“Cats, cats and more cats”
Reviewed January 11, 2011

A lovely tented camp in a choice location in the Mara. Good food overall, although the lunch fishes tended to have bones dinner was at table which was a nice change from the buffets I experienced even for dinner last time at the Serena in the Mara. The best thing about this trip was our safari guide Dennis, who had amazing knowledge of the local cats. It was literally unbelieveable, and totally blew my last trip to the Mara out of the water. Minus one rather surly restaurant staff member everyone else was very friendly, and Edwin the manager actually remembered us from 2 years ago when we were at the Intrepids in Samburu (!). We were woken up by the wildlife a few times but for me this actually enhanced the trip- we saw an elephant right across the river in the middle of the night courtesy of our in tent flashlights!

We loved this place from the minute we arrived - it was everything you could want from a safari holiday. The food was fantastic and the 'tents' perfect.

We were woken up every morning with tea and biscuits and opted for the breakfast box so we could get a longer game drive in the morning. There were 5 of us in the jeep, which was fine and we found it to be more than comfortable. Our driver (unfortunately can't remember his name) was great. We saw everything we wanted: elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhino, buffalo and spent a couple of hours in a Masai Village, which is a must.

Because it was our honeymoon, we splashed out on the balloon ride, which was a once in a lifetime experience, although we probably wouldn't feel the need to do it again.

In the past four Decembers we have visited Mara Intrepids which has come to feel like “home”. Beyond the general high standards set by Kenyan camps the Interipds is exceptionally well managed with all staff going out of their way to make guests really welcome. Service and cleanliness are exemplary. Special mention is due to the chef whose evening cuisine matched and surpassed that of top Nairobi and Mombasa hotels. The guides are outstanding, communicating infectious enthusiasm for the land, fauna and flora. The game viewing brings us back again and again, especially to follow Olive’s dynasty. Unreservedly recommended!

Great location, along the river being ideal leopard territory. Been with a number of different guides/drivers with other tours/lodges, but guides from intrepids are the best.

This the second camp that we have stayed at in the Masia Mara. With out doubt the best. Staff were fabulous and our Guide Dominic so knowledgeable and helpful. Would gladly recommend Intrepids as one of the best and outstanding Camps in the Masia Mara.

My new husband and I went to stay at Mara Intrepids for 2 nights in Dec, after visiting Nakuru and Amboselli National parks in Kenya. We were lucky enough to see a vast diversity of animals at all camps, however, finishing our honeymoon at Mara Intrepids was the icing on the cake! I don't have anything negative to report on our experience.
Arrival:
We arrived on the 13 seater cesna into Mara, and were greated by a driver from the camp, as it was 5pm, he asked did we want to go on a drive straight away, and of course we said yes to make the most of the time we had there.
Accomodation:
We were in tent 18, highly recommended, private, and right on the river bank. There are about 30 tents, some set back from the river, others like ours right on the water. In the middle of the night we heard a hippo frolicking below the tent in the water, so close, and the sounds of the wilds of africa are wonderful to experience. It is not dangerous whatso ever, the banks are too steep to get up, and there is an electric fence. As it was our honeymoon, they had the tent entrance decorated and also had a complimentary bottle of wine for usin the room. The tents are so luxurious, the beds very comfortable, and the service by Gideon our room attendent wonderful. They pop hot water bottles in the bed before you arrive in the evening, and they turn the bed down, Gideon also brings wake up coffee or tea at your requested wake up time so that you are warmed up to head out on the dawn drive.
The game drives:
We had Dixon as our driver, the most experienced in Intrepids, having worked in the Mara for 22 years. Every time we got into the jeep, he would ask, 'what do you want to see today', and inevitably, he always delivered. He answers all questions with great knowledge. The vehicles used at Mara are the best in the Mara, they are open sides and open roof, and seat 5 guests. We only had to share with one other couple. Looking at other camps vehicles which can range from small mini buses, you will be thankful to be in a Mara Intrepids vehicle. They even provide blankets, as it can get chilly on the dawn and dusk drives. One of our most memorable experiences was encountering 3 lion cubs and their mother, they would have been 3 weeks old, and we were possibly their first human experience. It was very special, and all because I told Dixon I wanted to see some baby lions!! He got us as close as possible, and really just happened upon them, as he was looking for leopards. We also saw a few post kills, and a few cheetahs and lions setting off on their kill at dusk. We saw baby everything you could ask for (bar leopard)
Food and service:
exceptional. The food is out of this world, all meals, breakfast buffet has everything. Lunch starts with soup and an extensive buffet of hot food and salad, and delectible desserts. The dinner is 5 star, amazing choice and quality. The service was wonderful, so many friendly staff, we were always impressed in Mara and all over Kenya, hospitality is a trait all the locals have in abundance.
Other amenities:
there is a lovely pool, which we didn't use. There is a bar right on the river. There is a massage option, but I have to say, although we didn't use, it was very expensive compared to the other camps we stayed at in Kenya.
Note for guests:
make sure you tip you driver, your server in the restaurant, who will get to know you well, and also your bedroom service staff member (who will be the same one all the time). There is a box for tips at reception, but this is for all background staff like security etc, so you can give a tip here, but recommend you tip those who have made your stay very personal. We gave Ksh 1200 for our driver for the 2.5 days, and Ksh 500 to the wait person and the bedroom assistant (who turns down bed, keeps clean, hot water bottle, morning wake up etc). You may be paying alot to stay there, but the experience is made memorable by the staff also, and I believe they deserve that little extra for making it what it is. If you can afford to go on a safari like this, you already have far more than the staff here, as most of them live away from their families for months on site and work 7 days a week, to bring up their families who live elsewhere!
In summary: this camp is one of the best in Mara, and there are a few. My parents and sister have also been to Mara, and Intrepids and sister camp Mara Explorer are excellent. It was the best place to finish our honeymoon, the trip of a lifetime!!

We stayed at the Mara Intrepid for the first time for 3 nights. It couldn't have been better. We had a tent on the river and saw animals during the day and heard them at night, Excellent king size bed, nice furhishings, tea and coffee served in your room every morning. The staff was outgoing and attentive. John, Nelson,George, Humphrey, you were all great. Our game driver guide, Joseph, was the best. Friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. We have used TripAdvisor for where ever we travel and we've never been disappointed. The Mara Intrepid will not disappoint you either.
