“Nice place but rooms need ventilation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2010

Had booked the Palacina for a week at recommendation of colleagues but stayed only two nights as i found the room unbearably stuffy. In most respects I agree with the other reviewers - the hotel is lovely, good restaurant, spacious suites, etc. But even if you want to sleep with the windows open (and Nairobi does cool off nicely at night), there is no cross ventilation in the room, and I found it far to stuffy to sleep. There is no fan, nor any air conditioning or other temperature control. Management did on request bring me a large portable air conditioner/fan unit, but while it gave me much needed circulation it sounded like a Boeing 747 taking off. It's really a shame as this is otherwise a very nice hotel, and the problem could easily be solved by installing ceiling fans in the rooms.
Other downside, if you have business in central Nairobi, is that the location is a bit far out and traffic can be quite bad, especially at rush hour. But if neither of these issues phases you, the Palacina is otherwise to be recommended (and is a lot cheaper than the "business class" hotels in downtown.)

We were 'stranded' here for a week when the Icelandic volcano erupted. We could not have ended up somewhere more comfortable and luxurious. All the facilites you'd expect plus an excellent resturant on-site, free tea & cakes at 4 and free DVDs to watch. What most impressed us though was how helpful the staff were! They did everything they could to make our stay comfortable. Only negative I can think of was that the pool was cold and a little small.

Palacina is a really great boutique hotel. Forced to stay in Nairobi as a result of travel disruptions- but the Palacina made it so much more bearable. Staff did their utmost to find us a room and were really friendly, helping us with all our enquiries.

It is the little touches that make this hotel so special- the service of course, but also the great breakfast, the free high tea every day, and the attention they pay to each of the guests. The restaurant is also good. Would definitely stay here again- for work or for holidays with my better half.

We stayed at the Palacina for one night after a safari in Tanzania and a beach holiday in Zanzibar, the rooms are perfect, large sitting area beautiful bedroom and bathroom, the restaurant is magnificent and the staff are very helpful. Great place for an overnight stay just wish I could have stayed longer. Have to also thank our tour operator Tanzania Odessey as they really know thier job and picked perfect hotels throughout the trip.

very polite and accommodating staff, they are accustomed to dealing with embassy staff and so they are great to work with when you arrive after a long flight and need to check in early or late, have a nap/shower/coffee even if it's not precisely on the clock you imagined...very comfortable, private and quiet rooms, will arrange driver should you need one.

Spent one night at the Palacina. The rooms are of a very good size, enormous bathroom, nice sitting room including DVD player and minibar. Surprised that the rooms were no air conditioned/heated but that was certainly not an issue when we stayed. Very handy location with a lovely outlook, lovely gardens and certainly well maintained. Reception Staff were generally very helpful and professional. Breakfast had a limited selection but was acceptable.

Don't have anything in Nairobi to compare to it but I did hear that the House of Waine was worth a try as well (if not most peoples first choice).

All in all, a very pleasant and acceptable stay in a nice boutique property. We had one of the best Indian meals ever at the Haandi Indian as recommended by the reception staff. Nairobi itself was certainly worth more than the short time we spent in it and I look forward to returning.

The design of the hotel is very sleek, typical browns and muted beige. I stayed in an executive suite with bedroom, lounge and bathroom so obviously not a cheap option! View from hotel a building site!!!

The hotel staff quite frankly were appalling in particular Martin on the front desk in the morning. We had requested an early morning call as we had to fly out. Martin called us 1 hour late, if we hadn't checked our own watches we wouldn't have realised, when we rang down to point out he could have told us it was late he said: "My phone hasn't been working", clearly neither were his legs because he could have come and knocked on our door we were only up one flight of stairs. We missed breakfast and were in a real hurry to get to the airport.

We had eaten in the restaurant the night before and they charged us too much for wine stating we had something completely different!!! I was also accused of pinching a Tusker from the min bar, how ridiculous!!! Inept, rude and bland I will go back to Move and Pick next time.
