the patience of a saint to deal with them 120 plus another group came for lunch so glad we missed that and were surprised the staff did not warn any of the guests. We also heard another group arrived with no rooms available /double booked so were put up in staff quarters so we were very lucky and enjoyed our time here.

Wow! The hotel is first class with friendly helpful staff. Rooms are good with surprise visitors. Keep your door closed otherwise you will get a visit from a Baboon looking for biros & socks (the country is obessed with them). Got woken up at night by a rustling outside the window - happened to be a Hippo passing by - surreal!

Great game drives. We went with SOMAK - full marks to them too.

Road to Masai Mara is very poor - 50 miles of rough off road stuff.

Room Tip: Keep your doors closed, otherwise you might get visitors

First time on safari and keekorok was 1 of 3 lodges that we stayed at and by far the best.
It is a little daunting driving down the masi road and I did at first wonder where we would end up but so, so worth it.
You actually stay right in the thick of it, to the point where ther are actually zebras, hippos and elephants outside your room. . I know that's hard to believe but true!!
No need to worry though as the staff are brilliant and escort you back to your room at night once it's dark.
Food good, rooms adequate and clean and the staff are lovely.
You can't really compare to staying anywhere else, as lets remember you are in the middle of the masi mara.
If considering a safari holiday, this is a must.
Bonus was also seeing the big 5!!
Memories that will stay with us forever
