“To be avoided when it rains!”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

We should have stayed here for 2 nights but... when it rains the river that separates the area where the tented camp is located from Masai Mara is swelling and you can say bye bye to your things if you are caught on the wrong side of the river. So we have stayed here only one night. We arrived here after a long 6 hour journey from Nairobi with the last section of the road (after passing Narok) very bumpy and dusty. At the time of our arrival only a swiss couple was staying at the tented camp but they were already in the park enjoying their safari. Lunch is not so great, there is a fixed menu with salad and pasta. We left very quickly for our afternoon safari and after ending our safari the rain started to pour and our minivan could not pass the river. We were forced to come back because there was no way of passing the river. We slept at another camp which is close to Ololaimutia Gate thanks to our safari company (Dawn in Africa Safaris) which solved our night stay. Next morning instead of starting our safari we were heading to Elangata Olerai to take new clothes and the lunch box for our full day safari. Our minivan could not pass the river and we crossed the river by motorcycle (helped by one masai) and we were taken by the manager of Elangata Olerai which was waiting for us on the other side of the river in a 4x4 land rover. We had a really enjoyable safari and we saw lots of lions, elephants, antelopes, baboons, hyenas, crocs, hippos and even a black rhino. It had not rained so we could pass the river and slept for the first time at Elangata Olerai.
Dinner was very good, it is a buffet dinner and the chef was preparing a goat barbecue. Drinks are very cheap so the bill did not break our bank.
Tents are really nice with beds covered by mosquito nets, with hot water but with limited electricity.
We will not come back to Elangata Olerai if they are not building a bridge and the government a proper road to get here.

In the 9 weeks I have travelled through Africa, my definite highlight was my Safari to th the Masai Mara. This lodge was in a great location, and I am not one for roughing it up so the luxury tents were just my style. I liked having a bathrooms in the tent, with all the facilities. The only downside is tnat you only get generated power for 1 hour in the morning, and 4 hours at night. After 10.30pm you are in total darkness so make sure you have a torch. My room had some power issues, so they moved me without me asking for this, wh7ch was good of them. The food was good, not a buffet, the chef let's you know what he has prepared for you, I was always happy with what was on offer, I guess if you didn't like it you would need to pre order. I spent 2 nights here which is enough time. With the breakfast the first morning the Corn Flakes were stale, I guess not many people choose to eat them so they were old, they were not on offer the next morning, the omlette was good instead.
Maureen the manager and all her staff were fabulous, they were very friendly and helpful. There had been a lot of rain prior to my arrival, so some of the roads were a bit scary, I had some issues with my driver, but he was in no way connected to the lodge, how ever I spoke to Maureen about him, and she handled the issues with the driver on my behalf.
Overall a great place to see the Masai Mara.

We stayed here two nights. We were the only guests and were well-looked after, even having four security guards at night. The guards were very obvious and we were not worried about security at all. Food was simple but fresh. We were on safari and did not expect a five star buffet!
Our room had solar power only and this is something that I think the lodge should use more in their advertising - selling the stay as eco-friendly. The power lasted all through the night as the security made sure our outside light stayed on.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. We had to borrow their 4WD as we got stuck in the mud in the reserve in our mini-van and the driver was brilliant, leading us to see a leopard in a tree(!!!) and a cheetah and her cub.
Good quality tents and there is a dressing area so that you can keep the sides up and not worry about being seen from the outside. Bathroom area was spacious.
We could hear hyenas in the night and loved the sound of the Masai cattle moving out and back in the morning and evening.
The road to it is a bit interesting! How drivers find it, I'm not sure. The second part is better than the first half and there is a stream to cross. When wet, it can be a little slippery but the rain drains easily.
All in all a thoroughly satisfying stay, as if you were in the middle of nowhere.

Room Tip: Anywhere will give you a great view across to the Masai Mara

We stayed here 3 nights. It's outside of the Masai Mara and not a good road to drive. It could be a shortcut but even this road was a long drive to go the places where you need to be to see a lot of wild animals.Ok, here at the camp are also possibilities to see wild animals but is was not the place where we wanted to be. It's not the staff, they tried to make your stay as nice as possible but everything here was poor and very simple. When you booked an expensive safari trip and stayed already in very nice tents you are looking at this with unbelief.
So when you like to stay in a simple place this is the one , the food is not bad at all.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a mosquito-net.

This is a rather simple tented camp.
The tents are clean, the shower hot... What more do you need?
The restaurant is also located in a tent.
When we were here we were the only guests in the camp.
The chef still offered us several options for lunch and dinner and the food was very, very nice.
Maybe not so good when you're with children since there is no swimming pool or other entertainment.

Newly opened (2013). Very friendly staff, all of whom were very willing to please. Good food and the chef made great efforts – and fantastic soups! Beautifully situated for touring the Masai Mara. Good quality spacious tents.

Having been sold this as a luxury tented camp and looked on the website to confirm we arrived to find it was anything but. We had to be moved as we had no shower in one tent and when we were moved to the newer tents we still had a broken shower which they could not fix. There were no mosquito nets in the first tents and in the newer ones they did not fit the beds. The staff seemed amazed that we were unhappy and left us with water flooding into our tent because they could not fix the shower. The sinks were not attached to anything and had no plugs. The toiletries consisted of a small bar of travel soap. There was no where to hang or put clothes so they had to stay in your bag and most people had wet towels hanging outside their tents. The bar was also badly stocked and basically only served beer.
Our travel agent has been trying to get some sort of answer from the camp since we arrived back a month ago and they are still not offering anything and do not seem to grasp the meaning of customer services.
