“Astonishing Safari”
Reviewed July 8, 2011

I have just spent the last week at Kicheche Mara Camp. Having previously spent a lot of time in Africa over the past 20 years, and seen a lot of wildlife, I can say that the Guides at Kicheche are the best I have ever come across. Their understanding of the wildlife of the Mara is surely second to none and their ability to spot cats in particular truly amazing. They can put you in exactly the right place to see and photograph the animals and birds. The food is excellent and the location of the Camp is stunning. You are looked after magnificently.

I cannot fault Kicheche in any way. Lovely tents, welcoming and friendly staff. The setting is just beautiful. I'm a bit embarassed to say that asIi'm writing this, looking out of the window onto a Glasgow cul-de-sac, tears are flowing as I want to be back in Kicheche tomorrow if possible.

Kicheche Mara Camp is located overlooking some of the plains in the Mara Conservancy. The accomodation is luxury tented rooms with en suite shower and toilet. The food was out of this world with service to match. Game drives into the surrounding area revealed all that Africa has to offer with great guides hunting out even the most elusive of animals and birds to view for guests. We took a flight from Nairobi (Wilson) airport to a local airstrip saving hours of car journey and were out in the bush in minutes. The camp staff and management made us feel welcomed and nothing too much trouble - no need to pack loads of clothes - laundry is included (except for smalls and even then washpowder is provided). We travelled with Steppes Discovery (Cirencester) and not even the slightest glitch from start to finish. A fantastic trip and we would go back tomorrow if we could!

My partner and I just spent the most wonderful four days in the amazing Kicheche Mara Camp.

Having come to Kenya to attend a wedding, we wanted to see a bit of the African wildlife and famous Masai Mara area.
I looked on-line and was totally bombarded by the mass of places to stay. Luckily our travel agent in London suggested just a couple of places, which made things a lot easier. I also read reviews on here, which were mostly glowing (beware of complaints on here....I suggest looking at these people's other reviews...it seems not everyone is who they say they are and some can be competitors trying their hand at sabotage)!

We weren't looking for a 'fake' bush camp experience : Some of the camps looked like large corporate hotels trying to do their idea of 'camping'. We wanted to feel like we were in the 'thick of it', but with a few home comforts, and I'm not talking a luxury spa, but a toilet and washing facilities in your tent and a comfy bed with real sheets and pillows!

I have to say that from the moment we flew in to the tiny airstrip and saw the ground below us teeming with wildlife, to the moment we lifted off again, the trip was AMAZING. Firstly the staff were just wonderful. The Management are just brilliant at their job and lead the way for a super team of people, who made us feel welcome and looked after us without ever going into the realms of insincere glibness. It was a feeling of genuine warmth and concern for our experience with them.

The food and drink were amazing too, especially as we were in the middle of the conservancy and miles away from 'shops'! I would only say that the coffee was very weak (and when you are up at dawn for game drives, you need all the help you can get!) not quite the standard we're used to and also the juice could be freshly squeezed. But they are minor grumbles in the grand scheme of things.

And grand the scene was too! The location of the camp is just stunning. Set in a beautiful valley of lush Acacia trees, shrubs and grass with a little stream running through, it looked like a set from Jurassic Park! Add to that the sheer numbers of varied wildlife we saw from the camp alone, and you have a veritable paradise.

The game drives where great and we saw tons of animals, but what we really enjoyed was getting our feet to the ground and doing a walking safari with a Masai guide and a rifle-toting ranger! Seeing game from a windowless car is quite a thrill....but seeing 6 Hyena's 100ft away with noting but grass between you is something I will always remember, they are so much bigger then you think! The towering majesty of the Giraffe is only heightened by being at ground level. I loved learning about the plants and insects of the Mara too.

In summary, our stay at Kichche was just simply way more then we dared hope for and we'll be back again....next time with the kids!

Thanks Team Kichche Mara Camp. You rock.

We had been to Kicheche Bush Camp a couple of years ago, which we thoroughly enjoyed but thought this time round we would like a change of scenery. From the moment we stepped off the light aircraft bringing us from Nairobi, we knew we had made the right choice. Our Masai guide, Jimmy, welcomed us at Shikar Airstrip in traditional dress and on our way to the camp we saw zebra, widebeest, giraffe, buffalo & elephant! The welcome on arrival at the camp could not have been warmer and we were well briefed. The accomodation is in eight individual tents, each sleeping up to four so ideal for a family with children. The tent is not "luxurious" (you use a bucket shower but the loo is fully flushing) yet it could not have been more comfortable - spacious (even with the extra two beds we didn't need) with plenty of storage space and a view across the savannah where animals roam to die for - on the first evening we heard a lion roar and a hippo bathed in the bend of the river below us. Dining is alfresco round a communal table with your hosts where local Kenyan & international food freshly prepared is served with ample wine included. On our safari drives we saw all big five except the elusive leopard and on one of our evening drives we had our sundowner watching a cheetah with her cub - what could be a better way of spending an early evening? Jimmy our guide was very knowledgeable & nothing was too much trouble. All the staff were fantastic, full of smiles and always helpful. The young management were on top of their game - our stay co-incided with my wife's birthday and Nina & Echedey put on an evening we shall never forget. All in all a very memorable few days and we would recommend the camp strongly to all who want to experience the true safari.

Not sure of what to expect, we were more than happy with the bright, spacious and comfortable tent, perfect for our family party which included 7 and 12 year old girls. We were located at the far end of the camp, with staggering views across a migration path, allowing sightings of Zebra, Giraffe, Wildebeest and Baboon from the comfort of our deckchairs.
Inside, we found 4 x warm, comfortable beds, plenty of storage space and room to move freely, with a superbly effective safari bucket shower, the water temperature perfect every time, and a fully flushing W.C. – no roughing it here!
Early morning calls consisted of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies, prior to a sunrise drive along trails, empty of other vehicles yet teeming with the wild game that were in abundance here.
With a rugged open Landcruiser exclusively at our disposal, we were asked what would we like to see by our energetic and supremely knowledgeable guide and we were never disappointed.... on our last day, Mika tracked down the elusive local leopard and his fresh kill of young wildebeest just hundreds of metres from our camp!
Safari breakfasts were a real highlight, feasting on freshly made French toast, bacon sandwiches muesli, yoghurt, fruit, coffee and more; the locations were even more fulfilling from river gorge to open savannah.
After each evening around the campfire, gazing at unfathomable numbers of stars, enjoying excellent food, wine and companionship, we were escorted by our Maasai guards through the inky blackness to the luxury of our accommodating tents, soothed to sleep by the call of the wild. Our Kicheche experience will stay forever in our hearts.

We visited in August, and didn't write a review because we honestly couldn't add anything to the praise already heaped on Kicheche by previous contributors. I have just read the awful review by Mr 'Liketotravel of Detroit' who claims to have also visited in August but strangely didn't get round to penning his invective until November. If you are planning a visit to The Mara, please don't let this character put you off.

The welcome, the staff, the management, the food (and drink!), accommodation, location, and game drives are frankly beyond compare, as is the obvious enthusiasm and dedication of all concerned. If you are looking for a corporate run 'entertainment with animals factory' then look elsewhere. If you are looking for a magical, life enhancing experience, run and staffed by people who's love and respect for the natural environment is humbling, then you will be thrilled by the experience. Please go.

We actually have visited Kicheche (John & Janet 12th August 2010). We have no connection whatsoever with it's management - other than respect. We feel afronted on their behalf by such malicious comments.
