“Nice place, bad people”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2011

We reached the Jannat house in August 2011; their personnel came to pick up us at the airport and they brought us at the hotel, carrying our luggage.

The premise is very nice, there are two buildings joined together, with nice plants, a swimming pool and many floors with different relax areas.

In the beginning they assigned us a room at the first floor but as we previously asked to our travel agency to reserve a room in the upper floors (first floor rooms have a shared bathroom while upper floor rooms have private bathroom) and they confirmed they did it, we had to ask to be moved to a better room even if the manager seemed to be not so happy about that.

As soon as we got our room, they showed us the excursion list paper; prices were incredible high and when we said that we were going to the harbor to find a better deal, we were told that their rates where very low. We discussed for at least one our for a boat excursion to Manda Island (beach in front of Shela and Takwa ruins) and we finally agreed 7000ksh for 2 people for the excursion and the lunch. While going to the harbor we discovered that due to fasting of the boat crew (ramadan period) they where not intended to cook any fish on the boat but we were supposed to have a small meal consisting in some fruit and something bought at the shop; this is not what we agreed before so we decided to eat some fruit on the boat and have a free dinner at the Jannat house. We where also told that the trip to Manda was about 90 minutes, but we finally reach the place in around 40 minutes and then we started to feel cheated, because the boat trip was so short and the price too high.

Then we came back to Jannat house and we took a shower (discovering that beside the high price of the room THERE IS NO HOT WATER and finding a dead big beetle in the bathroom).

We had a very good dinner later and after that they also charged us for the starter and the water!!! So basically in the end we paid 8200ksh for the short excursion and the dinner! As there where very few customers in the hotel maybe they tried to ask us as much money as possible.

In the following days the managers where continuously asking us about having lunch and dinner in Jannat house or having some more excursion, but we always preferred to give money to another people. The following day we went to the harbor and we found the same excursion at less than half price!!! (3000ksh).

The breakfast has always been good but you have to deal with hundreds of flies on your dishes.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful in this swahili styple hotel in the backstreets of Lamu town. We were met at the airport by the assistant manager who escorted us to the hotel. The room was very pretty and very clean, with a big bed and en-suite facilities. Breakfast was good and included fresh fruit. Other meals could also be taken there.

On the downside, it was the wet season so there were a lot of mosquitoes, so it was a battle with them in teh room. Also, there is only cold water in teh shower, so it was slightly chilly. It's probably fine in teh dry season.

In summary, it is a very nice mid-range hotel, with lovely staff, although I think a little over-proced. Try and drive a hard bargain if you decide to stay there!

Very lovely place, not quite the jewel of Lamu that it clearly once was as the owner belives it still to be. Just a little tired in the details (bathroom taps, rattling fans, lamest breakfast ever) but still incredibly friendly, clean and overall charming. Lamu itself is just fantastic.

I would highly recommend this marvelous Lamu hotel to anyone especially families. We stayed there over Christmas and New Year 2010-2011 and it was 5* all round. Both my children of 5 and 15 years, delighted in the crystal clear pool every morning , noon and night - it was very easy to supervise them at all times. The staff were friendly and always willing to help with any advise or directions. Johnny and Elizabeth are the perfect hosts and went out of their way to assist us with every detail; they made us feel like family which was the experienced we yearned for coming from Nairobi. The room rates we were given were by far the best deal we got over the festive season and were not disappointed in anyway . The hotel location was also perfect; not too far for little ones to walk.
The renovation works to this old Swahili house were obviously carried out with great detailing to incorporate breezy and private rooftop verandas, large comfortable dining areas with much needed cross ventilation, authentic decor and soft furnishings and a nucleus bar/ pool area. The bedrooms were always sparkling clean and decorated in the East African coastal style and further perfectly sized with wooden shutters to keep the rooms cool in harmony with the traditional Lamu style and design.
As a family we have decided that this will be our destination again this festive season without a doubt and are looking forward to our return. Keep up the good work.

I didnt really like my experience in this B&B. I didnt get picked up at the airport as agreed upon (even though they were reminded 1 day before by my travel agent) and the initial reaction when I called them from the airport was not very pleasant. They requested that I pay for my own boat trip back even though airport transport was to be provided. Yes they apologised and upgraded me to a better room, but I dont know how I felt about that as well as the upgraded room was very dark and wasnt very pleasing. I wasnt even sure it was worth the original price I paid!!

The fans were filled with dust and the door locks were at the very far top of the doors so I had to grab a chair to lock the door in place. I also saw some worms on the terrace cushions. There were also flies everywhere (but I dont think that is specficailly the hotel's fault,, its just the town's environment. It just makes it very difficult to eat. The rooms itself were really dark..too dark. My dirty dishes that I left out at the terrace during lunch time wasnt cleared until the next morning...

Lunch was fine and reasonable...no complaints and no raving reviews. The price was quite expensive...KSH 900 for rice and calamari? hmm.

It didnt really have the 'environment' that I had hoped for and i also think I was charged way too expensive for a dhow trip that took about 2.5 hrs. (they told me it took 3-4 hrs) during low season.

Very low value for money and I would not recommend.

We are sorry that our apology to the guest was not accepted. We was expecting her with another airplane. She booked and paid by the agent for a low budget room with shared bathroom, but we gave her a room with private bathroom which cost the double of what she paid for. She had the choice between rooms with 1 and 2 windows. She choose with 1. She had her lunch by the pool side, it was a choice from the menue/pricelist. The plates where removed after lunch, the plates found at the terrace next morning where from late night guests and far from where she had her lunch. We offered free transport to the airport in connection with the excursion same day as leaving, but she said she will take care of it herself.

We stayed at Jannat for 6 nights at the beginning of August. The hotel is a very nice swaili house well renovated and with a lot of terraces with sofas where you can relax. The gardens are also very nice, there is a cool atmosphere and the personnel is friendly and helpful. However the place is surely not a boutique hotel as it is advertised. We were given the best room, but even there there was no hot water. Our room was very large and very nicely decorated, but some of the other rooms we saw were very small and with very poor bathroom facilities. The pool looks nice in the pictures but it is tiny, there is no room to lay down around the pool and it is not cleaned very often (in fact the water looks always not clear). Breakfast was basic. The hotel is also quite far from the main street and to reach it you need to cross quite a lot of back streets full of donkey's escrement and open-air sewage. We discovered that the price was 30-40% higher than equivalent places in Lamu. If you want to stay in Lamu, book a place for the first night and then look around, there are equivalent or better places for much less money.

Very nice place to stay. Close to town, where we could let the kids go alone because of the safe and traffic-free environment. A small, clean pool where our youngest proudly learned to swim. We liked the special features of the old building, with stairs and small terraces "everywhere" where you can find a place for yourself to relax.
I am glad we stayed in town and not in the beach resorts on Shela - where I think we could get bored quite soon. It's easy to find a boat for a trip to the beaches - but to be honest we also enjoyed just relaxing by the pool at Jannat's. Had a fine boat trip with Jannat's own boat, with an exciting walk in the woods on an other part of Lamu island.
