Having been on a few Safari tours in Kenya, I would recommend this one for people who are wanting to forgo the luxuries and perks of the 5-star resort and immerse themselves in a friendly environment. The group of Maasai who run this camp want to introduce visitors to their world -- to their natural environment (through game tours, hikes, etc.) and their villages and schools. Some things might not be quite as polished as a fancy Safari operator (the food, for example, was not memorable). But what they lack in luxury, they make up for in knowledge and energy. 4/5s of any Safari experience is dependent on the individual guide. And Nelson -- who will in most cases be the guide -- is a patient, versatile and very resourceful man. He is comfortable in cross-cultural environments and at the same time able to offer an authentic glimpse into the life and nature of the mara. As for viewing and knowing about animals and their habitats, most people who grow up in these villages (like Nelson) are well acquainted with the wildlife and their movements and migrations. They don't need specialized training, school or technology to locate lions, cheetahs and elephants. They've been doing it their whole life. So being with a Maasai operator can put you in good hands.

I just returned from 3 nights at Oldarpoi Mara Camp. It was relaxing and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful; and they took great care with setting up each meal to make sure we had everything we needed. I found the mattress and pillow in my tent to be very comfortable, and there was plenty of hot water. I especially liked the beer before dinner around the campfire. The camp is located about 5 minutes away from the gate of the Masai national reserve so it is a great location. If you like camping, you can't go wrong here.

We spent 3 nights in Oldarpoi on last August. It has been a great experience! The tents are big, clean and safe, the safari was simply perfect! We saw all the big 5 and also a lion killing a zebra...we were really lucky but we also had great guides Tempati (I hope I wrote the name in the right way) and Jackson. Apart from this, we really appreciated the whole experience and the fact that Oldarpoi gives part of the money helping the local masai community, building school and helping children education. For me this makes the difference between an "experience" and a holiday. Thanks Nelson for everything!

I spent 7 days at Oldarpoi Mara camp. It was a life changing experience. I cannot speak highly enough about this place! I must admit i was a little lucky in seeing just about everything. However it must be said that Nelson is the best guide in the game. He somehow instinctively knew where to be and at the right time. We saw Leopard kills, Wild dogs on a kill, Cheetah brothers feasting on a kill and plenty of lion hunts and dramatic encounters. It was all i ever imaged and more. I thought 6 days on safari would be too much, however Nelson made sure that each day we found a new experience and with his tracker Jackson there was never a dull moment.
The camp is excellent and inexpensive for what you get. The accommodation is comfortable and the tents are heavy duty and warm. Willie the chef is excellent. All the staff are very friendly and attentive. Masai warriors are constantly guarding the campsite in case of any wild visitors. The Hyenas can be heard almost every night close to the camp. The location is also great as the drive is only 5 minutes to the main entry gate. i went on a walking safari each day and was introduced to many Masai villages and got a taste of what it is like to be a Masai warrior! If you are looking for a real experience. Look no further than oldarpoi. i will definitely be back for another dose in a few years time :)

Room Tip: I stayed in the Hyena room
