Mara Serena Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 11, 2014

Mara Serena is unique. It has an excellent location in the middle of the National Park with great views.
We travelled by road, which is 7 hrs drive from Nairobi. The road through the park is rough.
However, hotel is so relaxing, you will soon forget the road, and wish to stay longer. The food is of great quality. They concentrate mostly on quality rather than quantity, but they still offer variety. No complaints here, especially when you see where the hotel is located.
Rooms are basic, but with great views. Shower is good with lot of hot water and good pressure.
Spa is fantastic. You must try massage in a room overlooking the park. Fabulous. Gym is also great, everything seems to be new. It would be nice to swim while looking at the park.
There is swimming pool, but it is very cold. Suggestion: use solar panels and make the water warmer. Otherwise it is just a decoration.
Another suggestion is to create room for kids, especially around dinner time. They seem to be bored especially that there are no TVs in the room. WIFI is there, but it does not work so well. Again, considering the location, one has to understand.
Game drive is fabulous. We have seen big five in a short time.
We stayed before Christmas and donated money to the kids from nearby village. We were promised to receive an email when kids receive donation, but it did not happen. Kind reminder to Hotel to fulfil their promise.
Overall, this is a very nice place for safari.

Room Tip: I belive all the rooms are good. But if you wish to be close to the reception and swimmin pool, ask...

As other reviewers have said the view is stunning as long as you don't want a water hole close at hand to watch there is one but it's very small and I would guess seldom used by wildlife.
The lodges are very clean the food is good and varied and service as always in Kenya is outstanding.
Now the decor, quirky? African? I just got 70's, helped by the shape and colour of the rooms, sorry but it really got to me.
Still a great place to stay with all the wildlife you could hope for

We stayed here for two nights during a safari in November. The service is impeccable, the views are stunning, and the rooms are well-kept. The food at the lodge is excellent, and the sundowners are a must. The spa offers a range of services and we were happy to get a massage after a long day of game drives.

Will definitely return on our next trip to the Mara

Room Tip: All rooms have excellent views of the Mara. You cannot go wrong with any room. However, remember to...

This is a gorgeous property. When you first walk in, tired from the journey to the Mara, you are greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Mara and a glass of fresh juice. The day of our arrival, we were running late (driving in around 2pm) and we were concerned about missing the lunch hour. We called the hotel and they assured us that we would not be left hungry until dinnertime.

The food here is lovely. There is a sumptuous buffet spread for breakfast and lunch, and a fixed menu for dinner. Before dinner, there is a little campfire area where you can have a bottle of wine and relax, and there's also a pool though we didn't have time to test it. One night, the kitchen staff even baked a cake for a birthday party next to our table.

There are a set of bungalows that run all along one slope of the hotel so each room has an unobstructed view of the Mara. I was so amazed on the first day when a warthog family came right up to my balcony, and even more surprised two nights later when a hippo was sniffing around in the dark!

The wireless here is also quite good so even though you're in the middle of nowhere, you can still Skype with family members at home.

I have no complaints about this Serena - it is heaven.

Mara Serena offers some specatacular views of the park. The property is right inside the reserve and the hotel provides some good ameneties. The breakfast and lunch buffet were good. WE fnd the rooms to be a little bit less spacious and was not equipped with an airconditioner. All the rooms are provided with mosquito nets and the plenty of hot water is available. The hospitality of the staff is also nice. Mara Serena has got its own runway to help travlers to get to and fro to the airfields as quickly as possible.
All in all a nice experience.

My wife and I stayed at the Mara Serena Safari Lodge for two nights in January 2014, paying approximately $240 per night for a standard room, which included all meals and wi-fi access.

The list of positives for this lodge has to start with the stunning views across the Maasai Mara National Reserve, The lobby, the terrace, the pool, the fitness center, and every room have absolutely grand views. If you love great natural views, this is the place to stay. Once you leave the lodge and head down to the Mara for a game drive (which we arranged with an independent tour operator), the wildlife is amazing - we saw lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, gazelles, antelope, impala, and an array of birds. This part of Africa is even more stunning and beautiful than it appears on the National Geographic channel. So obviously, the lodge's location is outstanding. At the lodge, the hotel staff were warm, friendly, and helpful. The standard rooms are not large, but are reasonably-sized, with a sitting area were one can look out over the Mara. The bathroom, like the room overall, was not large, but adequate. The food at the restaurant (buffet-style at breakfast and lunch, with themed dinners served at the table) was quite good, with a large selection and good quality. Finally, the lodge's design and decor are funky and distinctly African, something we enjoyed.

There are two negatives for this property. First, the roads into and out of the Reserve are incredibly rough. A ride to or from Nairobi (the closest major airport) is 6-8 hours, at least 2 of which will be on unpaved, bone-jarring dirt roads in the Reserve. We could have avoided this by flying an extra leg in a small propeller-driven plane from Nairobi directly to the small airstrip at the Lodge. The next time we come, we will almost certainly fly to the Lodge to avoid the roads. Unless you have a strong interest in seeing the cities and the countryside outside of the Reserve, I would suggest the additional flight. Second, the rooms were uncomfortably warm at night. The temperature was at least 5-10F cooler outside than it was inside the room. Opening the screened windows created no draft (opening the doors was not an option at night as animals could wander in). A fan would have been welcome and would have helped us sleep better at night. The hotel website says that standard rooms have a ceiling fan - no one in our group of 4 couples had a ceiling fan in their room.

Overall, this was a stunning, wonderful place to enjoy the wildlife and scenery. We loved the lodge and would recommend it strongly.

Room Tip: Ask if you can get a room with a ceiling fan. Even though no one in our group had one, the hotel we...

We won a voucher for a 3 night stay here and supplemented this yby booking an additional 2 nights and making use of the special offer with flights from Nairobi added to the package. Rooms small, buut clean and with stunning views over the plains. We saw the big 5 up close and personal in 3 days and took a ballon flight. The food in the restaurant was excellent and with a wide variety. I made use of the gym and personal trainer to help burn off some of the extra calories. The only downside was that we had not been advosed in advance of the conservation fees that we needed to pay for the 3 nights that were complimentary. For 2 people this was $420 and as it was completely unexpected - not a pleasant surprise.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view as although the view of the plains is stunning, the river side is just slightly...
