“The Perfect Safari Camp Experience”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

I visited Karen Blixen Camp (KBC) in June 2012 as part of an 11-day photo safari trip in Kenya & Tanzania. We visited 5 different park areas, with the Masai Mara/ Mara North Conservancy as our final park. Our 3 night stay here at KBC was the perfect "crown jewel" in our safari experience. We were greeted by Martin, the camp's wonderful Danish co-owner (opened in 2007) and equally friendly & gracious asst. manager, Sharon. The camp evokes peace and casual elegance with its beautiful setting on the Mara River, complete with a resident pod of hippos, and lovely public areas (dining room, lounge and bar). My large "tented camp" room was heavenly - with a spacious wooden deck with river views, nice furniture, a large bathroom and "open air" shower. The whole camp evoked a feeling of "Out of Africa" which was clearly their intent and I loved their "true" eco-responsible focus (both in how they built the camp, such as using only solar power and how they work with and employ the local Masai villagers). The food was gourmet and all of the camp staff were great. KBC's safari jeeps (6 passenger) and driver guides were excellent. Our group enjoyed a sunrise balloon ride over the Masai Mara (wonderful, including the post-ride champagne breakfast) and some people made a visit to a local Masai village to experience the Masai's very different and fascinating culture. Our short time at Karen Blixen passed much too quickly but my vivid memories of this lovely place will always remain.

Please re-read the title of this review, as this is not a 5-star hotel, but a 5-star experience. This is a critical distinction that must be understood. At Karen Blixen, one is housed in tent cabins that are the size of small house, well-furnished and decorated, with an outside shower area the size of a typical American bedroom. Even with all the physical comforts, its the service that creates the 5-star experience, from the cabin steward who takes care of your cabin from morning to evening turndown, to the dining room staff who are gracious and solicitous, to the reception staff who provide suggestions to make your stay a true adventure, to the fully trained guides who are fully knowledgable concerning the Maasai Mara wildlife - all of these people are what makes Karen Blixen an "Exquisite Experience." Others have written of the animals around the Camp grounds, but a must-do is the Game Walk offered for only $30. This walk consists of being driven to a an area of the Mara where a guest can walk the Land among whatever animals are nearby, but not the Big 5 which could be dangerous. I was accompanied by a guide, a guard, plus a driver who waits in the distance just in I became tired. I walked near groups of giraffes, antelope, wart hog, hyena, zebra. And, when a report of a cheetah kill was received by the driver, he picked us all up and took us to the kill, and then through a herd of elephant and pride of lion. The guide educated me about animal tracks and scat during the walk and was fully versed in both scientific and anecdotal information about both the animal and plant life of the Mara. I stayed an KBC through a tour, so I don't know how much it cost, but it certainly was an experience of a lifetime.

A wonderful place; the tents are spread out by the Mara River.
Sitting having breakfast by the hippo-pool when we suddenly see a large hippo right across the river.
In fact; we did see a lot og animals from the dining area, and from the large terrace in front of our tent.
Good food, excellent service, large and clean tents and focus on responsible tourism. We really liked it here:-)

If you are planning a trip to the Mara, stay at Karen Blixen Camp. We have been to many camps in the Mara and this one outshone them all. Its location is idyllic, in the Mara North Conservancy on a bend in the river where you can sit and watch hippo, impala, crocodiles, giraffe, elephant and wart hog (and, if you're lucky elephant and other "Big Five"). Tents are comfortable and spacious, the food is stunning, the staff are friendly and you are sure of a wonderful stay. Game drives are conducted by experienced and hugely knowledgeable guides who will match the drive to suit your wishes. If you don't see big cats and other "must see" animals (but you probably will), you'll see everything else and learn a huge amount in the process. If you're a birder, take advantage of Nicholas and Julius whose knowledge is second to none. If you just want to see the Mara and then relax in your tent or by the pool - go to Karen Blixen Camp. Wonderful!

Room Tip: All tented rooms are great - don't worry!

Karen Blixen camp is eco camp placed in the stunning masai mara. If you are wondering where and how to do a first class safari and also show green and social responsibility, Karen Blixen Camp is absolute worth a consideration.

We where in the camp for five days and enjoyed the luxery of wonderfull food, great service and a very well educated staff. The kitchen is supervised by a european chef who also runs an educational program for upcoming chefs in the backyard of the camp.

From our luxery tents we had direct view to app. 20 hippos 24/7. During the days we also saw elefants, girafs, monkeys and a crokodile on the other site of the river. The camp itself is protected by a high descarpment and local guards ensuring that no dangerous animals get inside the camp.

On the game drive we were in safe hands of well educated guides who had a high knowledge of the souroundings and who showed an endorable respect to the natur. With their help we managed to see the big five - andmany many more.

Finally it should be said that the camp is running on solar panals, garbage is sorted and the water is naturally cleaned before led into the river. This should be of great interest to all who wants to play the role as a responsible tourist.

I booked this camp through Real Africa, their service (Paul Hickey-Fry) was faultless. Travel arrangements worked without a hitch. We were welcomed by our driver Jacob and spotter Charles. I would ask for them by name if you go because they seem to be able to find all of the game and get you into a good position for photos. Mark (camp manager) welcomed us to the camp and showed us round he is a really nice man and made sure that everything went smoothly. The camp is beautiful and the food is excellent especially as my wife who is vegetarian was catered for at every meal. The camp is on the Mara River and the Hippo pool is opposite the restaurant. This makes the came very special as you can watch game all day without moving from your table if you wish. We did a balloon safari which was superb I will never forget it.
The small pool at the camp was a haven after a the heat of a game drive.
I would go to this camp again without hesitation.

Room Tip: If you like the sound of the river ask for room 4 which is next to the falls. I loved it
