“CLASSIC OLD COLONIAL NAIROBI HOTEL IN THE SUBURBS”
Reviewed July 10, 2011

Located on the infamous Karen Blixen estate in the beautiful suburb of Karen, Nairobi.

I stayed, and only recommend, the "Honeymoon Suite" which has a modern huge bathroom and a separate living room. I have been here several times and I would recommend this room. Although Hogmead has just opened and I recommend this hands down. Also in the suburbs of Nairobi.

Karen Blixen is always a great spot for lunch and people watching. The food is good and you are apt to run into someone from the states or Europe. Dining out in their beautiful well kept gardens is a plus, it is beautiful and they take great care of their grounds.

The manager is very nice and wil be sure to make your stay enjoyable.

Room Tip: Honeymoon Suite

This is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in, and I travel all the time in my job. And I'm talking global here!! The garden is a tropical heaven, beautifully maintained, the cottages are beautiful, clean, tastefully decorated and utterly romantic. Try the massage in the spa, it's great! But best of all: the historic heartbeat of the whole place. Karen and Bror Blixen lived here when they first came to Kenya. You're actually living in the setting from "Out of Africa" - one of the great novels of our time.

We stayed at the Karen Blixen cottages at the beginning and end of our African safari trip in Kenya and can't write enough accolades for this distinctive boutique hotel. After a 24 hr trip from the United States, the arrival at the Blixen Cottages was the sweetest thing one could hope for. Located in Karen, a short drive from the airport, this idyllic garden environment with the historic Swedo house once inhabited by Karen Blixen (of "Out of Africa" fame) is the perfect place to unwind, overcome jetlag and, at the end of our trip, regroup after a long safari. There are a total of 12 separate cottages, each built in the style of the original Swedo plantation house. They are rustic and elegant at the same time. All the modern amenities including a luxurious bathroom with separate dressing area. The bedroom has a sitting area, fireplace and beds with mosquito netting that is put down in the evening by the staff. The cottages are situated in a lovely garden setting with a fish pond in the middle. Down the lane is a pool with sunbathing area, restaurant/bar and an elegant building with exercise equipment and spa and spa facilities. Next door to the main Swedo house is a bar and restaurant which has an outdoor seating area in a garden setting. Food is excellent, especially the pizzas for a quick bite. At the end of our travels, we reserved a day-suite in one of the cottages during our 8 hour layover between flights. A fabulous way to relax and end our safari trip to Kenya and Tanzania. The staff is friendly, efficient and helpful, arranging our airport transfers from and back to the airports in time for our flights. I recommend this place with the highest level of enthusiasm to all travelers visiting Nairobi for a long or short visit. It will be a trip highlight.

The cabins are comfortable and spacious and the grounds are outstanding in the landscaping and historical buildings. The food and service were excellent, as were the array of curios at a fair price.

I stayed at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden for several days in March, 2011. I was there for a meeting with colleagues, but we also had significant leisure time. I loved everything about this place! The entire ambience was wonderful - classy yet relaxed. The rooms were great, the restaurants and food were great, and the bar was great. The grounds are beautiful. The staff were extremely accommodating and always looking to help the guests. I found no faults whatsoever and will most certainly return. I recommend this place without any hesitation - whether you are looking for a place to meet with colleagues as I did, or just a perfect place to relax and enjoy yourself while in Nairobi. Also, the owner is an expert on safaris in Africa as well as many other local attractions and issues.

This was an oasis within Nairobi from a very busy city, that is one of the most historic hotels and sites in the county. The rooms are outstanding, clean and service wonderful. The pool is nice on hot days and several bars very useful for social gatherings. The gift shop was one of the best selections I found at more reasonable prices than others. I found no problems nor issues, but instead found very relaxing and peaceful. I give it my highest recommendation and will stay there in the future, as is best place in Nairobi to stay. An Out of Africa experience.

Apart from just the ambience and calm setting of Karen Blixen in the afternoon during non-high season tourist stops, the Salmon Pizza is really very good. Eat in or Take Away which is available, this Pizza ranks quite high up. Karen Blixen is also a favourite stop for locals who live in the area and is a meeting point for many after work. It provides just the right mood after suffering traffic congestion that bedevils commute to Karengata either on Langata or Ngong Roads.
As a "local" it is up their with Que Pasa (Karen Shopping Cent.).
