“Lovely camp”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

I stayed at Encounter Mara for four nights at the end of a trip to Ethiopia and before my flight home. The travel agency True Africa made all the arrangements for the Kenya portion of my trip, including the booking of Encounter Mara. All transfers and lodging arrangements went flawlessly. The camp itself is beautiful and comfortable. Tents are quite separate from each other and so privacy is completely insured. Because the camp is relatively new, the tents were in like-new condition and the attention to detail was evident all through the camp. The food was exceptional and presented beautifully. Staff was obviously well-trained and eager to please. My driver/guide Dixon was remarkable in his ability to locate wildlife, of which there was an abundance to see. He also understood a photographers need to get in a position with the best light and always tried to orient the truck for the best shot. Because this was in the low season, the camp was only one quarter full which made it even quieter and more serene. I loved this camp and would love to return one day.

No wonder Encounter Mara was voted best Bush Camp in Kenya this year!
Our four days were an absolute delight.
It is a small, intimate and caring camp with excellent service. Knowledgeable guides knew every bird, flower, tree, traditional usage and magnificent creatures from mouse to elephant. We saw over 90 species of birds during our stay plus lion and cheetah kills.
With our Masaai guides we were warmly welcomed to an adjoining village and were able to envisage life as a traditional Massai living in a modern world.
When we showed an interest in the sustainability aspects of the camp we were invited to view the support team and how they operate a charcoal 'fridge', solar energy, their own veggie patch and hot water boiler.
To care for our safety at night there were always guides in the shadows to guide us through the open camp, wake us for our early morning game drive or walk with a delicious snack awaiting.
We would return late morning for a huge and delicious brunch under the trees and the nest of a Paradise Whydah.
The afternoon was spent drawing, photographing, reading books or magazines in the 'lounge' tent and bird spotting round the camp.
Sundowners were enjoyed in a variety of places midway through our evening game drive and we returned to hot showers rigged up bush style before chat and drinks around the crackling fire and a beautifully presented meal under the southern stars.
Perfection!

Room Tip: All rooms had an excellent situation and outlook and you could not see other tents from your own ten...

If in the area - this is a wonderful tented camp with wonderful service, safety precautions, delicious food, and very serene. I was on my weekend off from a volunteering program 10 mins. away and was totally appreciative of everything this property had to offer. Africa is hard and rural if you want to see the non-touristy wildlife. This is the place. The game drives were in the Naboisho Conservancy. Many sitings, many birds.

Four of us (2 couples) stayed at Encounter Mara for 2 nights. We had a great experience and we're already planning a return visit. The staff was wonderful - accommodating, attentive, friendly and very knowledgeable. The camp itself was very nicely done and super clean. Everything was very well thought-out. The warm showers right before dinner were a great surprise. The food was great too.

Dixon was our guide. He was an amazing spotter and so willing give us the game drives we hoped for. He amazed us with his ability to find the big cats way off in the distance. We saw a wide variety of animals - 4 of the Big 5, plus so many others.

The four of us had been to Kruger before - numerous times. This was our best safari experience - the Mara is vast and overwhelmingly beautiful. The sheer number of grazing animals was astounding. The Encounter Mara staff sure added to the experience.

I highly recommend it!

We stayed at Encounter Mara for three nights and enjoyed every minute of our time there. It was amazing and exceeded all expectations. The staff was wonderful and our guide Dixon was incredible. The wildlife was amazing! We saw everything we wanted to see. Everyone went out of their way to make sure that we were happy. The food was excellent and abundant. The tents were clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. I hope to return with family next year. I highly recommend Encounter Mara!

What an amazing experience we had at Encounter Mara. Having been to the Mara before and staying at a 5* lodge I could compare, and if anyone is looking for a truly African bush experience with luxuries then this is the place to go!! Our guide Dixon was wonderful, his friendliness, knowledge and passion was very welcoming. The lodge managers Nina and Esch really know how to make you feel welcome and at home and nothing is too much trouble. Booking through African Encounter via African Synergy was hassle free and a complete pleasure. A truly memorable long weekend which I would highly recommend.

A group of 16 of us including our grandson of 5 months visited Kenya from 28th Aug to 3 Sept'12, to see the migration, a "once in a lifetime" trip. We booked through African Encounter & stayed at their camp "Encounter Mara". The whole experience was awesome. The wildlife was unbelievable. The ("eco") camp was very comfortable, the food was very good and the camp management excellent. The guides very friendly/exceptionally capable (we were allocated Nelson, Dickson & Moses as our guides for the 4 nights in camp), they were well versed in all the fauna & flora, particularly the birds and animals. We all had an extremely enjoyable and memorable trip to the Masai Mara, thanks to African Encounter & all its people who were involved in making this dream come true!!
